Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

Get a life. Normal flight time

Meanwhile the crew will have also have to wake up at some horrible time, have a 0500 clock on at the offices at the airport (at the latest), work on the flight, almost certainly turn in Gran Canaria to work on the return sector and by mid afternoon will be back in the UK whilst the OP is heading for the beach or pool...

I'm struggling to have a great deal of sympathy TBH.

I get your point but that’s their choice!

First world problems haha. Just go to bed extra early and have a nap on the plane?

But we live in the first world.
So we can have our problems too. No need to be sarcastic.

MarieChantal1 · 25/02/2024 17:59

I love an early flight but if you don’t, so what? It’s once in a blue moon. Op needs to count their blessings and get on with enjoying a lovely holiday. In other words: Get a fucking grip.

No it's not my first time abroad we go abroad twice a year but I always have the fear of missing my flight.
We are flying from Newcastle and staying in the doubletree opposite
Last year tho our flight home was at 4.30 and we didn't get picked up by TUI till 2pm for a 30 min transfer and still made it but it was rush rush rush
I like to look around duty free then go to boots for a meal deal on the plane etc

You don’t need to wear make up on the plane.
You don’t need to go to the duty free. Do it on the way home.
You don’t need to go somewhere for breakfast - this could be prepared the night before, brought with you and eaten at the airport whilst queuing to check in.
You don’t need to look around duty free. Do it on the way home.

Obviously it’s fine to do all of those things, but they’re not essential, if you don’t want to be tired forgo those things so you can have an extra hour or so sleep.

It’s hardly a problem 🤣

YABVU. My last 3 holidays (with DH and DD) have been 6-6:30am flights, we don’t stay at an airport hotel as 20 mins away in a taxi and it’s perfectly fine. And I’ve never got up before 3.

AndThatWasNY · 25/02/2024 18:01

If you really can't bear being without make up for a short flight why not do it after you have checked in (and are waiting for 3 hours!)

puzzledout · 25/02/2024 18:03

@penjil but what is the problem?

trekking1 · 25/02/2024 18:04

I was today years old when I realised some people actually take the "show up at the airport 3 hours early" seriously.

Remember to put it in the transparent bag.

Caravaggiouch · 25/02/2024 18:04

Just seen it’s Newcastle - in that case you’re being even more unreasonable. At that time of the morning you’ll absolutely sail through security and there aren’t many places to just sit and most places won’t be open yet so you’re just going to leave yourself hanging around unnecessarily.

VickyEadieofThigh · 25/02/2024 18:05

MissHyacinthSpring · 25/02/2024 15:19

Out of interest how old are you? I only ask because I’m early 60s and would never book a flight that early but a couple of decades ago I would have

I'm 65 and we often book flights at this time. We just don't go to bed - drive to the airport (usually Manchester or Leeds), arrive at about 3am, leave car in multi-story car park. Sail through bag drop and especially security (which is VERY easy at 4am - gets mobbed from about 7am), have coffee and a nice thing airside, get the Boots meal deal (!) with plenty of time. Nod off on flight and get to the accommodation in resort at a really sensible time - we might have a nap for a couple of hours, then shower and out for an early dinner.

Another advantage of the early flight out is the early afternoon flight home - I hate flights late at night, which get you home at stupid o'clock.

MarceyMc · 25/02/2024 18:06

I don't think you are BU as I couldn't think of anything worse than a 6am flight - I am lucky tho as OH is exactly the same as me - neither of us are morning people 😂 we tend to go for 10/11am when we can

itsgettingweird · 25/02/2024 18:07

Yabu.

Mainly because I prefer early morning flights. Get there and get checked I. Straight away and enjoy a lazy day.

But also because your DH booked this for valentines. What a lovely present.

I also prefer the morning flight h9me afterwards. Get up, breakfast, leave hotel. I hate this hanging around and needing to pack wet clothes in suitcases and book showers in courtesy rooms.

Vive42 · 25/02/2024 18:08

Have a short nap when you get there. Problem solved!

Not you going on holiday at all? Is that not worse?

Fishbones1 · 25/02/2024 18:09

No you’re definitely not being unreasonable. I am a certified flight snob, and have been known to change the location of my holiday because the flights were at horrid times; anytime between 10pm - 9am is totally offensive and unacceptable!!!

I have two small children though and I like to sticks to daytime adventures as much as possible. I seem to remember pre-kids I wouldn’t have cared a jot!

You can’t think of anything worse than a 6am flight? Wow. Just wow.

I mean, the four horsemen of the apocalypse are still out there…

babyproblems · 25/02/2024 18:10

I also hate travel at awkward times op! Try and enjoy it anyway x

Vive42 · 25/02/2024 18:11

Also find out what time check-in actually starts. At Heathrow you can't check in until it opens at 4:00am so no point being there at 3am I'd expect.

unnumber · 25/02/2024 18:14

Newcastle Airport is tiny.

I'd be showering night before; stash breakfast in hotel fridge if bothered; get up about four; teeth, clothes, hair; buy drink and do makeup after security or on plane.

If you are really worried by luggage issues, post it ahead. But you'll be fine.
