Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

One early morning! Are you elderly or infirm?

I am about to do a 10 hour flight and will have to be up by 4 at the latest. It’s all part of the fun and one early morning should not affect you.

SwedishEdith · 25/02/2024 17:23

Urgh, I hate early flights/getting up early for anything as feel knackered for the rest of the day. However, if someone had done all the tedious stuff of sorting out a holiday for me, I'd get up at any time.

I like getting a later flight and having a night in a hotel there, mooch around in the morning in destination country before then going to where we're staying. I see it as an extra night of holiday.

Get up at 2.30 to put a little make up on and be at airport for 3
It's with Ryanair so need to check in suitcase then go through security then grab breakfast
Normally board 30 mins before which is 5.30 am

This crazy forget the makeup get something to eat on the plane and get up at 4.15

Movingon2024 · 25/02/2024 17:25

I use Newcastle airport most weeks.

If you arrive at 3am literally nothing will be open. At that time, you need maximum 30 mins to clear security. 45 including bag check in.

i take the KLM 6am departure. Arrive 5am for boarding at 5.30. Never missed it yet.

that might be cutting it too fine for you, though, but I would arrive at the earliest 4.30 am. You will still be hanging around.

Sonora25 · 25/02/2024 17:26

how big is Newcastle duty free that you need extra time for browsing?

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 25/02/2024 17:28

Being tired is part of life and is usually curable by a good night's sleep.

nightmareXmas · 25/02/2024 17:28

I understand how you feel, OP. I always choose a later flight whenever possible, and would be anxious in your shoes. But it sounds like you are stuck with it. If it were me I would stay up all night rather than have to get up at 2.30am. I'm a night owl though, so can't fall asleep before 1am at the earliest.

Get a grip. Get to the airport for 2 hours before your flight. Thats plenty of time. Shower the night before. Go to sleep at 10, that’s 5.5 hours sleep. Then a 4 hour sit down on a plane where you can snooze then you’ll be relaxed by the pool with a cocktail and can have as early a night as you like! Booking a later flight would have probably cost hundreds of pounds more and shaved time off your holiday. Your poor OH.

CoconutQueen · 25/02/2024 17:36

Get a grip OP

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 25/02/2024 17:36

YANBU! I have a chronic health condition to be fair, but an early start like that would knock me sideways for at least the first half of the holiday, and it just wouldn’t be worth it. I always opt for afternoon or evening flights.

bruffin · 25/02/2024 17:37

YABU
im going Fuertuventura on Saturday on a 6am flight, you have 4 hours to have a nap!
I cant wait!

UtterlyButterly2048 · 25/02/2024 17:38

YABU. For a 6am flight, when you are staying at an airport hotel, you could fall out of bed at 3.30am, quick shower and a coffee ( essential for me) and off you go! A snooze on the plane (even in the shit economy Europe seats, it’s possible, I’ve done it!) and you are ready to go when you land. We have a 6.20 am flight booked in June. We are at the airport the night before, will have an early dinner, will have an early night and then get up and set off. In the grander scheme of things, it’s not a massive hardship. And, as someone who wear makeup daily, when I’m getting up at that time, it ain’t happening. DH or whoever else we happen to be travelling with can take me as they find me. No fucks given!

Clafoutie · 25/02/2024 17:38

Unless your feeling of dread is related to some sort of condition, or you have small children in tow, I would gently suggest you are getting this a little out of proportion OP, in the grand scheme of things. We’ve all done that, but give yourself a break, and enjoy the holiday!

TwylaSands · 25/02/2024 17:39

A 6am gives you an extra day of holiday compared to the 3pm flight.

Toomuch44 · 25/02/2024 17:40

I'd leapt at your holiday if I had the chance, despite flight times. You're lucky to have a holiday abroad and, having been to Gran Canaria, it would be lovely to go back. Also, the fact you're booked into an airport hotel means it's a lot easier than getting up at 1am and the worry of a delay enroute.

Once you're there, take the opportunity to get a nice coffee, tea or whatever you enjoy, alongside breakfast or a sweet treat and find a table overlooking the runway, and watch the world go by!

Nonewclothes2024 · 25/02/2024 17:40

I agree re timings. I fly A LOT, you can be 45 minutes in the bag drop queue. Then security.

kkloo · 25/02/2024 17:44

Lassiata · 25/02/2024 16:36

Amazes me how many people ignore the 3 hours before for international flights.

It works out better that they ignore it though, it spreads out the time that people arrive at.

The very cautious people arrive 3 hours before (or earlier)
Then there's the people who will arrive with literally just enough time to make it through
And then there's everyone in between.

If everyone arrived 3 hours before then the cautious people or people who hate queueing etc would start arriving even earlier 'just to be safe' 😅

Not on the first flight out in the morning...

Orangeandgold · 25/02/2024 17:45

I usually don’t sleep the night before, I might take a nap earlier so I have energy. And spend most of the flight asleep which I prefer.

Concestor · 25/02/2024 17:47

TedMullins · 25/02/2024 12:36

Yes you’re being ridiculous. I’ve got chronic fatigue and even I can manage early morning flights. Nobody actually gets to the airport 3 hours before! Just arrive at 4am, get up at 3.45, don’t bother with makeup.

Off topic but how do you manage this with chronic fatigue? My daughter has it and I can't get her up before 11am, she really struggles. On holiday last year we basically only had afternoons to do anything because she just can't function. I would love to hear how you manage and any tips.

Booksandwine80 · 25/02/2024 17:49

Oh OP, ignore all the meanies on here. I totally get it. You poor lamb, you stay in bed and I’ll go 😂🙄

BronwenTheBrave · 25/02/2024 17:49

So many red flags here. I wouldn’t tolerate having a surprise holiday bought for me if it meant a 6:30am flight. Time to secure your finances, see a solicitor, and move on. You deserve so much better than this OP.
