Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

We've in the past caught early flights. Less chance of delays. We're 80 miles from the airport which is a bit of a chore. You can sleep on the plane though

mitogoshi · 25/02/2024 16:56

Most airports don't open until 4am for the morning flights, made that mistake. I would roll out of bed at 3.15 in your situation, though if me more like 4am, can apply make up after security if you feel the need

This thread reminds me I’m a bit unusual because I love an airport, hanging out there. I have no idea why. I know it’s a bit shit but I enjoy it anyway.
😂

Actually I'm the same...the whole airport vibe! I'd be glad to be there a long time ahead just to wander and be relaxed. But I wouldn't be worried by lack of sleep!

mitogoshi · 25/02/2024 16:58

Also depending on airport, some have twilight bag drops for early flights, makes life so easy

YANBU. you will lose the first day sleeping! AND you will feel like crap.

They're only going to Gran Canaria, not Mars. A couple of hours shut eye on the plane and she'll be grand for the rest of the day.

"Lose the first day sleeping"

🤣 she's got 4 hours to snooze on the flight. I wonder how some people get through life honestly.

I'm failing to see the issue, you get the most part of the first day actually to enjoy your holiday. Grab a nap on the plane or have a small siesta in the afternoon or even just power on through until a semi reasonable bedtime.

Couldn’t you be up and just before 4am and leave the hotel 4.15? Why such an early get up?

This.

No need for getting up at 230.

Then sleep again on the plane.

getionnn · 25/02/2024 12:29

Get up at 2.30 to put a little make up on and be at airport for 3
It's with Ryanair so need to check in suitcase then go through security then grab breakfast
Normally board 30 mins before which is 5.30 am

You don't need makeup for an early morning flight.

A pathological fear of flying can equal "filled with dread". A 6am flight is not comparable.

I would feel the same. Would never book such an early flight.

Lou98767 · 25/02/2024 17:14

I personally understand where you're coming from. My MIL believes the holiday starts from the airport and where we can afford to live that way we do (no early flights, extra leg room on longer flights when we can afford to upgrade, flying from the closest airport etc.). I think a lot of people view the flying aspect as a means to an end and they only value the abroad bit.

I'm a real home body so when we go away it really has to tick all the boxes. That includes enjoying the traveling there and back and having to make as few sacrifices as possible, otherwise I'd honestly rather save the money.

I always find it strange that people seemingly think that just because something is expensive and not everybody has access to it means you can't find fault in. To me that just sounds like jealously talking rather than objectivity.

The context is important, your partner has done an amazing thing and it's great you're staying so close to minimise the impact of the early flight. We've all had crapy days in life and we've made it through with minimal consequences. Just keep remembering that it feels overwhelming when you fixate on it (easy to do) but in reality it's just a day, it will be gone in a blink and then the good part begins.

Then when it's after the fact and you're talking about future holidays it's a good time to have an open and honest conversation about what you want to prioritise in the holiday plan and no early mornings can be one of yours. It doesn't mean your OH got anything wrong, just something you want to keep in mind moving forward.

Put your makeup on at the airport once through security?

Or stick sunglasses and lipstick on and don’t bother with makeup.

Some people really just want an excuse to be miserable. You don’t need to be at the airport nearly that early, you can have a shower the night before and get an early night, put your make up on after security. If you’re checking a bag, you don’t need to be there three hours early, even two hours would be fine and just sleep on the plane.

OP is going to have 3 hours to kill at Newcastle airport, it might give her something to do!

6am is fine really if you're staying at an airport hotel.

My DH and I flew to Lanzarote yesterday from Manchester on a 7am flight with EasyJet. Our rule is that for a flight before 11am we have an airport hotel.

Our schedule was:

7pm night before, arrive at hotel and do twilight bag drop off
5am wake
5:15am out of bed
5:45 leave hotel and walk to the airport terminal
5:50 enter the Fast Track security queue
6:10 complete security
6:30 arrive at the gate having picked up some food from Boots for the plane
6:40 we were boarded

This is what we have always done.
However this summer I am trying an alternative. Late flight so drive to airport on the day. Arrive at hotel about 8pm so miss the first day. BUT I'm booking an extra night so instead of a night in an airport hotel we will have it at our holiday hotel. Not a massive difference cost wise.

GlasgowGal82 · 25/02/2024 17:20

They say aim to be there three hours before in case you get held up in traffic on your way there. Two hours is plenty of time even in a busy airport to drop bags, get through security and be ready to board 30 minutes in advance.

BronwenTheBrave · 25/02/2024 17:21

YANBU. Do not go on the holiday. It is ruined before it has started.
