Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

I hate early flights too, but just suck it up and it's over quickly.

You absolutely do not need to get up at 2.30 - that's nonsense.

kkneat · 25/02/2024 16:33

You don’t need to get up at 2.30am! Most airports have self service bag drop and Ryanair open their gates much nearer flight time. Even if you are tired for one day so what you sound very ungrateful especially as airport hotel has been booked for the night before

IsleOfPenguinBollards · 25/02/2024 16:35

My last outbound flight was a 6am one, also to the Canary Islands. We weren’t staying in an airport hotel and so in practice, we missed virtually a whole night’s sleep to catch the flight. It didn’t ruin the holiday, but it did spoil the first day or two. We were very overtired and stressed by the time we finally got to our hotel room.

Amazes me how many people ignore the 3 hours before for international flights.

bakebeans · 25/02/2024 16:37

I love an early flight! Exciting. I also read somewhere that the early flights are less likely to be delayed

Dogdo · 25/02/2024 16:37

Jesus Christ. What a wet blanket.

I've never arrived 3 hours before a flight in my life. I've never had a problem. 🤷‍♀️

What happens if you're there two hours before?

LaCasaBuenita · 25/02/2024 16:40

I don’t mind it if I’m going to a hotel where I can relax by the pool even if my room isn’t ready, but it’s horrendous if doing an Airbnb type thing. I will travel to a less convenient airport to avoid having to hang around in some cafe all day, exhausted and boiling to death.

Motherofacertainage · 25/02/2024 16:40

Two hours before will be plenty of time. YABU to get to the airport for 3. You could get up a 3.45 and still have plenty of time to check in and mooch. Don't imagine security or shops will be that busy (or shops actually open) much before 5. Go to bed earlier and sleep on the plane/beach/in your hotel. It's not like you have to do a days work or operate difficult machinery that day (unless there's a huge drip feed and you're the pilot :)).

LaCasaBuenita · 25/02/2024 16:41

The check in desk doesn’t even open 3 hours before so there is literally no point being there that early.

Knitgoodwoman · 25/02/2024 16:41

DH is an airline pilot so does this for a living, he’ll be up at 3-4am for a flight to Gran Canaria, and then do the return leg home! Just try and relax and enjoy yourself, maybe wine could help?!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 25/02/2024 16:42

For a 6am flight when staying a few minutes from the airport I'd get out of bed, brush my teeth and wash my face (would shower the night before) I'd get up at 3.45am and walk across to airport. Check in, go through security, grab some breakfast. Wouldn't faff with make up, or at the very most, some tinted moisturiser, mascara and lip balm. But if you had it in your hand luggage you could always put it on at the airport.

Once at destination, freshen up, have lunch, chill by the pool for a bit, have an afternoon nap then get ready for dinner.

I don't love getting up for an early flight, but it's much better than arriving late and feeling like you have to wait another day to start your holiday properly.

AngeloMysterioso · 25/02/2024 16:43

The flight for your first of two overseas holidays this year is a bit too early for your liking?! Even though you’re staying at a hotel right next to the airport the night before?

Jesus, what a problem to have. I can only imagine the struggle.

Do you see troops of people leaving the airport because they arrived 2 hours before and missed their flights?

Or are they all ok?

Lassiata · 25/02/2024 16:36

Amazes me how many people ignore the 3 hours before for international flights.

Because it’s simply not true.

3h is the maximum time one might need to make a Ryanair flight at Newcastle airport, and the airline is throwing in that number to protect themselves legally if absolute chaos were to ensue. The only reason why you might need 3 hours is if you’re flying at peak time, have a passport that requires a physical visa check (so an extra queue), your boarding pass is malfunctioning so again you need to queue, you have 3 under 5s you can only walk with slowly through the airport, and half the security staff are striking.

Nobody needs 3 hours to check in a bag and make their flight. As a fact, Ryanair don’t open their check-in counters until 4am, so OP would be stuck in a queue for an hour, then have to proceed to departures where half the shops she wants to visit will also be closed.

I take up to 10 flights a month - not once have I missed a flight and I never get there more than 90 mins ahead of departure time (and that’s with checked luggage at hub airports such as Heathrow, Frankfurt, JFK…). All my boarding passes say to allow for 2.5-4 hours. It’s absolute nonsense.

Verbena17 · 25/02/2024 16:43

You are totally BU.
Have a little nap once you’re there and you’ll be good.

It’s Gran Canaria - not like you’re flying to Australia or the US and getting jet lag.
Why on Earth will you need to get up at 2:30am? If hot3l is 2 minute walk from airport?

I always pick the early flight times, I dislike the afternoon flights. I live near the airport I use and would get up at 3.15 for a 6am flight.

I don't like early morning flights either and I would rather pay extra for a later flight or choose another airline. The flight is now booked so try to look past the early start and look forward to the nice holiday waiting for you. Next time be very clear with your husband that before booking he has to double check the details with you. Have a lovely time🏖

UnbelievableLie · 25/02/2024 16:51

In similar circumstances to the OP, we got up at 4, got to baggage check at 4.35, done with security by 5.05 and sat having breakfast for 40 mins before boarding even begun.

Trulyme · 25/02/2024 16:52

I don’t understand the issue.

Just have an early night and have a nap on the plane.

Don’t worry about putting make up on or anything.

This thread reminds me I’m a bit unusual because I love an airport, hanging out there. I have no idea why. I know it’s a bit shit but I enjoy it anyway.
