Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

Best flight, less risk of delay. Catch up on your sleep once there if you need to. Bonus means you're returning flight is usually early and you don't have that limbo feeling on check out day.

Sonora25 · 25/02/2024 16:20

I haven’t seen a physical boarding pass in years. How would she have one for a flight in 2 months?

Hayliebells · 25/02/2024 16:20

YABU. You don't need to be there 3 hours before the flight, despite what Ryanair say. You won't need time to mooch around duty free at 5am, it's 5am why would you want to shop at that time? They may well not be open anyway. Just get up, out, checked in and through security, then sit with a coffee whilst waiting to board. And surely it doesn't take that long to put makeup on? I'd definitely not be leaving the hotel before 4am.

Check-in time is the reason for getting up at 2.30, I think. It takes about 3 hours.

What "takes about 3hrs"?

I live an hour from my nearest airport and I'm unlikely to have even left home 3hrs before departure.

LittleBearPad · 25/02/2024 16:20

The Boots meal deal is my favourite bit.

ginasevern · 25/02/2024 16:21

Blimey OP, how old are you? Unless I've missed some mitigating circumstances (disability for example) why can you get up at 2.30am for one day. Especially as it's for something really lovely and exciting. I mean, you're not going to the gallows. I'm late sixties and wouldn't think twice about it.

This is a very good point!

Pineapple35 · 25/02/2024 16:21

Massively yabu
you are going on a holiday that many will be unable to afford and moaning about a early flight time.
check your privilege

Mumof2teens79 · 25/02/2024 16:22

I'd much prefer 6am to 3pm
3pm with a 4 hour flight
8pm by the time you have collected bags
Coach transfer? 10pm before you check in.
Everytime we have flown afternoon we have been delayed and not arrived at hotel till after dinner/middle of the night.

6am will be one of first flights out, less likely to be delayed. We flew at 9am last month and weren't at the hotel till 4pm

"Imagine being that precious.........

Have you had children? How did you cope?"

Had two thank you! A long time ago when I could cope with zero sleep! I don't have to now, I'd just book a later flight!

Parrotseatthemall · 25/02/2024 16:25

That lovely 3pm flight to Rhodes means you won't get there until almost bed time and your return flight may mean you vacate your room at 11am and get back to blighty around midnight..then travel onwards. You may well be tired then too!

JustWoww · 25/02/2024 16:25

I don’t like an early morning flight but we have done this several times for 3 day Gran Canaria visits and it means you get an afternoon of sun passed out on the sun lounger.
I usually don’t sleep the night before and sleep on the plane

thebestinterest · 25/02/2024 16:26

You’re ridiculous 😂 stay behind then, ffs!

My young family (18mon + DH) and I have a 5am flight which we need to arrive at 3 am to be in time for!!

WildFlowerBees · 25/02/2024 16:26

Op are you a bit of a faffer so need enough time to not feel rushed? Don't worry about it, it's one early morning and a week's holiday doing what you want when you want. Yes it's crap but it won't do you any harm YABU. If a 6am flight is your biggest worry you're doing alright. Have a lovely holiday.

FindingNeverland28 · 25/02/2024 16:28

I’d prefer an earlier flight. That way you’re not wasting most of the day travelling to the airport, at the airport, on the plane and then at the airport on the other end. Get it all done early and you have a good chunk of the day left in Gran Canaria to soak up the sun.

shreknjumps · 25/02/2024 16:29

Huh, just had a look at my boarding passes for Ryanair and it says nothing about what time to arrive. Just when the gate closes which is 30 minutes before the flight but realistically will be still boarding.

Also can't get them 7 weeks in advance 🤔

MrsPatrickDempsey · 25/02/2024 16:29

YABVU.
We did a 0610 flight last weekend. Didn't stay at the airport and left home at about 2am in the end. We all slept on the plane. We felt refreshed when we arrived and had a nap by the pool in the afternoon. Had a bit of a lie in the next morning.
No big deal. Life's too short to worry about this!

Fartooold · 25/02/2024 16:30

whatkatydid2014 · 25/02/2024 15:54

Even 3:45 to arrive for 4 is pretty early. I’m often there at 4:30 for the 6am KLM ones and there is plenty of time to drop off bag and get breakfast in the lounge. It’s rarely that busy but if you are worried pay the £7-8 or whatever for fast track

I'd have said that, but the fast track queue was moving slower than mine last twice I've flown.
Amsterdam???

StarbucksSmarterSister · 25/02/2024 16:30

YABU. You'll be by the pool by lunchtime. I go to Greece a lot and most of the flights I get are early. Yes it's a drag getting up but it's so worth it. Whereas your 3.00pm to Rhodes means that by the time you get your accommodation it'll be 11 or midnight. You lose half a day.

Why would a 6am flight mean zero sleep?

It was a flight that was a present. So you'd throw the present back? How selfish and rude.

Betterbuckleupbarbara · 25/02/2024 16:30

You don’t need to be there 3 hours before, as it’s practically a domestic flight OP. An hour and a half is usually more than enough time.

Check in online, take your bags to the automatic bag drop and find a lounge to relax in.

Fingeronthebutton · 25/02/2024 16:31

DisplayPurposesOnly · 25/02/2024 12:29

Filled with dread about a minor inconvenience in seven weeks time....? If that's meant to be hyperbole for comic effect, it hasn't worked.

😂
OP. Just try a little bit to change your thinking. Other than me me me, think of the millions of people who will never have a holiday.

Papillon23 · 25/02/2024 16:32

Funkyslippers · 25/02/2024 12:55

I'm actually with you there, OP. I avoid early flights as I literally cannot sleep knowing I have to be up in the middle of the night and don't cope well with tiredness but also can't sleep on the plane! I have insomnia at the best of times so this would just exasperate it. YANBU. All these people saying get up at 3.30, you usually have to be there at least 2 hours before the flight and it's not like you can just roll out of bed & walk in to the airport. You'd no doubt still have to pack up from the night before, get dressed, freshen up etc. I'd need about an hour for this

I don't get this - I live an hour's drive from the airport and only got up at 3am for a 6:15 flight.

Everything packed, outfit out ready. Up at 3am, out the door by 3:05, airport carpark by 4:05, at the airport by 4:15.

With an airport hotel surely you shower before you go to bed, and pack a tiny packing cube with PJ's and single uncrumbleable outfit. Wear the same shoes as the day before,.make sure your toiletry bag has the bits you need (toothbrush, hairbrush) at the top and just don't unpack anything else. I'd be pretty prepared to make an effort to pack things up the night before to shave an hour down to 10-15 minutes, and thereby gain 45 minutes of sleep.

Travellinggirly · 25/02/2024 16:32

YABVU - I love an early flight, means you get a proper whole first day. Flying at 3pm means you probably don’t get to your hotel until dinner time and you’ve missed a whole day.
can always have a nap on a sunbed around the pool!

This. And the duty free shops won’t be open at that time in the morning in a tiny airport.
