Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

There's no way I'd do that.. would feel sick and tired even if I managed to 'rest'.. I'd rather not go if I'm honest!

Imagine being that precious.........

Have you had children? How did you cope?

Grammarnut · 25/02/2024 16:04

YABU. I have had to catch planes/ferries at 3 a.m. which is much worse, esp if you are driving to the ferry port.

Dentistlakes · 25/02/2024 16:05

Could be worse. You could be getting a 6am flight for work! I find the dread you build up in your mind is often worse than the reality. Stop torturing yourself and look forward to your holiday!

Grammarnut · 25/02/2024 16:06

Bilingualspingual · 25/02/2024 12:27

Couldn’t you be up and just before 4am and leave the hotel 4.15? Why such an early get up?

Check-in time is the reason for getting up at 2.30, I think. It takes about 3 hours.

TiptoeTess · 25/02/2024 16:06

Another one who thinks you’re being a bit ridiculous, sorry.

3:30 alarm. Get dressed, hair into ponytail. No make up! 😂
3:50 leave hotel
4am arrive at airport
5am through security, have coffee in departure lounge, buy a danish or something for plane
6am flight

There by lunchtime, lazy sunlounger afternoon and then bed at usual time or slightly earlier if needed!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 25/02/2024 16:08

Does Newcastle airport not have online check in and automated bag drop then ? Or a row of desks for all Ryanair flights rather than one specific to that destination?

Keychangeoff · 25/02/2024 16:08

Why would you need to be up at 2.30 am ? That's more of an issue than the early flight.

Retrievemysanity · 25/02/2024 16:08

I hate getting up early for flights too but given what you’ve said, I think I would lay all my clothes out the night before, get up at 4am quickly dress and put on make up and head over the airport for 4.30. I’d take some pain au chocolat with me and grab a coffee en route. Some people don’t do well with being tired and I’m one of them so I totally get it!

Scottishskifun · 25/02/2024 16:09

Each to their own I prefer early flights means you usually get the afternoon to relax and the flight tends to be quieter as most people snooze

Jenry · 25/02/2024 16:09

You don’t need to be there that early.
yabu. How lucky to have a lovely holiday to look forward to!

BananaSplitsss · 25/02/2024 16:10

First world problems indeed.

Gently: get a grip.

Seriously . Or don’t go.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 25/02/2024 16:10

OP, I get it. I won’t do those early flights again as it’s OK saying you get an extra full day at your destination but you’re too tired to enjoy it.

I would suggest having a sleep when you get to the hotel so you can go out for dinner and enjoy the evening

Go. Make the best of the early flight and ensure that you never book such an early flight again.

Keychangeoff · 25/02/2024 16:11

There's no way you need to check in 3 hours before a flight to the Canaries. 2 hours absolute max. You're building this up in your head OP. It's really not that early because you're in the airport hotel the night before. Try to relax and see the early start as getting more out of your first day on holiday as you'll be on the beach before sundown!

puzzledout · 25/02/2024 16:11

@Grammarnut as countless people have pointed out, no need for three hour check in time!

Cerealkiller4U · 25/02/2024 16:11

Deebee90 · 25/02/2024 12:27

I would rather have an early morning flight then an afternoon one any day. You can rest and nap on the plane Be there for lunchtime and then relax or snooze by the pool. With an afternoon or evening flight you waste the day waiting to go to the airport. Can’t think of anything worse and I work in one.

Oh
I gosh nooooo. Airports are one of my favourite places to ever be!!! I know I’m weird. But I love them. Even just picking people up in one xx

newyearnewnothing · 25/02/2024 16:12

So you are causing drama and lack of sleep for a mooch in duty free and to do your makeup???
Ok!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/02/2024 16:13

getionnn · 25/02/2024 12:34

It says on my boarding pass arrive 3 hours before for international flight 💁‍♀️

You might want to check that with Ryanair, OP
IME they never open more than 2 hours before a fllght - or rather they may be open, but that'll be for flights before yours and if you turn up early they'll make you wait until "your batch" of check ins is open

Airports are one of my favourite places to ever be!!! I know I’m weird. But I love them. Even just picking people up in one

You and me both, @Cerealkiller4U
Call me a saddo but just the departure boards excite me - all those wonderful places to see for the price of a ticket Grin

shreknjumps · 25/02/2024 16:13

Newcastle? 🤣 no way do you need to be at the airport at 3am

HoneyBadger525 · 25/02/2024 16:14

YABU. Does it really matter for one day? I’d rather get there and be on holiday earlier! Sod an afternoon flight, what a waste of a day.

Alittlebitwary · 25/02/2024 16:15

We always go for early flights, and we have 2 children under 4, and we don't stay in an airport hotel! I think you're being a bit soft, it's just getting up earlier! unless you have some kind of medical problem that means you're unable to wake up.

Early morning is best because the roads are quiet, the airport is quiet, security tends to be quiet because it'll be one of the first flights of the day, and you can just rest on the plane on the way there.
I think once at the airport you just wake up and feel better/ less groggy then you can laze about for a couple of hours, get breakfast, maybe book yourselves an airport lounge to guarantee a seat?

Also, it means when you arrive you can have a wander around your accomodation and get your bearings, unpack your things, get any bits from the shop you need, so you don't waste any time doing that the following morning and therefore have the whole day free.

I think embrace it and have a lovely holiday!

fiorentina · 25/02/2024 16:15

Wow. I’m amazed at some responses but each to their own. It will be a fun trip when you’re there just focus on that. Get to the airport, have a decent breakfast and take a good book or downloads on your phone. You can chill when you arrive, don’t need to cook or clean and can have an early night. Enjoy.

SoRainbowRhythms · 25/02/2024 16:16

I would love it if this was the extent of my problems.

kinkyredboots · 25/02/2024 16:16

YABU- the roads will be quiet, first flight of the day is rarely delayed, gets you going and you will be there in time for lunch and a snooze.

CagneyAndLazy · 25/02/2024 16:17

getionnn · 25/02/2024 12:34

It says on my boarding pass arrive 3 hours before for international flight 💁‍♀️

You've got a boarding pass already for a flight in 7 weeks' time?

Is it an actual boarding pass or a generic ticket/email saying to arrive so early?

I fly constantly for work and if I was staying at a hotel on the airport I'd be sound asleep until 4am for a non-long haul . You're over-egging this massively, OP.

CoraPirbright · 25/02/2024 16:18

Sounds incredibly feeble to me. And the world won’t end if you don’t have make up on. Still, you do you.
