Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

Get up at 2.30 to put a little make up on and be at airport for 3
It's with Ryanair so need to check in suitcase then go through security then grab breakfast
Normally board 30 mins before which is 5.30 am

Where are you flying from?

Vousnepouvezpasdiscuteravecdesstupides · 25/02/2024 15:35

You seem very ungrateful.
Many people would jump at a free holiday no matter what time they had to get up

Selfish bastard, definitely red flag, LTB!

Or...... just get over yourself princess?

lotsofpeoplenametheirswords · 25/02/2024 15:36

We always pick the early flight. A nice night in airport hotel with a carpet picnic before going to sleep early. I pack beach/pool stuff in hand luggage if we're on a sun holiday and enjoy a nice long afternoon doing absolutely nothing as soon as we arrive! I can't stand mid afternoon/evening flights where you're jiggered as soon as you get there!

OutOfTheHouse · 25/02/2024 15:39

I understand OP. I always prefer to be super early. However in this case you don’t need to get to the airport before 4am.

No it's not my first time abroad we go abroad twice a year but I always have the fear of missing my flight.
We are flying from Newcastle and staying in the doubletree opposite
Last year tho our flight home was at 4.30 and we didn't get picked up by TUI till 2pm for a 30 min transfer and still made it but it was rush rush rush
I like to look around duty free then go to boots for a meal deal on the plane etc

But you don’t need to do this. You can pick up a meal deal the day before, you can miss out duty free (it’s a rip off anyway). You’re being too anxious!

It says on my boarding pass arrive 3 hours before for international flight 💁‍♀️

That's ridiculous

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 25/02/2024 15:44

I'd be more pissed OH was tight to be honest.

Tight? He bought her a holiday for Valentine's, she should be very grateful. Most people I know either don't bother with it or are happy with a card and chocolates/flowers etc.

Fartooold · 25/02/2024 15:49

Flying from Newcastle?
It is busy at that time in morning but I fly at 6am regularly and never get to the airport before 4:30.
You could leave the hotel at 4:15 and have time to spare.

cerebuswannabe · 25/02/2024 15:50

Early flights are better than later flights! No waiting around and get there and home at a decent time.

If you are there at 3am they will not even have the counter open yet. I’d get up at 3:45, shove on clothes & head straight over. Have a nap on plane and sort any make up out when you get there after the nap.

fussychica · 25/02/2024 15:53

We try to avoid really early flights but for some destinations there's no choice from our regional airport. I can't nap on the plane for health reasons so that doesn't help. We've binned off a number of holidays recently due to flight times.
However, you don't need to get up quite that early, forget the make up until you're through security and hanging around for the flight. As it's all booked I'd just suck it up this time.

whatkatydid2014 · 25/02/2024 15:54

Even 3:45 to arrive for 4 is pretty early. I’m often there at 4:30 for the 6am KLM ones and there is plenty of time to drop off bag and get breakfast in the lounge. It’s rarely that busy but if you are worried pay the £7-8 or whatever for fast track

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2024 15:54

Just looked at the flight departures for Newcastle for tomorrow.

The Tenerife flight is the second of the day. There is a flight to Amsterdam 5 mins before.

There isn't another one until 6.30.

If both flights are full, that's a maximum of 360 people in the airport at 4am. A maximum. Many will be travelling hand luggage only on a Ryanair flight cos they are cheap bastards.

How long do you really think it will take to clear security?

I've flown from Manchester a couple of times in the last year. Manchester has had some of the biggest issues with time getting through security. One of those flights was Friday Evening so it was mental at the airport. Even then it took 30mins. I've done it in 10mins before.

Genuinely you probably don't need to be there 2hrs before, but I probably would for cautions sake. Even if you want to wander at your leisure around Boots.

Willmafrockfit · 25/02/2024 15:54

i think you are being unreasonable,
you dont even need to really travel to get to your flight!

ProfessorInkling · 25/02/2024 15:55

6am flights are the best.

You do not need three hours. My last 6am flight I think I got to the airport for about 4.45. Security, coffee, gate. Easy.

toddlermam · 25/02/2024 15:57

I understand. Being overtired literally makes me sick (I have chronic illnesses) and I find it so difficult to sleep early if I know I've gotta get up early! But honestly I'd just suck it up, it's a fairly short flight and you can have a little nap on the plane.

IDontOftenComment · 25/02/2024 15:58

It’s a lovely gift, an early start means you enjoy a full first day, you’re even staying at the airport, just go to bed early first night.
Hope your not whinging to your OH about it OP!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 25/02/2024 15:58

Well I don't know Newcastle airport and whether or not that is particularly slow moving in terms of queues but I wouldn't arrive at an airport 3 hours before the flight. Is this something specific with that airport ? If we have an early flight we tend to pay £5 pp to fast track the security and I wouldn't arrive earlier than two hours before . That's Birmingham though .

I think the inconvenience or otherwise of the 6 am flight will depend on whether you are able to get into your accommodation when you get there or at least drop your cases off .

We have actually just booked an extra day for an apartment next winter as the flight is at 545 and we want to make sure that we can get straight in when we arrive .

safetycat · 25/02/2024 16:00

Sorry, I hate getting up early but this is such a self-inflicted problem on your part. Not even my nonagenarian grandparents allow 3.5 hours at the airport and they move at the speed of snails.

Belovedbagle · 25/02/2024 16:00

There's no way I'd do that.. would feel sick and tired even if I managed to 'rest'.. I'd rather not go if I'm honest!

Pushkinini · 25/02/2024 16:02

No need to get up at 2.30. 3.30 would be fine. Clean teeth, get dressed, stick on some slap, what, 15 mins max? 2 minute walk to the airport, check in bags and you'll be in the lounge by 4.30 at the latest. Only an hour to kill before boarding.

margotsdevil · 25/02/2024 16:03

YABVU and I say that as someone who hates early morning flights. Do the makeup post security, and you may find that RyanAir allow you to check luggage the night before which also saves time.

You'd give up an entire holiday to avoid a few hours' tiredness?

How do you cope if you have a bad night's sleep?
