I’ve inherited a very good knife and a little bit of money and I’ve used the knife today and it’s so sharp it’s life changing. It’s been a joy to chop everything and it’s made me wonder what I’m missing out on. What’s the thing you have that’s expensive but worth every penny?

We’ve paid for air con to be installed in our bedrooms. It’s a game changer on those boiling summer nights we’re getting more and more often. It was indulgent but I regret nothing!

Withaddedlint · 24/02/2024 22:19

@bringmorewashing which robovac have you got?

Chypre · 24/02/2024 22:22

Sharp does not necessarily mean "expensive", maybe it's just maintained properly? Otherwise - I do have Japanese knives, cast iron skillets, goose down pillows and duvets. All of those I've had for about 6-8 years, still as good as new. I don't mind buying 1.75£ nail polish - it only will be on my nails for 2-3 days, but the items that I will be touching/using daily for weeks and months on end I don't mind spending extra.
Virgin Pure water filter/dispenser
Dyson Airwrap (had it for 4 years)
Colombia/Patagonia outdoors gear (we live by the coast and have 2 dogs)
Lead crystal glassware (had for 10 years)
Bone china dinnerware (wedding gift)
Nespresso machine + Child thermal cups - the pods seem costly but making my own coffee in a thermal cup still is 3x cheaper for daily commute!

MaverickBoon · 24/02/2024 22:23

@goingdownfighting - SAME, re the Contigo Westloop. My God I love that mug - had my current one for 6ish years and it's still going strong. I've probably taken upwards of 3000 cups of tea out in it, genuinely 😂

Agree with pp re bamboo socks - Boots do surprisingly good plain black ones. Posh Dualit Architect toaster and kettle - they've given me joy for years although both are now actually getting a bit unreliable, thinking about.

Also agree with Didriksons coats - my oldest one is 10yrs old and invincible, I bloody love it. It's the perfect apocalypse coat 😂

Slippers - I like Giesswein or Haflinger boiled wool type ones. They don't last forever (not if you wear them as much as I do!) but they're just perfect.

Barney16 · 24/02/2024 22:25

Smeg coffee machine. I love it. It looks amazing and coffee in the morning is a joy.

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 24/02/2024 22:30

My cleaner / ironing lady….she is my guilty pleasure and I love her to bits..

GetOutGetOutGet · 24/02/2024 22:32

4 season king size duvet (made up of a thicker and a thinner layer that you can button together or use separately)

Proper skincare regime from The Ordinary

Getting the car cleaned inside-out every few months for 15£, just not worth doing yourself

Fishbox delivery every 2 weeks - has made me do lots more interesting cooking

Cleaner every fortnight, she also tidies up and folds the laundry!

Femme2804 · 24/02/2024 22:32

Range rover velar with heated steering wheel and massage heated chair. Such a game changer. I can drive while having a massage

Lemonademoney · 24/02/2024 22:32

Really good feather pillows and some proper pillow protectors.

My Sage coffee machine - my morning coffee is a thing of joy.

Airfryer has been a game changer in this house

Good quality thermos food and drink flasks. A bigger outlay but have saved a fortune.

Good quality windproof cyclist thermal layers. Keep me toasty dog walking.

Decent walking boots and proper wool thermal socks.

Not a physical thing but Appliance insurance. Worth it's weight in gold

Appliance insurance is an absolute rip off.

mitogoshi · 24/02/2024 22:35

My good knives, also a hob to oven casserole dish.

IDontDrinkTea · 24/02/2024 22:52

Coverless duvets. The whole thing goes in the washing machine, hang it over the bannister to dry then chuck it back on the bed at bedtime. Never changing a duvet cover again is just a joy

Not exactly electrical items but I pay for help wherever I can justify it.
Lawn mowed
Bins cleaned
Dog walker x 2 per week when I work
Gardener when hedges need trimming
Handyman when necessary

Small things, but it just makes me so happy to have this practical help. I'd rather forgo a holiday for them.

I agree. My luxuries are cleaner 2 hours a week, gardener 1-3 hours a month, handyman when needed.

Moier · 24/02/2024 23:04

A fantastic cool gel memory foam mattress from Jysk.. Best one I've ever had.

ADHDGURL · 24/02/2024 23:10

Egyptian cotton sheets. Can't think about sleeping in any others
Cleaner, twice a month
Sending out the ironing..This is my favourite. I can't believe how easy it is to get ready for work with a cupboard full of neat pressed clothes. It's changed my life.

MaidOfSteel · 24/02/2024 23:14

PandaChopChop · 24/02/2024 19:47

A heated steering wheel!!! What kind of car do you have? I get terribly cold hands when I drive.

A pair of buttery soft leather gloves. Cheaper than a new car.

Februaryismyfavourite · 24/02/2024 23:16

Totally agree about sharp knives. Cooking is so much easier.

I have a handheld shark crumb hoover. With a 3 year old, it's a game changer.

And only a tiny thing but I really like it and don't know why I didn't do it before. I now buy very cheap face wipes and packs of tissues and have them in my dressing table drawer so when I'm applying make up, I can wipe my hands and fingers clean really easily. No more getting up to wash it off but it doesn't really come off and then ends up on a towel...it doesn't cost much but I never used to buy anything 'extra' and this really helps.

I also love our drinks fridge.

I would install air con if we could afford it! I hate anything over about 28 degrees.

solsticelove · 24/02/2024 23:18

My expensive luxury is my cleaner. Love her so much.

After her, items that are expensive but so worth it are my car, the underfloor heating in my bathroom, good pans and knives, my Didriksons coat and a good flask and stainless steel lunch boxes and water bottles. They’ve all been going for years so good value in reality.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 24/02/2024 23:22

The Garnier micellar water with the pink cap. Takes all my make up off and is cheap as chips.

At the other end of the scale, I really, really value our cleaner. I’ve hit the jackpot as she is incredibly good and reliable and I trust her completely. I love Friday afternoons as she comes in the morning and it improves my mood no end.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/02/2024 23:24

Heated steering wheel, heated seats and an electric boot. I’m riddled with arthritis so they make life easier.

Self cleaning oven.

Heat pump tumble dryer

Agree about sharp knives and the air fryer.

Kitchen aid.

Lifeomars · 24/02/2024 23:27

Good quality bedding and silk pillow cases.

OooScotland · 24/02/2024 23:28

A Japanese made automatic rice cooker.
