I’ve inherited a very good knife and a little bit of money and I’ve used the knife today and it’s so sharp it’s life changing. It’s been a joy to chop everything and it’s made me wonder what I’m missing out on. What’s the thing you have that’s expensive but worth every penny?

Airfryer has been a game changer in this house

Good quality thermos food and drink flasks. A bigger outlay but have saved a fortune.

Good quality windproof cyclist thermal layers. Keep me toasty dog walking.

Decent walking boots and proper wool thermal socks.

Not a physical thing but Appliance insurance. Worth it's weight in gold

100% agree about the flasks I think they save loads of money in the long run once you get into the habit of using them. A decent hot drink or soup when you're having a manic work day or a hike in the wilderness is bloody wonderful.

Also a takeaway cup of coffee when it's freezing outside is a bag of shite compared to an insulated mug.

Iced water after 6 hours on the beach in high summer - that's living right there.

Never mind the low environmental impact side of things.

Thelnebriati · 24/02/2024 23:35

Dehumidifier, new mattress, and a very nice food processor which has already paid for itself.

Wetblanket78 · 24/02/2024 23:36

My LG smart fridge i wanted more fridge space so I could get all our fruit in. We kept getting fruit flies and previous cheaper fridge freezers would have a lot of water gathering in the bottom. We don't have that problem with this our food also stays fresher. Including straweberries and raspberries which used to go mouldy if we didn't eat same day. Well worth the money.

I LOVE all of these. Who said about the Isabel marant bag?!?

Pressure cooker which has completely changed the way I cook.
Dualit toaster
Touch bedside light
Decent garden loppers

Couldyounot · 24/02/2024 23:38

Decent pans
Decent kitchen knives
Mont Blanc fountain pen

mollyfolk · 24/02/2024 23:39

A big freezer, a Dyson, an air fryer, a cleaner, a childminder who feeds my kids healthy dinners and a really comfortable mattress. You are so right about the decent knife - I always pack one for self catering holidays.

All worth their weight in gold.

pastypirate · 24/02/2024 23:40

Leather country boots for dog walking. Mind we're only £60 as they were an unwanted gift my friend sold to me but the rrp was over £100.

I will never wear wellies again they are knee high, super cosy and completely water proof. I've waded many times in them.

And they look so nice. And this is after I wasted hundreds on joules and hunter wellies for years.

Notthatcatagain · 24/02/2024 23:40

Dyson hairdryer, Ninja 9in1, Denby baking tins and an air con unit in our bedroom which is in full sun from midday until sunset, it also heats so lovely and warm in the winter for pennies

We got a present of this plate type thing that you can put a pot just off the hob on. It’s amazing!! Also we have a good small knife for peeling and I love it!!

You mean a trivet?!

witmum · 24/02/2024 23:43

Throwing out all socks and replacing them with all of the same ones £25 well spent.

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 24/02/2024 23:50

i have some really good large knives but nothing beats Victorinox paring knives. Super cheap and brightly coloured handles so easy to spot in the drawer.

An ex boyfriend gave me a serrated one 27 years ago and I still use it and it has never been sharpened though the serration has worn.

Maybe this thread is a bit beyond most people's expectations!!

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 24/02/2024 23:53

Heated coat, bought during lockdown as I had to spend a lot of time sat in the car waiting for my mum to have cameras up every orifice they could find. Still don't know what's wrong with her, it's unpleasant but seemingly not life threatening. At least I don't get cold.

Wetblanket78 · 24/02/2024 23:55

Forgot to mention my Tefal ingenio pan's and this can cook both on the hob and in the oven. Non stick as well so easy to clean. I'll never buy cheap supermarket shite again.

Having quality appliances serviced! I’m still using my 1998 Dyson and it had its every-few-year service just last year - it’s good as new. Costs me about 30 - 70 quid each time and it’s miles better than friends’ modern vacuums! Ditto my 20 year old Zanussi washer dryer!

ShakespeareInTurmoil · 25/02/2024 00:06

Oh and Denby crockery. I’m still using mine a decade later and looks great and is durable. You can pick it up quite cheap as seconds or used off eBay. My pattern is still manufactured so building a set over time is doable.

Dyson hairdryer. DP bought it. It dries my hair in 4 minutes, and really nicely. But SO expensive.

Snap.
I was horrified at the price when I realised how much my DH had spent. But it dries my really thick hair so fásta, and I can do my 2 DDs ling hair in a few mins.

OvertiredandConfused · 25/02/2024 00:19

Thermomix. Had it nearly eight years and use it at least 4 times per week. Everything from soups to Victoria sponge.

A proper tomato knife. Thin and sharp. A joy to use

Proper storage solutions in every room planned for what we actually need.

Strawberrypicnic · 25/02/2024 00:33

A cleaner

elsx · 25/02/2024 00:52

Love posts like this! Few from me - Dyson airwrap, tumble dryer, wine fridge (good for xmas and hosting), chest freezer for batch cooking, my slow cooker - had it years, god send for winter night with work all day, our dog, and not day to day life but business class flights, we save all year for them, as a nervous flyer it makes me feel safe and worth every penny

IGrewUpElsewhere · 25/02/2024 01:00

My expensive car. I live in the US and routinely drive in excess of 25,000 miles per year. I could have purchased a cheaper car that could have gotten me from A to B the same, and it probably would have been a smarter financial decision but I LOVE my car with all of its creature comforts.

Oh, yes! Good knives are a game changer! You know what else is? Good bedding!!!
