I’ve inherited a very good knife and a little bit of money and I’ve used the knife today and it’s so sharp it’s life changing. It’s been a joy to chop everything and it’s made me wonder what I’m missing out on. What’s the thing you have that’s expensive but worth every penny?

I sent our knives away to be professionally sharpened. That was definitely worth the money.

A car with a heated steering wheel

Hatty65 · 24/02/2024 19:42

Duck down pillows. For some reason I've put up with old cheap pillows for years. These are lovely.

BCBird · 24/02/2024 19:45

I know what you mean about a knife. I remember being on holiday, cooking a meal and wondering why it was so easy doing the prep- turns out it was the knife. I have laser hair removal too. On my face no way could I have on my fanny- too painful.

BCBird · 24/02/2024 19:45

Weekly investment- a cleaner

Walking boots that keep feet dry and warm all weathers - dog walking
Superking feather down duvet
Decent car after many cheap ones - now have a heated steering wheel which is bliss on sore cold fingers and the windscreen and back just magically de-ice almost at the touch of a button.

A heated steering wheel!!! What kind of car do you have? I get terribly cold hands when I drive.

I bet the knife you inherited is old but brilliant op. I inherited a potato peeler my mum had for years, it looks old and done but its brilliant and still sharp.
Old things seemed to be made better.

A £700 bean to cup coffee machine

RosesAndHellebores · 24/02/2024 19:48

High quality colander. It was £25 in 1991. It's still going strong.

Agree with good knives and boiling water tap.

Good quality Egyptian cotton sheets - 200 or 400 are sufficient. I bought a 100% cotton sheet from Sainsburys. I thought £15 was amazing. And then we slept on it. It was like sleeping on a brillo pad.

Good slippers with some arch support. Absolute deal breaker.

Quality, branded popsocks - they might be £9.99 for three but they are much more comfy and don't run to holes like cheapies from M&S. Wolsey are good.

Not exactly electrical items but I pay for help wherever I can justify it.
Lawn mowed
Bins cleaned
Dog walker x 2 per week when I work
Gardener when hedges need trimming
Handyman when necessary

Small things, but it just makes me so happy to have this practical help. I'd rather forgo a holiday for them.

Do bought me a pair of le chameau wellies and they’ve changed my life. I walk the dog everyday in a really wet, muddy field and they’re totally waterproof, warm and comfortable. I’ve heard they last a long time too so I think cost per wear possibly better than cheaper ones

I second this, I wear mine pretty much all day. I bought fur insoles (also from Le Chameau) to go in the bottoms and they keep my feet so warm.

Moveoverdarlin · 24/02/2024 19:54

Good bedding. I buy all mine from a company called Linen Bundle online and it’s a game changer.

Pigglyplaystruant99 · 24/02/2024 19:54

Hot tap and showering area outside for our large, double coated dog. Just bought a power head with a shampoo/conditioner dispenser for the hosepipe. Game changer.
Air fryer - abused on that I shove everything into it. I can make one scone if I fancy it, or chuck dumpling mixture into it 😁

Lallybroch · 24/02/2024 19:55

Emma King size base and mattress, Ikea King size feather and down duvet = heaven. I love my bed! My Welligog boots - always have warm and dry feet and they fit my large calves.

Strangeness · 24/02/2024 20:00

Good wool socks
good knickers
a good frying pan
wool duvet

JMSA · 24/02/2024 20:01

Coverless duvets. Only wish I'd bought them years ago.

Our RR Vogue has a heated steering wheel and the seats have both a warm & a cool setting (great if you're menopausal).

100% Hungarian Goose Down duvets. Like sleeping under a cloud.

Fortnightly Shellac. So nice knowing my nails always look immaculate.

Range Rover Vogue. I disapproved of these for many years, until we got one. OMG there's no other car like it.

There are so many Range Rover vogue thefts in my area, they must cost a fortune to insure?

Containerhome · 24/02/2024 20:06

Instant pot. I just got one which is also an air Fryer. It air fries just fine..but decided I'm not an air Fryer fan. So will only use that function occasionally.

But u have always used a multi cooker. Ours.died recently so the instant pot was the best next choice.

I want to get one of those dish washing racks that stand over the sink..so you can leave them to dry and drip into the sink instead of leaving stagnant water on the draining board and freeing up space for pots etc.

Containerhome · 24/02/2024 20:07

And insoles for shoes. I love my skechers as I have flat feet. The ones I have feels like walking on a cloud. I have insoles for flat feet and they fit nicely inside. And a decent winter coat

I don't know how much the insurance is but we live rurally which probably brings it down?

willstarttomorrow · 24/02/2024 20:10

A service wash. I got rid of the tumble dryer and just drop off a weeks washing with my favorite detergent and it is ready and beautifully folded by the end of the day. So easy to put away.

fabio12 · 24/02/2024 20:11

@PandaChopChop It's a very nice Volvo Grin I went through a year thinking I had arthritis and even had it on in the summer as my grip was so sore! It has 3 settings so the top one can feel almost burny after 3hrs driving, but I like that in a weird way!

PandaChopChop · 24/02/2024 20:14

Decent kitchen knives.
In fact they're so good I quite recently had to go to A&E owing to the fact that I nearly severed my finger in half. Quite scary that one 😬

Otherwise, a heated airer, Eufy (self emptying robovac) and an electric fire. Granted, the fire was very expensive brand new but I got it second hand for £15 because they just wanted rid! I don't use it for heat but it's lovely and makes the lounge really homely.
