I’ve inherited a very good knife and a little bit of money and I’ve used the knife today and it’s so sharp it’s life changing. It’s been a joy to chop everything and it’s made me wonder what I’m missing out on. What’s the thing you have that’s expensive but worth every penny?

@Nbobun i agree and want one of those. Way better - my freezer is way too narrow.

Pipsquiggle · 28/02/2024 15:52

Came here to say:

A Cleaner - I love mine, she's been today. The house is wonderful.
Quooker boiling tap
Neoprene lined wellies
A really good walking jacket (Didrikson)
A superking size bed and memory foam mattress, the sleep quality is amazing
Ultrabland cleanser from Lush - lasts for ages

Giggorata · 28/02/2024 16:00

Quality leaf tea
Good knives, boots, saucepans, underwear,
Cleaner

One thing we don't want is thick, soft, fluffy towels.
In my family, we like them rough, if not downright hard. I suppose it's from those boarding school years…

TicTac80 · 28/02/2024 16:01

Thermomix
Robovac (my upstairs one mops floors too)
Airfryer
instant Pot
chest freezer
food dehydrator
litter robot
microchip controlled cat flap and feeders

Some of these things I bought when I inherited some money, some I had from years back, and I inherited the dehydrator.

Two of my cats are on a prescription diet. The app for the feeders and cat flap let me know when the cats are in/out of the house, and their feeding patterns.

The litter robot saves a lot of faff.

The kitchen items I use almost daily, particularly the Thermomix.

The robovacs help to keep my floors clean.

I work FT and have two kids (single parent), so anything that makes my life easier is always a win.

Omg, I have been getting biab for a few months now, lasts 3-4 weeks, much stronger than shellac and I love that nails always look nice!

Me too, so much stronger. I have quite a physical job and enjoy having really neat looking hands for 3-4 weeks now.

Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner. After owning a normal Dyson since 2008 that was as heavy as a ton of bricks, this one is a breath of fresh air. No more lugging a ball & chain around my neck so to speak.

Kärcher window vac that can clear up window condensation. I live in a Georgian tenement flat (in a conservation area, B-listed), huge sash & case windows that would cost an arm and a leg to double glaze. They regularly steam up overnight after a cold night and drip from the inside glass - danger of mould forming on the inside of the wooden window frames. Kärcher does the job! And to see how much water Kärcher actually collects - unbelievable!

Light switches connected to Alexa — makes a big difference if I have my hands full or in the dark when switch isn’t conveniently located. Feels good when I hear “her” respond “OK” as the light goes on — like having a personal servant and no one else has ever immediately done what I asked.
Second IPad for when I do research so I can check two documents without changing screens and losing my place.
Audible membership for talking books as by the evening trying to read is too much effort at my age. If I fall asleep I can just repeat it.
Could exist without any of the above but they give me pleasure

Beautiful bypass shutters for the patio doors. Transformed the whole room

ClematisBlue49 · 28/02/2024 17:21

Sony noise-cancelling headphones. Completely indispensable to my sanity.

Not really a product, but laser hair removal. Proper laser as a proper clinic

Did I say laser hair removal?

Have 0 fanny hairs or underarm hairs, smooth legs all the time. Amazing stuff. It's been worth it's £££

Haven't read the whole thread and probably picking up on this too late but it sounds amazing! @lordhavedarcey if you don't mind me asking, do you have fair skin and dark hair? I've got a slightly reddy tinge to my hair and last time I looked into it, was told laser wouldn't work for me

Allfur · 28/02/2024 17:30

Zero fanny hairs?!

HahaBooHiss · 28/02/2024 17:31

Decent Hoover/decent carpet cleaner. The joys of adulting 😂

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 28/02/2024 17:44

Ice maker
A contigo and a hydra flask - combined with the ice maker I can drink iced water at work all day.

My wonderful cleaner

My Soup maker - uses all the leftover veggies

My 60 + year old Kenwood Chef - I don’t use it every day but when “the big mixer” is needed, there is nothing better.

aloris · 28/02/2024 17:59

I bought a really good, $$, waterproof down winter coat; every time I wear it I feel so warm and happy. So much better than when I was a poor college student and had to shiver every time I went outside in my cheapo coat.

Madcats · 28/02/2024 18:29

YY to Contigo mugs (but watch out of the size of the base if you want to use it in the car).

I managed to "kill" the motor on my 1950's Kenwood (sob), so plan to get it renovated this year. There are a couple of cos who do this. I have to make do with my Bamix or hard work for now.

At a very cheap level, I do rate Uniball eye gel(?) pens (Mitsubishi pen co).

At the other end of the scale, Riedel glasses are marvellous (and sometimes get stocked at TK Maxx). The glass is so thin.

It's not uniform chopping. Good for vegetarian dishes, chillis, bolognaise, stews, casseroles, salads. I chop carrots, onions, celery, peppers. It's not as tough as a food processor but less faff. I've got a disability so it helps a lot.

Thank you so much for this! I have been looking for something like this for ages (had a mini one for years that did toddler things then later chopping garlic and ginger) and thought it would be fab to get a bigger version without all the faffy add-ons of processors.

I love these suggestions. Thank you keep them coming. We have a robo hoover but we also have a very hairy dog so it’s constantly full of hair and texts all the time saying it’s stuck.

He sounds very needy! 😂

Smart lightbulbs are great. Not sure about all brands but with Hue you can get a light-switch sized remote to switch groups of them on and off all at together (we have a lot of lamps). We've a big open-plan area and we hardly use traditional light switches now we have this fixed to the wall.

I've recently added a couple of Ninja zero stick frying pans to the kitchen as I am so fed up with the non-stick, err...sticking.

Slightly random qn, but has anybody managed to buy fitted sheets that don't shrink and come off a deep mattress if you sit reading in bed with a cuppa before work? I keep seeing adverts for ones with grippy elastic online, but they aren't cheap.

Soak and sleep sheets!

We inherited one with the house and although the ice and water feature is great, the freezer section isn't as big or wide as you think. You can't fit anything too wide in it.
I'd love to have one like the ones I saw in the US, where the freezer section are drawers across the whole width of the the fridge freezer, but it's not easy to find here.

I think these are the French style fridge freezers. Sometimes called French door fridge freezer

Wigtopia · 28/02/2024 23:23

A bunch of rechargeable batteries and a couple of charging wotsits to recharge them in.

it got so annoying trying to remember to recycle the dead ones that were non-rechargeable and ended up with a bunch of dead batteries in a bag near the front door. Doesn’t help that there are so few places to drop them off for recycling 🫣

Oooo, you reminded me of one - you can get rechargeable AA and AAA batteries with USB C ports on them for charging. They usually come with a one-to-four cable splitter too.

I've got a bunch of them for our remotes and computer mice.

@ntmdino I would be really interested in getting some of those.
Could you post a link to them please?

A cleaner, a childminder and an ironing lady.

Paying for hold luggage when flying. Means I can take all my preferred toiletries (have sensitive skin) and medications as well as a good range of clothes, shoes etc without compromising. Also makes the airport experience more pleasant.

A gardener.

A smaller house that is mortgage free. Easier to clean and the decluttering process involved when moving was extremely satisfying and means I know exactly what I've got. I've kept it clutter free too and every day when I wake up I feel so happy to be in my little house.
