I’ve inherited a very good knife and a little bit of money and I’ve used the knife today and it’s so sharp it’s life changing. It’s been a joy to chop everything and it’s made me wonder what I’m missing out on. What’s the thing you have that’s expensive but worth every penny?

Stairlift (being fitted on Tuesday).
I know this will make a massive difference to my life.

We thought about a stairlift, but my husband suffered from seizures, so it wouldn't have been safe. Had a Stiltz home lift installed instead-twice the price, but so useful! It only took 2 days to install, and it's also ideal for carrying laundry and shopping between floors.

While it's lovely to have good quality things, I sometimes throw money at having lots of something instead, so I'm never scrabbling about looking fir things or wanting something that's in the wash. So lots of travel mugs, a few heated throws so there's on at my desk, one on the sofa etc.
Plus the loveliest pyjamas your budget allows, I bloody love good quality pyjamas.

We don't have much spare cash, though fortunate enough to solvent pretty much and I try to do something similar. So if we keep running out of clean tea towels/pants/tissues/glasses/drinks bottles etc, I buy a few more and it helps make life a little easier without too much expense.

Expensive (comparatively) but Worth it, lock and lock storage and really useful boxes.
Liz earle face care,
Aveda hair care
Inexpensive and worth it, Palmers cocoa butter, paracetamol tablets and kenco coffee.

GasPanic · 26/02/2024 15:22

My rule of spending money is that it is worth spending money on stuff you use a lot. Stuff you don't use so much it is questionable whether it is worthwhile.

Dishwasher, sofa, TV, mattress is all stuff I would spend decent money on. Fridge is on all the time so that as well. Cooker not so much because I use airfryer a lot these days.

A couple of other things that are worth spending good money on, security products like locks. Cheap eurocylinder locks are easy to break and secure your house (or more likely don't secure it). The other I would say even if you do not use them a lot is cutting tools (think drills, knifes etc) because a good quality sharp blade makes the cutting/drilling process so much easier and so much more likely to succeed without making a horrible mess of the job and you.

I bought a vintage Japanese steel chopping knife in a thrift store in NY probably twenty years ago for 25c. I’d be lost without it. I have since scoured eBay and now have them in our caravan and our holiday home … travelling with a knife is not easy!

Londonrach1 · 26/02/2024 21:28

Rice cooker..use it three times a week..so easy. Love my sharp knife I got from a random French supermarket too.

this is getting a bit involved, buy yes of course you should keep curtains closed during the day when it's super hot. (I also have blackout curtains in key rooms) In hotter climes (lots hotter and more more often than Britain) they often have wooden blinds of course. Anyways, even with global warming I am wondering where these Brit frying pans are.

Remember this? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-62201793 I live in SE England and have a screenshot from July 2022 of the bbc weather app saying 37 degrees, followed by pictures of the thermometer in my bedroom saying 30 at 7pm and 29 at midnight. It was uncomfortable for weeks. I’m definitely looking into air con in our next house, I think it plus shading windows etc are a smart investment.

Stirling2701 · 27/02/2024 07:42

Gosh .... I wish I could afford all those things. Maybe if I win the Lottery???

BigSkies2022 · 27/02/2024 08:05

Ooh, have just thought of another one. In the spirit of spending bigger on stuff you use a lot, I think it worthwhile spending more on lovely light switches that you touch every day. So I have replaced the horrible white plastic switch plates and sockets in our house with flat Forbes and Lomax/Elesi ones. Also, upgraded the cheap, sticky plastic curtain rails to steel. Our vendors left beautiful Osborne & Little/William Morris curtains, but hadn't made a similar investment in the rails, so the curtains stuck and were a daily irritation. The steel rails and proper pulleys mean they swish and glide smoothly.

OolongTeaDrinker · 27/02/2024 13:47

Mine are:

Ninja Foodi
Ancient and Brave Collagen powder (my knees feel 10 years younger and my hair is longer and thicker than it has been for years)
Hunter snow boots for standing on the rugby field
Celtic and co slippers
Contigo travel mug
Vitamix blender
Sweaty Betty zero gravity leggings

I know these are all quite pricey but these are things we've got over the years that have lasted, for example we got the vitamix in 2011 and it is still going strong.

Hey can you tell me what's so good about the sweaty betty leggings I'm tempted as getting back into running but they're on the pricey side willing to invest if they're worth it. Also what's the sizing like?

ruthieness · 27/02/2024 17:32

On the knife front I found beautiful steak knives and use them for almost every meal as I enjoy cutting up food with them I eat smaller bites! More enjoyable food and
better for digestion!
so even scrambled egg on toast is eaten with a steak knife!

They are just really comfy, don’t ride down, and wash well. I love the pockets too. I only get them when they are on sale The sizing is pretty accurate. They do free returns if you need to get a couple of sizes to try.

ntmdino · 27/02/2024 22:38

The one thing I've spent a ton of cash on that's made the most difference to our lives? A really good 3D printer, because now we can make all the things I need to do those irritating little jobs around the house that we always have to compromise on with stuff that almost does the job, but not quite.

Think...a set of desktop drawers that's exactly the right size, monitor stands that don't get in the way, corner protectors, cup holders for the cars that actually hold at the right angle, repair brackets for drawers that have come apart, an extendable spice rack for the kitchen that isn't too wide or too small etc etc.

Cost me £600, and it's more than paid for itself in the last year or so through the sheer lack of mild annoyances.

Offeringalternative · 28/02/2024 05:39

Tempur Super King Size bed and mattress….. cost a fortune but it is just amazing, better than any hotel bed I’ve ever slept in and still feels so new and luxurious and it’s huge!
Hubby is 6ft 2” but we can both sleep without being woken by movements of the other - I guess essentially I’m saying there is so much room, you can cosy up as much as you want or can feel like you’re so far apart, you can forget they are in the same bed as you!

Heb1996 · 28/02/2024 05:53

@Whatistherightanswer a really good bed. We’ve always had decent beds but the Vi-Spring that we’ve got is the next level. It is absolutely heaven to sink into at the end of the day. Never any aches and pains after a night in it. Just bliss. Worth every penny of the vast amount spent on it.

LlamaDuke · 28/02/2024 06:02

One of those large heated airers with cover from Lakelands. Dries a full large load of wet washing quickly - my cats love it too, as they sleep under it and get really toasty!

AInightingale · 28/02/2024 06:32

My mum's place has underfloor heating and I do really envy how quickly a clothes horse full of washing dries. No need for a tumble drier at all.

DarlingCoffee · 28/02/2024 07:15

It’s a cliche but I love my Stanley Classic Iceflow bottle and use it every day when I’m working from home.

Also:

Robot Vacuum. Couldn’t be without it now.
Charlie Bigham ready meals.

Contigo auto westloop flask. Only that specific one. I've bought countless for gifts and years on people are still using them.

Isabel Marant Nessah cross body bag. It's ruined bags for me as it's perfect and all my other more expensive bags don't get used as much.

My kenwood chef is good as new 12 years on and I use it at least twice a week.

North Face parka. It's the largest kids size and along with the Contigo has made football practice and matches for DSs so much more bearable. It's warm, waterproof and good as new 6 years on.

I've just come back from skiing and hired the most amazing boots. I skiied for hours every day and not an ache or pain. And they are step in and out too. Started a savings pot on Revolut for them!

Could you tell me the brand/model of ski boots please?

Tilllly · 28/02/2024 07:35

JMSA · 24/02/2024 20:01

Coverless duvets. Only wish I'd bought them years ago.

What witchcraft is this?

BarrelOfOtters · 28/02/2024 07:35

Guy to cut hedges, including at my allotment. It’s about £300 that covers 2 cuts a year….but it would be hours of my time and exhausting.

cleaner once a week.

window cleaner.

bin cleaned.

handyman for stupid little jobs like putting up heavy mirrors etc…

robovac

we used to send dh’s work shirts to get ironed.
