I’ve inherited a very good knife and a little bit of money and I’ve used the knife today and it’s so sharp it’s life changing. It’s been a joy to chop everything and it’s made me wonder what I’m missing out on. What’s the thing you have that’s expensive but worth every penny?

@Hotpinkparade

They are Nordica rear entry HF75.

I'd always advise trying them by hiring them first.

sweary response seems a tad over the top on a domestic thing. But how the other half lives/poor planet - and yep I do wonder how many days you might "need" in britain. I have slept for weeks through southern europe virtually african nights with little real problem. Son is going to suffer when he leaves home I think.

@Offwiththecircus I honestly think it depends where in the UK you are. I'm on the breezy, fairly dry East Coast of Scotland and we won't be getting aircon - my DSis is in London and even if you only needed it a few weeks a year, it would probably make a big difference to your sleep and comfort... I've been in her home when it was 40° outside and there was no way to cool down except sit very still in the darkest room. Better house design/retrofitting so that houses passively stay the right temp is undoubtedly better and greener than aircon, but almost certainly still the more expensive choice for most of us.

Down pillows
Smart washer and dryer

Ooh, have just thought of another one. In the spirit of spending bigger on stuff you use a lot, I think it worthwhile spending more on lovely light switches that you touch every day. So I have replaced the horrible white plastic switch plates and sockets in our house with flat Forbes and Lomax/Elesi ones. Also, upgraded the cheap, sticky plastic curtain rails to steel. Our vendors left beautiful Osborne & Little/William Morris curtains, but hadn't made a similar investment in the rails, so the curtains stuck and were a daily irritation. The steel rails and proper pulleys mean they swish and glide smoothly.

@BigSkies2022 my husband has an ambition to replace all the switches in the house with his preferred brand - it's not designer, just a good build quality so it feels nicer to use. I would like to replace all the door-handles likewise, with ones that all match, suit the style of the doors (1930s, nothing fancy but original to the house) and don't have partially broken springs or mechanisms like half of the current ones. I'm mildly annoyed every day by the current ugly, shoogly ones!

This one! The hood kind of unfurled from being a cosy collar.
It is a good lenght, zips from the bottom upwards too and isn't quite as wide at the waist as some padded coats.

I was lucky enough to buy it at sale price last year.

Roof bars for our paddleboards so we don't have to keep pumping them up and taking them down when we go out, and we leave them inflated in the garage

wlv12 · 28/02/2024 11:57

A good quality mattress, pillows and lovely soft bedding.
I just love it!

JaneFarrier · 28/02/2024 12:04

For us:
Super-kingsize bed (tall husband, and I am a claustrophile and like to sleep halfway down it)

Kenwood mixer - wedding present, has been invaluable over the years

A good panini grill - also a wedding present but we use it almost every day and it's been going strong for 18 years.

Well-made pans we like using. Our stainless pot with two steamer baskets wasn't expensive, but it's like new, despite daily use.

As many Billy bookcases as we can practically fit in the house.

Our Sebo vacuum cleaner. Our rugs never looked so good before.

For me specifically: a neoprene laptop case, a portable laptop stand, a neat organiser bag for my charger and cables, a Kindle with a case and stand. For clothing: wool to make socks that custom-fit my feet, merino base layers that keep me warm in winter (I'm always cold), several pairs of my favourite cut of jeans (Lee's Marion) so they're never all in the wash, and comfy shoes. I scored some secondhand Natur Sko boots a little while ago on Marketplace and I would happily pay full price for more in future - my feet really like them. I also find it worth paying for real Birkenstocks as none of the similar brands support my feet as well.

Things I haven't bought but would consider: spring lawncare, a professional declutterer, repaving our back terrace.

Which veg chopper did you get? Thank you.
This is mine:

I think it's much the same one. My auntie actually bought it for me!

RosyappleA · 28/02/2024 12:09

Dehumidifier
airfryer
heated drying rack
clothes hangers with shelves for hallway
shark vacuum cleaner
soak and sleep microfibre pillows and 400tc sheets
expensive grill, paninis waffles burgers
‘waterproof’ tablecloths - no stains
squeegee for bathroom
scrubdaddy cleaning sponge
suction cups to hold shavers for bathroom
washable hallway rugs
fast drying bathroom mat

Had the best veg chopper from cookworks but it broke after years even had a soup blender attachment and electric whisk so I didn’t need a separate machine for this. I really miss it. Got an awful one on amazon which keeps missing bits like half a tomato despite £40. I even made kofte with it.

Anjo2011 · 28/02/2024 12:18

@ihatethecold , I’ve had mine since Christmas, change bed weekly and rotate the two. I wash and tumble on low and they are definitely softening up. I find the fitted sheets and pillowcases a good fit, no wrestling with the mattress when changing the bed. But yes, I agree the duvet cover is on the large side, we have a King bed. Inside the duvet cover there are two ribbons at the top, I thread this through the eyelets at the top of my actual duvet and tie it so it doesn’t slip down.

BuildingTrade · 28/02/2024 12:24

Separate clothes dryer for linen and towels especially, they are no longer taking over the house and making it damp every week.

9kg washing machine - saves time and can wash heavier stuff in it like duvet covers without going to a laundrette or sending them out.

Smart light bulbs - being able to dim or brighten or change colour at will without getting up has been great in the evenings when one is tired after a long day working.

Switching from a laptop to an iPad. So much faster, more portable, and I take it with me everywhere, I use it in the kitchen for recipes or timers or listening to podcasts… same having a bath or treatments in the bath.

Bean to cup coffee machine makes tons of different coffees at the touch of a button .

KaliforniaDreamz · 28/02/2024 12:38

Agree with PP re: Prima Donna bras. Last ages. Day to day one is the satin bra it looks very basic and isn't sexy but is so comfortable and if you hand wash will last years.

Also love my Quooker hot tap altho couldn't afford the sparkling bit too.

whoamI00 · 28/02/2024 12:45

Robot cleaner, Sage coffee machine and Le Creuset Cast Iron Casserole, I love them so much.

Kwasi · 28/02/2024 13:01

Heat pump dryer. I would give up my washing machine before I give up my dryer.

Walking boots that keep feet dry and warm all weathers - dog walking
Superking feather down duvet
Decent car after many cheap ones - now have a heated steering wheel which is bliss on sore cold fingers and the windscreen and back just magically de-ice almost at the touch of a button.

I'm with you on the heated steering wheel and magically de-icing windscreen. Love my new car.

RobinEllacotStrike · 28/02/2024 14:36

I feel super indulgent using top level kitchen wipes 😁

Madcats · 28/02/2024 15:12

Smart lightbulbs are great. Not sure about all brands but with Hue you can get a light-switch sized remote to switch groups of them on and off all at together (we have a lot of lamps). We've a big open-plan area and we hardly use traditional light switches now we have this fixed to the wall.

I've recently added a couple of Ninja zero stick frying pans to the kitchen as I am so fed up with the non-stick, err...sticking.

Slightly random qn, but has anybody managed to buy fitted sheets that don't shrink and come off a deep mattress if you sit reading in bed with a cuppa before work? I keep seeing adverts for ones with grippy elastic online, but they aren't cheap.

This!!! Best thing for myself I've ever done.

Also, a cleaner.

Nbobun · 28/02/2024 15:17

Top quality Japanese kitchen knives, Japanese (Niwaki) garden tools, and Japanese (Zojirushi) rice cooker.
Top quality blender (we have had a Vitamix for 9 years now, used almost daily, turns raw veg into piping hot soup, makes ice cream, dips, and many more).
Also got Zojirushi lunch box that keeps hot food really hot and it comes in tiers to fit different food items.

Quooker tap, we just had one fitted and it's a game changer.

Also recently got a large duel fuel hob and I won't have anything else now.

kikisparks · 28/02/2024 15:20

Robot vacuum that also mops the floor.

I love this thread
One of the things I always envy in other people's houses but doesn't seem to be mentioned on here is an American style fridge freezer with ice dispenser. I drink so much more water when it has ice in it but somehow the faff of opening the freezer, getting the ice cubes out & putting them back in the freezer is just too much hassle.
There's just no where in our kitchen (well, entire downstairs) to fit one in and re-modelling the entire house seems a bit excessive.

We inherited one with the house and although the ice and water feature is great, the freezer section isn't as big or wide as you think. You can't fit anything too wide in it.
I'd love to have one like the ones I saw in the US, where the freezer section are drawers across the whole width of the the fridge freezer, but it's not easy to find here.
