I’ve inherited a very good knife and a little bit of money and I’ve used the knife today and it’s so sharp it’s life changing. It’s been a joy to chop everything and it’s made me wonder what I’m missing out on. What’s the thing you have that’s expensive but worth every penny?

Jura E8! Does an amazing latte and bean to cup. No cheap nespresso pods for me. Cost about £1.2-3K, had it four years and make five lattes every day.

Amazing quality. I even take it on staycations with men

Eufy Eobovac, fab on our carpet less floors.

victorinoix small veg knives, built up a collection of about six over the years so there’s always one available when the others are in the dishwasher. DH sharpens them once in a blue moon. Particularly like the serrated one.

Dreamland heated blanket for the sofa
Waterproof coat that goes below my knees for dog walking
m&s thermal leggings which I have about six pairs now as I wear them almost every day it’s cold
thick pink ladies socks from Sport Direct to wear with above and slip on snow boots for dog walking

nimbot label maker (esp with cable labels)

a Halfords heated seat pad for my car. Probably one of the best birthday presents I ever got. I did have to use extra elastic to make it fit.

self cleaning oven.

off to look for wellies and food choppers. Thanks everyone 💐

BigSkies I share your love of Ercol.. especially the vintage pieces.

A Gardner, so much easier in the summer months to not have to worry about cutting the grass all the time

if I had the money I would also have a cleaner and a laundry person

I love this thread
One of the things I always envy in other people's houses but doesn't seem to be mentioned on here is an American style fridge freezer with ice dispenser. I drink so much more water when it has ice in it but somehow the faff of opening the freezer, getting the ice cubes out & putting them back in the freezer is just too much hassle.
There's just no where in our kitchen (well, entire downstairs) to fit one in and re-modelling the entire house seems a bit excessive.

You can buy little worktop ice dispensers- never used one but maybe worth a try?

I expect this is a bit odd but the thing that costs me the most ( in terms of hard work and going without day to day luxuries ) is my financial independence. To not rely on someone else ( also to be vulnerable to abuse and exploitation linked to this) is priceless to me. I have seen too much to value anything more.

pontipinemum · 28/02/2024 09:10

@Sickoffamilydrama thank you, my mam has been on about needing a good travel mug for her coffee for driving to work. I think I'll get her one of those for Mothers day

pontipinemum · 28/02/2024 09:13

I bought a ninja 15 in 1 pressure cooker before DS was born. It is pricey but excellent I had a few cheaper ones over the years and they don't compare.

I was able to still do reasonably healthy and varied meals. Best thing it shuts itself off so if you get trapped feeding/ changing it doesn't keep going. Just make sure to turn the 'keep warm' function off for pasta dishes!

Anjo2011 · 28/02/2024 09:16

Linen Bedding from Piglet in Bed. I resisted for a while and then bought two sets, it was pricey but worth it. A worthwhile splurge.

Abbyant · 28/02/2024 09:41

A robot vacuum absolute sanity saver with two young children, packet of crisps all over the floor not a problem turn on the little guy and it’s gone. I now only vacuum once a week and that’s only to do inside and under the sofa.

i recently bought a duvet set from PIB. I have washed it loads to soften it (used white vinegar) its still not as soft as i would like. I also find the duvet cover is too large for the SK sized duvet i have.

Have you found this at all?

Please link to the electric veg chopper, sounds thrilling and terrifying in one go!

Not sure if it's same as mine, but I've got a chopper and grinder which is electric. Can just whack an onion in there and it chops it in no time.

My mum's place has underfloor heating and I do really envy how quickly a clothes horse full of washing dries. No need for a tumble drier at all.

I don't have underfloor heating but do have an iron stove for wood etc (smokeless fuel) as well as radiators and a Victorian drying rack. DM has much the same set up in her much larger house.

DB and SIL are always staggered at how quickly everything takes to dry at both our places without a tumble drier. They recently replaced their washing machine with a washer/drier. Clothes took forever to dry in a 2 bedroom flat and an clothes horse.

It too have the contingo mug it keeps drinks so hot I often have to take the top of and let it cool a bit before drinking.

Best thing about it was it was free got given it as a promotion 😁

Must look into this mug. I got a new Costa plastic travel mug the other day, partly for the convenience!

My 4 Wheel Rollator! As someone with physical disabilities it gives me the freedom to walk while clinging onto the handles so less chance of falling over! £166.66 well spent! Foldable, brakes, seat, under-seat basket and a zipped under-seat compartment.

I call it my horse which makes my hubby laugh! He'll ask ''is your horse taking you for a ride today?!''

mefornow · 28/02/2024 10:03

Don’t mean to hijac the thread but all those saying robovac…. Are they ok on tiled floors and which ones do people have? Home with a mix of tiled and carpet floors with a 7year old and a dog looking for an easy life…..

Boiling water tap

Thank fuck.. my 3k tap (boiling and fizzy) is being installed the week after next, but I keep worrying it's not going to be 3k of life-changing tap...

I would have said Hello Fresh, but I got sick of baked cubes of potato and cancelled it.

So for me, it's buying a car, and getting all the extras like heated seats/steeringwheel/windscreen with remote start. It makes 6 months of the year, turfing out in the cold and dark to get the kids to school almost tolerable.

borntobequiet · 28/02/2024 10:04

I have fairly cheap but reasonable quality knives, and a knife sharpener. That does the trick.
I pay more for good coffee, butter and nice bread. These makes every day a better day.

ICanSeeMyHouseFromHere · 28/02/2024 10:08

For knives, I just have the ikea all metal ones (and a nice sabatier, and my youngest has some japanese one he loves), and the ikea sharpener, and I can slice tomatoes with no effort - knives don't have to be expensive, you just need a sharpener (never got on with a steel - need the ones you drag it through)

TerfTalking · 28/02/2024 10:12

I 3rd (2 other posters have said it) the Hive. The bliss of controlling your heating from nowhere near the thermostat is awesome.

Away from home and there's an unexpected frosty spell? no problem, put the heating on for the cats!

Woke up and the heating has come on too high but CBA getting up yet? no problem turn it down from your phone.

Stuck away from home unexpectedly and you want to put a lamp on to look like some's home? easy.

Love it.

Ilovemyshed · 24/02/2024 20:22

@pandachoochop. Even Fords have heated steering wheels now you know - higher spec models.

I’ve just ordered a new car and it has a heated steering wheel - 2
different heat levels!

SausageRoll58 · 28/02/2024 10:15

AWWWWWW! I'm soooo in love with that gorgeous pup! X

Pnlolly · 28/02/2024 10:25

I have a fairly cheap car- a Corsa! Bought in 2015. And it has all the luxuries... heated steering wheel, heated seats etc. Doesn't have to be a Range Rover for all the goodies. I'd never be without the 'extras' now.

Sdpbody · 28/02/2024 10:26

I spend £50 on a hairbrush back in 2003. I had saved my pocket money, but my dad went mad and said what a waste it was.

Well, it celebrated its 20 anniversary of brushing my hair last year, and it still has all the bristles.

Same with the GHD's. I bought them in 2005 for £120. Well, I use them every day and they still do a great job.
