To be angry that Scarlet Blake is being called a woman.

Scarlet Blake has been found guilty of murder. He also tortured and killed a cat.

He is not a woman.

This shouldn't be reported as a woman's crime.

@ChimChimeny they haven't replied to me yet, but that statement is on their website complaints page so I guess everyone will get the same.

pickledandpuzzled · 02/03/2024 11:21

They can’t keep stats on how many men are in the women’s estate. Or indeed how many women are in the women’s estate, or vice versa. Because…. Woman and Man no longer have meaning. Stats can no longer be trusted.

Froodwithatowel · 02/03/2024 13:47

Witness the huge fuck up of the census data, done to pat the egos of a tiny number of noisy people from the TQ+ political lobby, and which has rendered a lot of it bloody useless.

No one yet has come up with exactly what it cost to run that data collection farce, but the cost was huge. And they did it with the full knowledge that it would create fictional data that would have no use beyond making people who do not like reality feel happy filling out the forms.

Panicmode1 · 02/03/2024 17:16

Re the BBC response - I've had a different reply...I commented on how I no longer trust them and their journalistic integrity, particularly as the Scarlett Blake story came on the back of the male milk being safe....and I've had a reply to say they are still waiting for the right people to reply.

I will be interested to see whether I get anything different to the stock response here.

DuesToTheDirt · 02/03/2024 17:20

@Panicmode1 I just got my reply too, sounds similar to yours - "we have referred your complaint to the relevant people and are still looking into it". I wonder who these "relevant people" are.

Panicmode1 · 02/03/2024 17:21

@DuesToTheDirt Yes, exactly...I wonder what we will get back!

DuesToTheDirt · 02/03/2024 18:06

@Panicmode1 I wonder if we wrote something slightly different from people who got the other response, or whether as time goes on the pressure is mounting for them to come up with something better.

Panicmode1 · 02/03/2024 18:09

I wrote about the wider capture of a previously trusted institution, that is now allowing its journalists to lie, and does not challenge unscientific assertions.

I said that if it wasn't for Wimbledon and the Olympics, I would be cancelling my licence fee.

That's interesting. I wrote about the least eloquent complaint I've ever bothered to make - just managed not to swear ... and not heard back.

@ArabellaScott yes I had to refrain from swearing!

@Panicmode1 This was mine. I don't suppose it was much different from most of the others.

YOUR COMPLAINT:

Describing a sadistic, murdering man as a woman

Scarlet Blake is not a woman. He is a man. A man, a man, a man. Buried in the article it mentions that he is transgender, but the whole article is written as though he were a woman.

He is a sadistic individual who tortured a cat and went on to search for a human victim, overpowering and murdering another man, a complete stranger - this is absolutely not a woman's crime, and I find it very offensive that it is reported as such.

Here www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-67520731 we even have it in the headline, "Oxford woman denies murder..." with no a mention that this person is actually a man.

Language is important, and the BBC should know better than to lie to us over this.

ArabellaScott · 02/03/2024 18:36

Hmmm. Just got this:

'We wanted to let you know that we have referred your complaint to the relevant people and are still looking into it. We regret that it may take a little bit longer before we can reply. Please wait to hear from us before you contact us any further – we appreciate your patience.

I suspect journalists are bound by the law which is why they're waiting for people to respond. If the court refers to Blake as a woman that's what the media have to do too.

I get that the ex police chap on here was trying to be helpful. Went about it the wrong way though...

QuirkyKhakiCat · 11/03/2024 17:26

Hi, this is my reply from the BBC:

Thank you for writing in - we note your concerns about our reporting of Scarlet Blake’s conviction.

Scarlet Blake was tried as a woman and the pronoun ‘she’ was used throughout.

BBC reporting in this area follows the publicly available BBC News style guide. It says: “We generally use the term and pronoun preferred by the person in question, unless there are editorial reasons not to do so.” In this case, we considered it editorially appropriate to include the fact that Blake is a transgender woman and did so across our output. We accept that should have been included in the report on the News at One on 26 February.

We greatly value audience feedback - complaints are added to our overnight reports and widely circulated. This issue has also been raised directly with senior editors in News.

This is our response at Stage 1a of the BBC’s complaints process. If you’re dissatisfied with this reply, a follow-up complaint may be considered at Stage 1b. You must submit a follow-up within 20 working days through the BBC Complaints webform. If you do decide to contact us again, please include your case number, and explain why you feel your complaint has not been addressed. We will then review your complaint.

Thank you again for getting in touch.

What do people think?
is there any validity in complaining further. I’m not sure what “ editorial reasons” are but would have thought luring someone to their death while presenting as a woman when you are actually a man would be relevant. Also the BBCs total lack of concern about misrepresentation of criminality based on sex is concerning to me

DuesToTheDirt · 11/03/2024 17:32

I just got the same (I started another thread). I think it's worth taking further, and I'm mulling over my response. It's not just that women are pissed off (they don't seem to care about that, who cares what women think?) - a lot of people were substantially misled by their reporting, and that is surely not acceptable even in BBC-land.

Panicmode1 · 11/03/2024 17:33

I had the same and have sent a strongly worded additional complaint - partly because when I complained about the Scarlet Blake coverage being deliberately obfuscatory, I said that ALL of their coverage relating to stories around trans people are hugely biased (I cited the 'male milk' story which it transpired was based on one participant....) and they didn't address that at all.

So I've written again with examples of stories from the past couple of days that have not been balanced (eg Hampstead Heath ponds, Justin Webb being sanctioned or ignored completely - they haven't even MENTIONED the WPATH files) and asked them to address why their news coverage is inaccurate and panders to activists, not the unbiased or balanced coverage that the national broadcaster should aim to provide.

I'm sure it's falling on deaf ears but it's made me feel better for writing again.

ArabellaScott · 11/03/2024 20:34

I got the same. And its more conciliatory and respectful than I've had in the past. I will definitely escalate, and encourage others to do the same.

It'll have to go to Stage 2 before we can Ofcom it.

I'm surprised there weren't more complaints.

Panicmode1 · 20/03/2024 16:24

Does seem low @WandaWomblesaurus - I'm still waiting for my Stage 2 complaint to get a response.

Baroness Nicholson has tweeted a letter she has written to Ofcom about it.

Panicmode1 · 25/03/2024 15:28

Have just had an email to say my Stage 2 complaint will take a bit longer than usual to get a response due to a high volume of complaints.....

Froodwithatowel · 25/03/2024 16:31

Ah. So the 'just a handful' comment was a lie then? Oh what a surprise.

QuirkyKhakiCat · 25/03/2024 16:46

So I know this thread might be a bit old now but I am still cross about it. As a subscriber to the women’s rights network I was motivated to escalate my BBC complaint to level two after reading the letter sent in about how BBC handles issues of gender and women’s rights more generally. I will see what happens.
you know the sad thing- my 18 year old son says I’m brave just for sticking my head this tiny bit above the parapet.
He feels in his college if he even slightly hinted at the view that trans women weren’t “real women” he’d be thrown out or cancelled.
