Yet another one .... rapist ..before He even joined the force. WTAF is going on ?
You can't trust the very people that you are supposed to ! Add to that the failings of the police "force" dealing with Grace and Barnaby case recently and the awful disrespectful texts that we heard about .... and you just think what de hell is going on !! Unforgivable!

Are you saying that unless you're prepared to join the Police you have no right in complaining about them?
So me at 61 and my disabled DD should just put up and shut up?

No - she wasn't talking about you, Poppet.

It was a general point saying that decent people of working age could join up and change things from the inside.

The point was clumsy and defensive, but I don't think you personally were the intended target.

Can we not be tarring all officers with the one brush please!!! Some of us spent 30 years treating people with dignity, fairness and respect. Some of us ran into danger when those have run from it and have the battle wounds, including stab/slice marks. Please be specific and remember one size does not fit all

Fair enough.

Some of us were married to police officers. Some of us were violently assaulted by those officers. Some of us have seen their colleagues ignore the DV. Some of us then became victims of attempts on our lives by police officers. And some of us also have scars after being attacked.

80% of officers accused of DV keep their jobs.

Ialwaystry · 23/02/2024 01:33

Not sure you should be showing that kind of evidence...
Damned whatever

I’ve had positive experiences with police but understand there is a lot of corruption, sexism etc.

My eyes were opened a bit wider from watching that documentary on the police unit that investigates police officers, the first episode with the woman going through the mental health crisis and the way the female officer was treating her was absolutely horrific, just the grabbing of her hair was bad but the rest of it had me on the verge of tears.

Ostagazuzulum · 23/02/2024 05:28

sprigatito · 22/02/2024 20:01

Rates of domestic violence and sexual offending have always been sky high in the police force. The whole institution is rotten to the bone. I wouldn't call the police if I needed help as a lone woman, nor would I let them in if they came to my door. I don't trust them.

I'm curious - What does everyone think needs to be done to improve things?

Statements like this need to be made constructive.

How do they improve?

I think someone suggested getting rid of police which just can't and won't happen. If that shopkeeper has armed people in his store trying to rob him, who does he call? If there is a man with a knife running along street jumping on cars threatening people, who do they call? We can't just ignore them and hope they go away.

So it's fine to have an opinion and say how poor you think police are but maybe back it up with a realistic idea of what should be done to improve it.

VashtaNerada · 23/02/2024 05:39

Behind every story of a police officer committing a crime is a team of police officers who worked tirelessly to stop them and bring them to justice. There are some absolutely disgusting people in the police but there are also many decent human beings trying to do their best in a broken system. Experienced officers have been managed out (or quit) so we now have far too many inexperienced officers with huge caseloads and not enough oversight / support. Underfunding across the public sector has fucked us all over, including the police.

@ticktickticktickBOOM female officers aren't any better

Unfortunately this is true. I know an ex-policeman. He was a closeted gay at the time (out now). He didn’t stay very long due to witnessing too much troubling behaviour from fellow officers.

He said one of the worst was a female who would target young black females who were just walking down the street, provoke them until they got wound up, then arrest them.

He made complaints, but she always got away with it, and is probably still in the Met. Disgusting behaviour.

I’m hopeful that most people who join the police, do it for positive reasons. Unfortunately though, there will always be a significant percentage attracted to the role because they’re power hungry bullies.

PeridotSparkle · 23/02/2024 06:34

When you consider what police have to do, it's not really surprising it attracts some odd types.

The culture definitely needs to change.

I am surprised it’s ok for police to post photos like this online. I would never dare to post pics from my NHS job due to governance and probity etc. I thought that ethos was meant to be public sector-wide.

FatPrincess · 22/02/2024 21:56

I will be insisting on female officers if I ever need their assistance.

Hmm, I remember the footage of that crying autistic girl being arrested by a female copper for having said something online which wasn't actually meant to be offensive (said somebody "was a lesbian like Auntie Jo" or whatever the name was, and was clearly just making a factual statement).

Poor girl was cowering in the closet under the stairs crying and the female officer looked so smug arresting her.

What? They can arrest a poor girl for saying something online but they can't be arsed to arrest even with cctv footage a scammer that stole things from your home and told hist to go through insurance ? Fucking disgraceful where the focus lies

I've had enough. Not if the job I love and do to the absolute best of my ability. But if these threads . I ready to call it a day . Knowing how badly I'm thought of when I am the one who stands in the way of a gunman shooting at cars and threatening me with that massive fuck of machete , axe , and zombie knife .

Maybe Mumsnet knows better . They can have a go . I'm putting in for retirement. I've absolutely had enough.

Why is your anger not directed at those who hire these thugs ,the public are terrified of the police they have so much power . Name me another profession that can insist they have to come in and talk to you . They take advantage of their power .

Iwasafool · 23/02/2024 08:53

Noangelbuthavingfun · 22/02/2024 21:48

2 years before he was hired there was a rape allegation and he still sailed through

So he could be blameless? People do make false allegations. At a local school a teacher with nearly 40 years experience was suspended because a 10 or 11 year old girl made allegations that he had touched her inappropriately. Other kids in her class said he'd told her off about something and she'd said she was going to get him. He was suspended for months, completely exonerated and still some local people were doing the "no smoke without fire" spiel. The man took early retirement as his mental health was wrecked but you know there was an allegation so that's OK isn't it.

Iwasafool · 23/02/2024 09:01

PaintInColour · 22/02/2024 23:36

What a ridiculous and immature response to the OP.

I think nurses and doctors are far more likely to get away with killing you. They know how to cover their tracks, how many vulnerable people have been "helped on their way" by a HCP with a God complex?

I was sexually abused by my GP when I was about 11 or 12. My mother was in the room but he very carefully arranged the curtain so she didn't have a good view and I was too scared to say or do anything. I didn't even understand what he'd done.

Naunet · 23/02/2024 09:08

TheChippendenSpook · 22/02/2024 19:05

Maybe we need a slag off the police topic, as there is a thread doing just that at least once a week 🙄

Maybe if there wasn’t yet another rapist or abusive cop outed every week, there wouldn’t be threads moaning about them. They can change it, it’s not women’s job to stop talking about it.

Devilshands · 23/02/2024 09:10

QuestionableMouse · 22/02/2024 18:54

Female officers haven't raped and murdered women either.

That you know of.

Let’s not pretend being female makes someone better. Women are just as capable of rape and murder (statistics might be in their favour) but women can still rape and murder.

IME female officers are more likely to be unpleasant. Lesbian nana is a prime example of that. Male officers reasonable and the woman being a muppet.

The police (anywhere) and regardless of sex are all bloody crap.

YouJustDoYou · 23/02/2024 09:14

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/02/2024 19:28

If we could have a week without reports coming out of yet another one raping, murdering or otherwise abusing women, sending racist and/or misogynistic items to a works/family and friends Whatsapp, ignoring the pleas for help from people (usually women) who then end up dead - or deliberately covering all of those up, that would be nice.

Would be nice, wouldn't it? Sadly, so many dodgy men get off on the power trip that comes with being police.

Naunet · 23/02/2024 09:15

TheChippendenSpook · 22/02/2024 20:17

I know, it's really sad. The last time I went onto a thread about how awful/corrupt/power mad, the police are, somebody actually replied to my post and said, ' I was waiting for you to show up on here and defend them!'

I've kept myself quiet since then but it annoys me so much. You even get people saying 'but nurses and Drs who murder people aren't as bad as the police.' I'm sorry but what??? It's just wrong.

Edited

Are you a police officer? If so can you explain why you think it’s appropriate for a police officer to want to silence women from talking about the awful amount of rapists and abusers being exposed in the police? Do you wish you could cover it up for some reason? Are we meant to turn a blind eye to the bad, because some are good and we should just be grateful for that? You realise we pay for the police, yes? So why can’t we have a say?

If you are in the police and this is your attitude, YOU are part of the problem.

Yes women can be awful too, but don’t pretend they’re committing sex crimes at anywhere close to the level of men. The lesbian nana woman is fucking awful, but in no way is it on the same level as this guy who has just been exposed for repeated rapes. Women and men ARE different.

BluebellsareBlue · 23/02/2024 09:20

@damnedwhatever you're welcome x I'm retired now and have the ptsd to go with it sadly but I wouldn't change a thing.

I'll always have the battle scars, I'll always have the PTSD waking up in the night to hear screaming from numerous fatal RTA's but I also have an immense feeling that I made a positive difference in peoples lives. I've had a baby named after me and was asked to be godparent to four others (although had to decline).

One victim from 1997 still keeps in touch with me and is now a doctor and she says she thanks me every day in her mind as she wouldn't be there if I didn't have the tenacity to keep probing and get her out of the situation she was in, she says she'd be dead.

I'm proud of the good I did and you should be too xx

Your anger is misplaced. It should be directed at the institution you work for that isn't fit for purpose and hasn't been for years.

The type of incidents you mention do occur, of course they do and nobody would deny that it takes great bravery to deal with them. But what the public want - and are fully entitled to expect because the police are public servants - is that they also deal with the day-to-day concerns of ordinary people and don't either fob them off/take no action because they can't be arsed (and yes, some of us do have friends/family currently or previously in The Job so we know it happens), turn into aggressive bullies without provocation, make a half-hearted attempt to do something or take to social media to circulate their friends with case details that their perverted humour considers 'funny'.

This is a job that carries power - and the fact that it might attract a certain number of those who want to be able to practice licensed thuggery is hardly rocket science, although it seems beyond the wit of the police Top Brass to work out. Perhaps that's the trouble - too many theorists at the top level, too few with any real experience of life and people?

The public would also prefer that the police do not recruit criminals to the job and seemingly look the other way at racism, rapists, thugs and bullies in their ranks. Impossible dream?

SheepAndSword · 23/02/2024 09:25

Back in 2013 a woman phoned the police after an assault then the policeman who turned up tried it on with her.

I said to complain and she said she had no faith in the police, turns out she was quite prescient (not to say all police are like that, there are some good ones, but problems are more widespread than I'd known).

It's pretty scary.

I agree. I am 56 & was brought up to trust the Police (my parents even wanted me to join the MET!). I've had 3 personal interactions 2 re CSA & 1 re DV & all made things worse for me. I would never trust the Police an I ch again. I have 2 Autistic teens who, despite them carrying NAS 'ASD' cards are wary of the Police & rightly so imo.

LakieLady · 23/02/2024 09:30

I wonder if the culture varies much between forces?

I live in a (mostly) rural county, and have had quite a lot of dealings with the police, mostly professionally, but also personally. I have always found the police here to be respectful, reasonable and supportive.

Completely different from when I lived in London, and had to deal with the Met.

I made a point of saying in my post that women are awful but statically not as bad as men...not sure you read my post properly.
