Yet another one .... rapist ..before He even joined the force. WTAF is going on ?
You can't trust the very people that you are supposed to ! Add to that the failings of the police "force" dealing with Grace and Barnaby case recently and the awful disrespectful texts that we heard about .... and you just think what de hell is going on !! Unforgivable!

The nurses and doctors comparison just doesn't hold up. The HCPs aren't state sanctioned enactors of violence. Not too long ago the armed officers whatever that unit is called apparently handed in their guns in protest against one of their own being held accountable for the murder of Chris Kaba. Imagine getting all het up because you won't be allowed to shoot anyone without impunity. If water is wet don't say it's dry.

Sussurations · 22/02/2024 19:32

It’s the covering up, excuses, minimisation and the culture of defensiveness that makes the whole organisation seem untrustworthy. The top brass should have the courage to take a good hard look at it. The last thing any police force needs is to lose public confidence.

CranfordScones · 22/02/2024 19:35

Perhaps the uniform brings out the worst in some people, but I think the bigger factor is the potential for having power over people attracts wrong'uns. My understanding is that the recruitment process does nothing to screen out those people - if anything it prefers the overconfident, authoritarian types.

I've dealt with some lovely officers and some who I had real doubts about.

IncompleteSenten · 22/02/2024 19:36

Nothing will ever change if people refuse to see there's a huge problem.

It's all very "I see no ships".

There's a problem at an institutional level and we should be talking about it.

FindingMeno · 22/02/2024 19:43

There has been a problem with the police for decades unfortunately.
I do my utmost to avoid any interaction with the police. I don't trust them and don't like them.

DivergentTris · 22/02/2024 19:44

The police are the public and the public are the police.

They aren't infallible, recruitment and vetting only go so far.
Many say they they will challenge bad behaviour but very few do. People lie about what they are really like. This is human nature even before many of us do really bad things. We are all flawed and won't become perfect by becoming a copper.

This is people for you. All of us.
The police and their systems are reflective of the society they serve.

It is shit I can't dispute it BUT only actions will count. Become one of the ones that give a damn and make a stand against the bad ones.

There has been a massive shift in police officers standing up and calling out behaviour amongst their colleagues that is inappropriate but I'm wasting my breath on here. According to a lot of Mumsnetters, they're all as bad as each other and only sign up for the 'power.'

There are thousands of good officers that find the behaviour reported in the media abhorrent. Those officers are trying to do an often impossible job and are just as sick of the 'bad apples' amongst them, as the public are.

Noangelbuthavingfun · 22/02/2024 19:22

This is exactly what I've been thinking of late...obviously there will be lovely officers, but I do think what you state is true. In that case though why don't they do more rigorous testing like psychometrics etc and background checks to chsnge the culture!

It’s interesting you say that. My father was a police officer in the 60s, constable then sergeant just for a couple of years before he left. I was just a kid but I can remember my mother moaning about the forms they had to fill in before we moved house. They were going to do background checks on our new neighbours before we’d be allowed to move. Apparently this was standard back then. If they did this just to check the neighbourhood a lowly sergeant would move into they must have been far more vigorous with recruits.

There was though a very “black humour” culture I remember between police officers.

Yet another person completely failing to remember Ian Coates who was also murdered by Valdo Calocane in Nottingham.

Are you saying that unless you're prepared to join the Police you have no right in complaining about them?
So me at 61 and my disabled DD should just put up and shut up?

I do agree with you. I kept my post as safe as I could to prevent a witch hunt against myself.

sprigatito · 22/02/2024 20:01

Rates of domestic violence and sexual offending have always been sky high in the police force. The whole institution is rotten to the bone. I wouldn't call the police if I needed help as a lone woman, nor would I let them in if they came to my door. I don't trust them.

I missed that post! Thank you for highlighting Ian.

@baileybrosbuildingandloan

I like to use a bit of logic sometimes, if you can yes, if can't, support those who could make the difference.

lemmefinish · 22/02/2024 20:07

It looks like they are so desperate to recruit

I would not want to be a police officer!

I know, it's really sad. The last time I went onto a thread about how awful/corrupt/power mad, the police are, somebody actually replied to my post and said, ' I was waiting for you to show up on here and defend them!'

I've kept myself quiet since then but it annoys me so much. You even get people saying 'but nurses and Drs who murder people aren't as bad as the police.' I'm sorry but what??? It's just wrong.

Daphnis156 · 22/02/2024 20:25

There is little respect for the police, and that is entirely their own fault.

DinnaeFashYersel · 22/02/2024 20:32

It's not just the police.

NHS, Fire Brigade, Ambulance Service, Armed Services, CBI the list goes on.

Historically male dominated organisations snd professions with deeply embedded misogynist cultures.

PieOMy · 22/02/2024 20:36

I've only ever known 3 police officers in my personal life.

One was my cousins ex husband, he used to hit her.

One I dated, he ended up being an aggressive alcoholic, the last time I saw him he smashed my phone and tried to lock me in his house when I tried to break up with him.

The last, a female I knew from school, lost her job for attempting to smuggle out confiscated class A drugs that had been removed from an arrested dealer.

MenArePeopleToo · 22/02/2024 20:38

I'm female police officer and these threads really hurt me and affect me.

Doesn't the fact that your profession is riddled with corruption, misogyny and violence upset you? It should. People having a dialogue about it isn't the problem.

The idea that they need others to join up to make a change , no thanks they are a public service and there is plenty of them to sort it out and stop employing thugs , they did this to themselves .

The police force are currently a national disgrace. I believe it is way too male dominated.

I will be insisting on female officers if I ever need their assistance.

How can you insist on female officers ,they send who.is available ?

It's not my experience of it, I work my bum off everyday because I love what I do and the people I'm surrounded by are lovely. I do exceptionally well for myself in my career and I will always try my best in what I do. I know a lot of people who have a lot of heavy opinions and have never worked for the police in any capacity, it's difficult not to disagree when your lived experienced for over a decade is extremely different. I'm not denying anything people hear about in the news but I wonder where this same energy is for other professions where abhorrent crimes are committed.
