To have asked man to stop helping?

Trying to park in a space today and a man started trying to help by waving me forward and then stopping me. But I found I was looking at him not the parking space and I asked him if he’d mind stopping because I was fine myself. He and his wife got really huffy! Surely I wasn’t unreasonable?

Sisters and mums helping are totally different from strangers. That is always men.

They're not, it's still incredibly fucking annoying. Besides, my mum tries to help strangers back into spaces too, she thinks she's a wonderful help to all drivers. I think she does it in the hope she can say 'I told you so' if they bump into something. She hasn't once in more than 50 years of driving backed into a parking space herself, but she knows exactly how other people should be doing it.

NOBODY is assuming ANYONE can't drive! That's just an inferiority complex. It's literally someone just trying to help, nothing more.

MANY men are assuming WOMEN can't drive, if you bother to read the thread. You are oddly defensive.

ClumsyNinja · 22/02/2024 16:42

@PeggyPoggleshaw

Are you a man in a dress? You certainly sound like one. 🤦🏻‍♀️

That's because men are more willing to help someone.

Had my FIL in passenger seat one day. Got to T junction, he leaned right forward, looked left and said "clear left". Without thinking, I put out my left arm, pushed him quite hard back into his seat and leaned forward to look for myself. He was somewhat taken aback🤣 I explained that I wouldn't want him to feel responsible if I'd had an accident inside I was swearing at him for his interference He never did that again!
If anyone tries to help me into/out of a space without being asked, I tend to sit stationary until they take the hint.

Wow!! What an extremely rude and disrespectful way to treat your FIL.

SpeedyDrama · 22/02/2024 16:44

Just after I passed my test, I was trying to parallel park outside my house, and That Bloke appeared (I swear they’re cloned and hidden under drains to pop out at opportune moments). I had gone from my instructor’s fancy arse, brand new, fully modded VW to driving a tin can, and there he was waving his arms like I was trying to land a Boeing on a one lane cycle track. After two minutes of me getting more panicked, trying to wave him off without seeming rude, he knocked on my window and asked if he wanted me to let him park it. I almost parked it up his arse I won’t lie. Think I mumbled something about not enough space and drove off - these days I’d happily say ‘fuck off’.

Allfur · 22/02/2024 16:45

Peggypoggle, your language is completely sexist, are you OK?

Not sexist. Refers to women as ‘bitches’. Something contradictory going on here.

shearwater2 · 22/02/2024 16:46

Yeah I hate that. And they always stand in the wrong place, often where you are actually trying to go, to park or turn.

My car comes with mirrors, cameras and parking assistance. It even parks itself. I think next time it happens I'll get out completely and just press the button on the key to really freak him out.

Not defensive, just someone who despises sexism in BOTH ways. And I have read the whole thread, hence my replies.

Did I refer to all women as bitches? Do I refer to all men as bastards? No, I don't, even though a lot of them are.

"Trying to park in a space today and a man started trying to help"

The OP was clearly having a bit of difficulty before the man got involved.

Nothing "clearly" about it. It's "trying" because she hadn't completed the process yet due to random wanker turning up to get in the way and patronize her. How come you're working so hard to establish your narrative of the feeble helpless lady?

Did I say ‘all women’? Referring to women (any woman, not just as a collective) as ‘ungrateful bitches’ because they/we are once again fed up of some men feeling they can ‘insert their help/opinions/existence’ where is was never asked for does not make any woman ungrateful and certainly not whatever misogynistic insulting word springs to mind.

Trulyme · 22/02/2024 16:53

YABU he was literally just trying to help.

This is why no one bothers helping anyone anymore.

You were obviously having difficulty parking if him waving put you off and so he was trying to be kind.

I would have just ignored him and parked as usual and then thanked him afterwards for trying to help.

Lilyhatesjaz · 22/02/2024 16:54

My Dad used to do this. when I visited my parents I had to reverse up a steep hill by a wall to park. I liked to go a bit further than I needed and pull forward into the space, he would insist on standing behind me to see me back, making it much more difficult to park.

Spot on. I hate what society has become. 👏

Allfur · 22/02/2024 16:56

Not sure Peggy understands what the word sexist means , just like you can't be a bit racist, you are or you're not

TomeTome · 22/02/2024 16:56

Men do this fairly regularly to me as a drive quite a large van. I don’t think a woman ever has. They are utter pains in the arse and have little or no understanding that standing in your blind spot or covering your view IS what’s holding you up. Tedious.
