to be fed up with homophobia on MN

today there was the thread about being 'uncomfortable' with a secondary school telling kids it's OK to be gay. a short while ago there was a post about someone being freaked out by two women kissing on a bus.

calling it being 'uncomfortable' is still homophobia. we wouldn't tolerate racism on here - imagine "i'm concerned that my DC's school wants to say it's OK to be black". the OP would be rightly slammed, but instead the queers on MN have to put up with people defending bigotry saying that people are entitled to have a POV etc.

Freedom of speech does not include the right to victimise and marginalise others for their race, religion, sexuality, age or other irrelevant attributes. I don't think its unreasonable to want MN to be a safe space where we don't have to deal with homophobia.

OP posts:

I hadn't seen that bus thread before but it shocked me because I don't get to hear homophobia expressed so boldly these days.

I think yorkshirepudding & morningpaper are right that it's good for people reading that thread to see how little sympathy they will get.

I was also a bit surprised at the dislike of ANY kissing in public. How it can be seen as gross or yucky I don't know.

Just for the record, without doubt the most homophobic person I had any contact with as a child was my own father, I never agreed and we used to have huge rows about his attitude and the fact he was indoctrinating my brothers into his 'anti-gay' ways.

Needless to say my father is in fact gay and now lives with another man

saying "queers" is hardly friendly.

3NAB · 24/03/2008 14:25

Wisteria - that is quite common.

Fear turned into hatred of being something you feel is wrong perhaps?

Judy1234 · 24/03/2008 14:27

My daughter have boyfriends and my older son lots of girlie posters so they probably aren't gay but the little ones could be and I don't mind. What I would like is grandchildren but they even know how gay people of either gender can have children so I hope even that would not preclude them from being parents.

Wisteria · 24/03/2008 14:33

I know Nab - I started suspecting when I was 12 so it was no surprise to me or my mother

pagwatch · 24/03/2008 14:36

I'm not a prude - honest but I personally have an issue witrh some publis snogging. Couple of any hue snogging in a park or even at a bus stop or somewhere with a bit of personal space = really sweet and quite nice.
The two people snogging behind me in Costas the other day so noisily crunchy and spittle laden that I needed ear plugs and a squeegy with my order = yeuk

pagwatch · 24/03/2008 14:36

publis snogging ?. Sounds quite rude

Upwind · 24/03/2008 14:40

I don't mind seeing snogging anywhere. When it is really noisy and really close I still feel squeamish.

Does that make me a prude?

Aitch · 24/03/2008 14:43

yes, and your sex life must be shite. i do love how when people disagree on MN it invariably comes down to how good their sex life may or may not be. if you disagree with MF, for example, it's almost always crap.

NomDePlume · 24/03/2008 14:43

I think MN is pretty unhomophobic on the whole.

I agree with MP's first post

sometimes i think your view of life is so black/white that you are about 16 but i suspect the answer is mid-twenties.

What a very strange accusation Aitch..........

Aitch · 24/03/2008 15:12

you think? depends how many times you've run up against MF, i suppose. it's just my impression, not an accusation. she's either mid-twenties or not, i'm either right or i'm wrong.
