What does your network think about trans people?

Immediate family think it's all a bit silly, trans people should be treated well but you cannot change sex. Women's spaces should be protected etc.

But interestingly all of my university friends think trans women are women (did go to a London uni with well to do sorts).

I'm 31 btw.

No one cares, few know any Trans people.

Its all about the cost of living, roads, NHS and GPs, some moan about migration.

Most people think the country is fucked, a basket case.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/02/2024 20:40

That they're people.
I can't imagine anyone I know being bothered/interested in it.

Porridgeislife · 16/02/2024 20:42

Quietly opened the door to conversation at dinner with a group of mid 30s, early 40s well paid professional peers recently (we’re in finance) and was relieved to hear that they were all gender critical. All were outraged at the way JK Rowling has been treated.

My younger sister works in the arts and is very much “trans women are women”. But I was fascinated recently that we both gazed unwittingly at an admittedly beautiful 19-ish trans woman who walked towards us as (clearly) the uncanny valley effect was confusing our subconscious minds.

Mythnames · 16/02/2024 20:29

I do, however, think it was ridiculous at my last place of work just how much bandwidth was given to trans acceptance and giving them a voice, fine, but at the expense of giving other much larger underrepresented groups like women and black people a voice - and also, no one cares. Like corporates shout about it a lot and make it a big thing but outside diversity training no one really cares

I have a theory about this. Trans people are an absolute fraction of the population. For employers, it’s much easier to make accommodations and centre their needs than to centre those of bigger populations such as women and ethnic minorities, plus it’s a great deal more high profile thanks to Stonewall etc

My employer has paid for medical transition (via insurance) for some years but there are no benefits for menopause or infertility and our insurer tends to question you very intently if you need help with gynae issues, as apparently the only reason you’d seek help is fertility related.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 16/02/2024 20:51

One friend totally onboard with a trans female is a woman.

Everyone else including work colleagues think it's all a load of bollocks

Blackcats7 · 16/02/2024 20:52

I live in a rural area and my friends are all late middle age plus and some are not really aware of the whole issue as live in their own bubble but the few who are aware think that there is a huge amount of social contagion and well meaning but misinformed supporters, some very aggressive campaigners and some vulnerable young people being misdirected. And that there are also men with a sexual fetish within the group who now feel emboldened to act out their fantasies in public.

EasternStandard · 16/02/2024 20:52

I read this thinking my mobile network

For the personal one it’s mixed with some strong views

makeupme · 16/02/2024 20:54

My peers are fed up Trans stories take up increasing amounts of female news as well as women's spaces. Like, you do you but do we all have to talk about the trans privilege of the West all of the time when women have such huge issues globally?

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 16/02/2024 20:54

Don't care, dress up all you want as long as you're polite and respectful and don't try to usurp womens safe spaces and women's sports, or act inappropriately around children.

And CIS is an offensive term. We can respect your pronouns, if you respect that women/men don't want cis as theirs.

RightOnTheEdge · 16/02/2024 20:55

It never really comes up in conversation with my friends or family, except once, one of my friends was talking about someone she knows who's small child, primary age, was born a boy, but who is now living as a girl and the parents are encouraging it. She fully supports the parents and thinks it's great.
I stayed out of the conversation because I really disagree, but didnt want to spoil the atmosphere of the evening by getting into a debate about it.

My wider family don't talk about it, but my daughter says there is a trans girl in her year (yr8) but has only mentioned it a couple of times. She says the trans girl is allowed to get changed for PE in the teacher's toilets.

PurpleSparkles82 · 16/02/2024 20:57

Wear what you like, call yourself by a different name if you like…….No issue as long as they stay out of women’s spaces and women’s sports.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 16/02/2024 20:59

We are all of the opinion if they have a penis they are male and if they have a vagina they are female. Toilets, changing rooms, sports are determined by what’s in their pants. Anyone doesn’t like it it fully entitled to their own opinion, as we are ours.

TeresaCrowd · 16/02/2024 20:59

A couple of trans friends, both directions, all transitioned ‘before it was cool’ so then I was very trans women are women. Surgery involved and very normal people, not preachy just living. No they/them yin/yang pronouns, just went from he to she and vice versa. Nowadays sadly I think the weird and wonderful have ruined it a bit and I feel sorry for the attention seeking teens that seem to be changing on a whim to a series of unicorn genders.

InnocentAndDeranged · 16/02/2024 21:00

Everyone I know:

Thinks the non binary, they/them etc is ridiculous bollocks.

Thinks its not possible to change sex.

Thinks trans people should be able to live their lives in peace, in their own trans or birth sex spaces.

No one agrees men with penises should be in women's spaces, changes rooms, single sex pool sessions etc.

Everyone thinks the indoctrination and grooming of children is just fucking wrong.

All born in the 80s, working class, a few went to uni.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 16/02/2024 21:01

Wear what you like but you can never change sex nor should men take part in women's sports.

My daughter thinks TWAW but it's the generation I suppose.

alloalloallo · 16/02/2024 21:02

Simbaonedaythiswillallbeyours · 16/02/2024 19:54

People can identify as whatever they wish. Not bothered and I will use their preferred pronouns.

However, biological men should not be allowed in womens sport, bathrooms, changing rooms or any other female safe space regardless of how they identify. Penises do not belong in womens safe spaces. No exceptions.

Men vs women in sport is categorically unfair and trans athletes should have their own suitable category.

It’s not a subject that has come up much but when it has, we all pretty much agree as the above.

I don’t care what name you want to use, I don’t care what clothes you want to wear, but sex is sex and you can’t change that.

HumphreyCushionintheHouse · 16/02/2024 21:02

We just watched the Dr Who specials with my tween and 20something children. They clocked Rose, the transgirl, immediately, and were eye rolling and full of opinions. My tween says half her class now use they/them pronouns and thinks it’s ridiculous, the oldest said it’s just tiresome and meaningless at this point.

Gowlett · 16/02/2024 21:02

Dad had big hair in the 70s, of course. Everyone did. But he wouldn’t have associated it with feminine traits, probably because he had a big beard too! He had no problem with it today, he was just fascinated by this person. I was surprised, too.

Helleofabore · 16/02/2024 21:03

Most of my friends believe that sex cannot change. And many are parents of teens and a few of us are closely or directly impacted by teens with trans identities in some way. It is very very concerning that there is so little robustly evidenced information out there. So much of it it is shaped from the male perspective and ignores the much greater harm to female people.

Then there is the impact on female sports even at low level. Becsuse for instance, football allows male people to play as female. This directly impacts the safety of girls.

Of course, there is significant issues with organisations such as girl guides too which allows male people to join as if they were female people. At group level and at leader level.

I don’t know any of my friends in the UK who believe that any male can be a woman. I think that some people who declare there are no issues must be fucking lucky in life to not be in a situation where there are ‘no issues’.

Gowlett · 16/02/2024 21:03

Not surprised by the Trans person. But by Dad’s reaction.

LoveAHamSandwhich · 16/02/2024 21:03

notknowledgeable · 16/02/2024 19:36

non issue. Anyone can dress as they want and be called what they want. No one cares. As long as men keep out of women's sports and women's places, it doesn't affect anyone else, does it. Two transwomen among my friends - one in their 20s one in their 50s

You do realise that that is transphobic?

LlynTegid · 16/02/2024 21:04

Don't have the conversation very much to be honest. Always frame it as wanting to see women protected and fair sporting competition. Usually get an understanding response as to where my views are coming from.

OhcantthInkofaname · 16/02/2024 21:04

I'm with your family and their take on this.

IStandWithACrutch · 16/02/2024 21:05

Nobody in my circle thinks biological men should compete in women’s sport. One friend has a teenage nephew presenting as a girl and is adamant that his autism is at the root of that.

notknowledgeable · 16/02/2024 21:05

LoveAHamSandwhich · 16/02/2024 21:03

are you being sarcastic?
