My husband still thinks everything is because of Covid

Sorry, I didn't know how to word the title.

His attitude is making me want a divorce. Ever since Covid he's adopted views which I completely disagree with and I think he's verging on conspiracy theory.

I just mentioned to him this evening that Chris Hoy has cancer.

Instantly he said "that's because of the Covid vaccine."

WHAT???

I'm actually so angry because he genuinely believes he's right and I'm wrong.

Everything that goes wrong is because of the vaccine.

Wwyd in this situation?

I would. If we were in a position again where there was a new, unknown, seemingly highly contagious and deadly virus whose transmission mode was unknown - I would lockdown again whilst scientists around the world worked on some answers and to limit the number of people needing urgent healthcare.

It was a sensible thing to do and would be again.

So would my friend...........................who works in a care home!!

JenniferBooth · 18/02/2024 15:32

What do you do for a living @Srgchh

Srgchh · 18/02/2024 16:04

@JenniferBooth why do you ask?

This is the argument that is usually followed up by the conspirator with a load of bile and bull.

Unless we’re all committed to studying to degree level the nuts and bolts of everything we hold an opinion on then we’re all trusting in someone else’s knowledge and experience. It’s the foundation of civilisation - standing on the shoulders of giants and all that.

The conspirator is completely unable to admit this to themselves and would rather have a football match slanging match and rabidly tell you to ‘do your own research ‘.

Is it really? I debated a pp who initially asserted that their beliefs were based on reasoning and logic. However when challenged, after turning "rabid" and attempting to goad me into a reaction, they admitted that more accurately, their beliefs were in fact based entirely on faith in the establishment, trust, and deference to apparent authorities.

There's plenty of examples of instances where "The Science" or "The Experts" have made mistakes. From the thalidomide tragedy, to the misguided dietary fat recommendations that prevailed for years, to the replication crisis, it's evident that even the most prestigious scientific institutions and authorities aren't immune to error, nor corruption.

I've certainly seen more hostility and "rabid" reactions to those who question dominant narratives, particularly on here - many openly state they simply couldn't tolerate such people.

I freely admit that I don't know everything - but that doesn't mean that I'll place total faith in establishment authorities for decisions about my body and health. With Covid, I perceived my personal risk to be low and the benefits from the jab to be marginal at best, and never got one. I don't regret that.

@Srgchh Oh come on You know why!

Noseyoldcow · 18/02/2024 16:27

When you inject millions and millions of people with any vaccine, there are bound to be an unfortunate few who suffer serious side effects. I considered very carefully whether I wanted the covid vaccine, it being so new and relatively untested and all (unlike, say, the polio vaccine) but then I was more scared of covid itself so figured it was worth the risk.

Merryoldgoat · 18/02/2024 16:32

@Lea3

It’s one thing to question the narrative and to maintain a healthy level of scepticism.

Deciding that the vaccination isn’t for you for those reasons, whilst I disagree, is an understandable position. Claiming they are causing accelerated cancers with no evidence, that Covid is just a cold, believing a YouTuber with no expertise in the area who purposely misrepresents his credentials is NOT reasonable.

Being unsure or skeptical is different from spreading untruths or refusing to listen to people who have indisputably more knowledge in a specific area.

Thanks, and I agree with you - to unquestioningly believe the claims of a youtuber is in fact the opposite of healthy scepticism.

Urgh. My husband said the same when I told him Steve Wright had died. I said 'are you kidding? Have you seen how unhealthy he looked?' and luckily he backed down with the vaccine conspiracy shit right away. But I know he still believes it. I came seriously close to wanting to divorce him during Covid, and told him so, so at least now he has the sense not to spout his nonsense at me, but I understand the frustration and disappointment you must feel knowing you are married to someone with these views.

I read on TwiX that some people think Alexei Navalny died due to the COVID vaccine.

Blackcountryexile · 18/02/2024 16:57

OP I do hope that your husband isn't the guy who was loudly sharing inaccurate conspiracy theory stuff on the bus last Friday.I feel very sorry for anyone who has to spend much time with him. He'd have been much better giving some attention to the small child he was supposedly caring for.

I have a few people in my life who think everything was caused by vaccines.

The maddest one at the moment is “everyone has coughs and colds at the moment, probably because of the Covid vaccine”.. um no, it’s much more likely to be because of Covid! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Honestly if my husband started with this shit I wouldn’t be able to take him seriously anymore.

Covid itself is far more likely to cause health implications than the vaccine. Like any vaccine there's a chance of side effects and complications.

Easier to just blame the vaccine, although it was the vaccine that allowed everything to open up properly again.

SwingTheMonkey · 18/02/2024 17:25

I know of someone who is a major conspiracy theory nut. You name it, they’re into it… Covid (the “plandemic”), Bill Gates, Tom Hanks changing his citizenship because Greece doesn’t outlaw paeophilia, pizza-gate etc etc. There is no way on earth I could be married to this person, or anyone with such little ability to think critically.
I’d be having a serious talk with my husband if I were op. I honestly think that often, these ideas are symptomatic of mental illness (as in the case above). Does he need to go and speak to someone? If he didn’t seek help I think I’d have to leave because it’ll only get worse.

Yes. The pizza restaurant where they abuse children in the basement, even though the restaurant didn’t have a basement…..

Because the 'fact checkers' said so? That's not consistent with their previous statements.

Are you seriously saying that you believe a child abuse ring operated out of a pizzeria? And that the authorities covered it up?

Really? Well let me make it clearer. The reasons for the lockdown compliance previously was because they found the sweet spot. What is the sweet spot i hear you ask?! Well the sweet spot is that Covid is dangerous but not so dangerous that the essential workers (care workers, shop workers, delivery people , refuse collectors I could go on) arent too scared to actually go out to work. It will be hard to find that sweet spot again. Go over the top with the danger warnings and people (including essential workers) will be scared to go out to work. Then there is partygate.

And i think you DO know that me asking what you do for a living was me trying to ascertain whether or not you are from the laptop class re, your job

I really really hope that God forbid if we have another lockdown (and plenty of people think it should be a first resort rather than a last) that the essential workers lock down too) Particularly as we have gone back to the default setting of looking down on them and treating them like shit especially if they live in social housing. Can just imagine the names they would get called by their so called "betters" if they locked down too though!!!

Is there anything that I could say to make you change your mind about this pizza restaurant? Anything? Because I don’t think there is. So there is no point in having this conversation.

@MadeOfAllWork I think that’s the thing… the people who believe this stuff (this particularly batshit example originated in that well known font of truth and integrity ‘4chan’)aren’t going to budge so there’s very little point in arguing.

Lea3 · 18/02/2024 18:12

Merryoldgoat · 18/02/2024 17:57

We know that these people exist in all walks of life, including amongst the rich and powerful. This country has one particularly well-known and grotesque example.

We know that they form networks of like-minded individuals.

I'm not sure what the significance of the physical location is in its credibility?

In this country we've seen it revealed that a Knight of the realm had keys to a morgue which he used to abuse dead bodies; that the church had a conspiracy to protect abusers on an industrial scale; recently in Glasgow there was a satanic abuse ring convicted at the high court. It can be happening anywhere.

@MadeOfAllWork I could ask you the same question.

Rewis · 18/02/2024 18:15

My fave has been someone said Selma Blair got her MS from covid vax. She was diagnosed in 2018.

Merryoldgoat · 18/02/2024 18:17

@Lea3

I absolutely do not dispute the existence of people abusing children wholesale.

I do think that if it were true that the INTERNATIONAL interest might’ve resulted in some further action.

Lea3 · 18/02/2024 18:21

So your entire argument is "It's not true because my selected media hasn't told me otherwise"?

And do you have any evidence that they're fake posts? You've actually entirely fabricated that claim.

I know they're real because I saw them on both accounts before it started to blow up, when they got wiped and then made private. There were far more posts along the same lines, now almost impossible to find.

Thanks for explaining. I hear you and I hear your anger. I understand your position now. I was neither class - I was self employed and couldn’t work during lockdown so I was pretty skint, but neither did I have to go out like essential workers and risk my life. Yeah, I do see your point. I am in employment now (min wage) but would still lockdown in a heartbeat if another deadly virus came along.
