I have a son in year 1 who's almost 6 and I'm 40 I feel ancient at the school pick up when they're all still in their 30s

Anyone else can relate?

In September I'll be worse as I'll have another son of age 4 in reception and me still being 40 and old.

It must be where you live. I'm 46 with an almost 9 years old and an almost 5 years old. I don't even notice I'm older than most.

Secondsop · 16/02/2024 21:34

Honestly people won’t be batting an eyelid. Being 40 with kids that age is totally unremarkable where I live. In fact this September my third child will start reception - and a month later I turn 49.

Grah · 18/02/2024 11:24

I had my youngest at 44. Really didn't bother me. There were a few older mums (not as old as me!!) I chatted to, but really wasn't bothered with the younger ones. I'm happy as an older Mum, my son is happy, nothing else matters.

JRM17 · 18/02/2024 11:25

My DS will be 7 in April and then I will turn 40 in June. I would have another baby tomorrow if I could but my husband is 100% against it. Oh and he is 57 in march so must feel antient at school pick up.

shielder · 18/02/2024 11:27

Normally in London & tons of much older dads

Hollybelle83 · 18/02/2024 11:29

Nope. Completely standard in our school year. I'm also 40 with a six year old (and a two year old) and most parents are the same age as me.

HeyThere111 · 18/02/2024 11:34

Please don't refer to 40 as old. You wanna be old fine. Some people would do anything to make it to their 40s. While others would be grateful to be able to have children.
Why does everyone just wanna feel sorry for themselves over stupid stuff.

Andthereyougo · 18/02/2024 11:34

It really doesn’t matter, I doubt anyone is guaging anyone’s age these days.
Works the other way round too. I was always the youngest mum in the playground. I was mistaken for a nanny, my children’s older sister, and was talked down to by teachers as they obviously thought I was a bit of an idiot.
40 isn’t old to have a 4 year old.

mycatsanutter · 18/02/2024 11:35

My son is in year 6 and I'm 49 I'm definitely one of the older mums , all my friends are younger than me .

TheBerry · 18/02/2024 11:36

I thought it was pretty normal to have children in your 30s now?? Being 40 with a 6 year old doesn’t sound strange at all.

A bit less common to have a child late 30s but still not that weird.

amieloue · 18/02/2024 11:39

I'd say most parents of reception age kids are are mid 20 - early 40s?

shielder · 18/02/2024 11:39

It is, average age of UK FTM is 30.9

Potter23 · 18/02/2024 11:45

My DS turns 4 next month (and starts reception in September), I’ll be turning 38 - 4 days before his birthday.

so similar age to you I think!

Im personally not worried about it, my NCT friends with children Are similar age to me or maybe slightly older.

I think it’s more common to have children mid to late 30s especially when figuring out careers etc first

Underestimated4 · 18/02/2024 11:48

I’m 40 next year have a nearly 8 year old. I don’t feel old at all, most of the parents are around my age. I actually think it’s the area you live in.

BlastedPimples · 18/02/2024 11:51

You can't change it. Who cares? Why do you care?

Keep fit and strong and healthy and you'll be in good shape for your dc regardless of your age.

Whoknowsohyoudo · 18/02/2024 12:03

I'm 40 with a 6 week old and 4 year old and I feel the same way. I worry more about when she's my age and I may not be around anymore for her or my son

DriedFlowersLiveForever · 18/02/2024 12:11

I am 40 with a 17 year old and a 13 year old.
Most people my age have children much, much younger than mine. In fact I don't know many people at all with children as old as mine that are the same age as me.
I was always one of the youngest at school pick up and believe me other mums tended to keep their distance!
I still get it now at my sons hobby, we had to have a parents meeting and I was the youngest mother there by a good 10-15 years.
Oh, I also live in an economically deprived area of the country about as far from London as you can possibly get so even in the backwaters lots of people are having their children much later in life!

Kerri44 · 18/02/2024 12:20

I'm 45 in 2 weeks, my Son is 7 in Ages and Daughter is 2 in April.....I don't feel old ..I did actually think some Mums were my age and they're 10yrs younger

Lifeisbetterinflipflops8 · 18/02/2024 12:45

I’m 42 this year and have DS in year 2 (age 6) and a 2-year-old DD 🤪

But lots of the Mums from his class are around my age - a couple of them are mid to late 40s so I don’t feel old ☺️

Notamum12345577 · 18/02/2024 13:09

I don’t believe it is unusual in general. However, when my kids were in infant school, it would have been unusual. Most of us were round the mid 20s

Goldbar · 18/02/2024 13:10

Just move areas and you'll be grand 😂.

I have a 6yo. Late 30s. I'm one of the younger parents at my DC's school.

Lotus3 · 18/02/2024 14:07

Where I live, the vast majority of mums of your lil one's age group are well over 40. Which tallies pretty well with the average age to have children (31 ish).

Resisterance · 18/02/2024 14:13

I'm 50 with a kid in primary school!

Letty186 · 18/02/2024 14:17

I was 37 when I had DS and was one of the oldest at the school gate, but it was a wide age range. Myself and another mum had a right laugh, when we realised I was the same age as her mum and therefore the same age as some of the Grandparents of the children. It’s never bothered me and my son luckily laughs too.

libbylane · 18/02/2024 14:52

Where I live I'd say you a are typical age, if not a bit young. Definitely know more people who had dc in their 40's than 20's. Most were mid/late 30's for first and late 30's and early 40's for second.
