To feel like oldest mum?

I have a son in year 1 who's almost 6 and I'm 40 I feel ancient at the school pick up when they're all still in their 30s

Anyone else can relate?

In September I'll be worse as I'll have another son of age 4 in reception and me still being 40 and old.

Why are there so many threads this week about feeling so old? It's weird.

Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic · 16/02/2024 15:43

I had my last of 7 children at age 30 and because I had my first at 17 I feel much older at the school now when dropping or collecting my youngest. It doesn't matter though, I don't particularly care or let it bother me in any way. It's just the way it is and i'm only 33 so I guess I would feel old doing the school run at 40 but again does it matter, no! Plenty of parents are older parents plus there's people who have grandparents who help out with drop offs and pick ups. Just enjoy life and your children and don't worry about age, it's just a number after all. It doesn't define you, i'm sure there's so many interesting things about you apart from your age🌺

mynameiscalypso · 16/02/2024 15:45

I'm 40 with a 4 year old. I'm pretty much normal for my friendship group and about average for school parents. I definitely don't feel like an old mum at all!

Redcar78 · 16/02/2024 15:48

I have 6 year old twins and I'm 48 🤷‍♀️ who cares, my friend is 52 with a 4 year old and 18 month old, it's in your head.

PurpleChrayn · 16/02/2024 15:49

I had DS at 42. What I lack in youthfulness I make up for in money and life experience!

Well now I feel old 😂 I didn't have #1 until I was more than twice your age when you had your #1!

I'm finding 2 challenging enough, you must be superwoman with 7!

Crazycatlady79 · 16/02/2024 15:50

I'm 44 and have twin a year olds in Year 1.

I really don't ever think about my age in relation to the other Mums (until this post).

Ariona · 16/02/2024 15:52

I'm also an older mum and most of the kids in my ds class are around the same age if not older. All are professional, smart women so I don't think there's anything to be ashamed of?

MixedCouple · 16/02/2024 15:55

Yesssss!

All my Mates had their kids in their 20's.
And going to midwife apts and being told I am geriatric doesn't help. But wasnt my choice only met DH when I was 32. I didnt want to just settle for any tom, dick or harry.
So yeah when I am 40 my DC1 will be 6 and DC2 will be 4.

I do get comments in passing from strangers!! This old man judged me. We were chatting at an event and he was talking about his kids.... 1 is a celebrity from the 90's has 4 kids. And topic changed to me. And when I said I wanted more he exclaimed at your age! Also family have said and made comments not about me but other "mature" mothers.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 16/02/2024 16:10

I was 40 when my son started reception and a lot of older mums were in the same play group I attended

Not everyone who had kids younger 'just settled for any Tom, Dick or Harry'

I’m 45 this year and DD almost 7, loads of her class have parents who are 40+, in fact most are, it’s the younger parents in their 20s who stand out.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 16/02/2024 16:16

I'm 51 and my DS is 8 and I don't feel old at all when I pick him up...unless I've run a 10km and then I'm simply tired. Bearing in mind there are loads of kids at my son's school that get picked up by grandparents. Catch a grip!

TheFormidableMrsC · 16/02/2024 16:20

No. I am 54. I've just picked my 12 yo up from school. I feel absolutely fine about it.

LondonLovie · 16/02/2024 16:22

Gosh I'm 46 and have a child in year 2. I mean, sometimes I so knackered I feel 146 but generally not in comparison to other parents, I haven't a clue how old they are.

Oneofthesurvivors · 16/02/2024 16:30

I absolutely relate. I'm old enough to be the mother of a lot of the other mothers.

zingally · 16/02/2024 16:34

So you had him when you were 34/35? That's a totally normal, standard age to have a child!

I wouldn't worry about it.

My 2 are just turned 7 and I'm 39 - 40 this year - and there's plenty of other mums in the playground who are my age and older.

Goateen · 16/02/2024 17:45

And, if we're going to going to say that young women settle, that applies two fold to older women who are looking to find a man and have babies ASAP.

Vegetus · 16/02/2024 18:00

I'm 31 and my son is starting school in September and during all the school visits I was always one of the youngest parents in attendance.

berksandbeyond · 16/02/2024 18:04

It can be area dependant. At 34, with a 5 year old, I am the youngest on the PTA by a good 5 years or so!

PleaseBePacific · 16/02/2024 18:09

No, I couldn't care less now - 44 yo with y1 child

However I hated being by far the youngest when DC1 was in primary (born when I was 18)

Hesma · 16/02/2024 18:15

You’re being ridiculous… I’m 50 with a kid at primary school

Seriously79 · 16/02/2024 18:17

I'm 45 and DD is in reception. It's never been an issue.

I don't know the ages of the other parents.

Scalby · 16/02/2024 18:22

For that to be the case now I'd expect you to live in an area of high deprivation. Even living up North I'm average aged to be in my 50s with two now teenagers (I was 34 and 36 when they were born and had been married well over ten years).
I know several mums well into their 40s when they gave birth.

Libertysparkle · 16/02/2024 18:27

I'm nearly 42 and have a 9 and 6 year old.

Yes I'm older than my parents were. My Dad turned 40 when I was 10. I'm the youngest of 2. But I also didn't get married at 21 😬.

I sometimes feel old but then there are also older parents than me with younger children.

Try not to worry your children don't care how old you are.
