to think 30 pairs of jeans is a bit much?

Coffee with a couple of friends today, I have lost a bit of weight recently and was saying that my jeans don't fit me any more, so I was going to buy two new pairs. One friend pipes up "only two?" and I sad that yes, a couple of the not really fitting pairs are fine for round the house, and it's almost summer and that I have leggings, other trousers, dresses etc. And two pairs of jeans is plenty - one to wear, one in the wash.

Friend horrified. She has 30 pairs of jeans (at least) and can't understand why anyone wouldn't want multiples in every colour, every cut, regular jeans, going out jeans, posh jeans, cheap jeans.

Anyone want to admit to more than 30 pairs??

I have a lot of jeans but they've added up over the years so yes I do have different styles and colours because I don't throw them away

If people knew the environmental impact of making a single pair of jeans, i don't think they'd be quite so quick to buy so many pairs.

I don’t agree. People’s desire for new stuff or lots of stuff outweighs environmental concerns. Thats why they buy from Shein and turn a blind eye to Temu. Desire for stuff.

I get a good few days wear out of a pair of jeans before I need to wash them. Maybe your friend has body odour issues and needs to change her jeans more often.

Bargello · 15/02/2024 23:35

Hah! Don’t think so. But even if she did, 30 pairs? That’s a pair every day for a month without washing them.

I don't own any jeans (missing the point!) But I do have 3x joggers 3 x leggings 3 x comfy wide leg lounge trousers and 3 X smart trousers. I thought I was an absolute hoarder at that. I also don't know where you store it all if you have so many jeans + work clothes / going out clothes etc.

Also think we should have a thread on cardigans because that's my real issue.

And no I'm not a pensioner I'm 37 😁

This thread has totally got me considering my cardigan collection - it dawned on me recently that I have them in all colours of the rainbow. Still wear a lovely turquoise Coast cardie that I got for DD's christening 18 years ago!

I don't think the correct metric to judge people's environmental impact is how many they currently have but how many new pairs they have ever purchased. Some people may have 20 or 30 second hand pairs which may be lower impact than 10 new pairs. Some people may have 2 or 3 pairs but they like to keep an uncluttered house and have thrown away 20 pairs over their lifetime when they were still useable. Others might have changed size regularly and had to buy and dispose of or donate pairs of different sizes. Some people are congratulating themselves for a low environmental impact and small amount of stuff. Some of these people may genuinely have been prioritising the environment for decades and have worn every item of clothing until threadbare. Others just like an organised wardrobe and declutter stuff regularly or throw things away/recycle them when they are missing a button or develop a small hole.

And others would sew on the button and mend the hole, which is what people used to do when I was young. Anyone who would throw something out for those two reasons needs a good kick!

Evaka · 16/02/2024 03:25

Six pairs here. 30 is depressingly wasteful.

Fabulous 🤣

Garlickit · 16/02/2024 03:39

I've got 6 pairs, different colours, and I'm excited about them because I haven't had any jeans since the 90s! I couldn't stand skinnies so had to go denim-free until the end of 2021.

The last pair I got are my favourites and I'm annoyed I didn't get another one. I can't find them in the UK any more. Mind you, I realise I don't need 7 pairs ...

Even if I had the space for 200 dresses, a wardrobe that size would give me decision paralysis.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/02/2024 03:45

I've got 5 or 6 pairs in a size 14.

I've also got 5 or 6 pairs in the loft which are a size 12. I did take the size 10s to a charity shop as I had to accept I'm never getting back into them!

I’ve got about 30 pairs. Some are around 15 years old as I’ve stayed the same size and shape (but fashions change and I like fashion).

Definitely got over 100 tops.

All stored in the spare room - which is effectively my dressing room. I built a storage unit of shelves, double height rails, drawers, long dress hanging space etc.

Pretty much the same here.

I have about the same amount but a variation of styles. Some I have have lasted longer than my marriage 😀

Maybe I hang on to them partly for sebtimental reasons as I can sell and give away other items with ease.

I am a bit of an awkward shape and find jeans and trousers a bit difficult to buy. So I keep those that suit me, perhaps it's just psychological and I find it difficult to part then them.

OriginalFloorboards · 16/02/2024 05:20

Have horses at home and live in denim breeches have about 10 pairs. Mostly sticky bums to help me in the saddle. I have 8 pairs of normal jeans but I need cull them. My horses are at home so I’m in and out of the house, makes no sense for me to wear normal jeans in mud and hay. I think I only need 3 pairs of normal jeans as only wear when I see a non horsey friend. I do have a pair of jeans I had 24 years ago. I can’t get in them (big thighs due to riding) but I love them. Stupid really. They need to go. In fact I need a clear out of lots of stuff to thin down the wardrobe.

I absolutely agree with this and started to post similar last night but couldn’t face the potential pile on!

I re-sell clothes, donate to charity shops, repair clothes, have items repurposed by a dressmaker, buy second hand, have many many clothes that I’ve had for over 20 years (plus a second hand Burberry trench from 1985) and yet ‘THIRTY pairs of jeans? You absolute HORROR’.

Tiny snapshot / huge judgement.

Waystation · 16/02/2024 06:50

I have 15 pairs but only 7 styles - I buy short and regular length in each style so I can wear them with flats or heels (by heels I mean boots with heels or stacked trainers) - the 15th pair they only sold in regular so I turn them up if I wear with flats.

nonevernotever · 16/02/2024 06:52

I have 4 pairs, but at one point my sister had 87 pairs. She spent a lot of time at car boot sales and in charity shops and apparently couldn't resist buying jeans. Now that she's moved house she's halved that number, but still a lot of jeans....

TwoShades1 · 16/02/2024 06:55

2 is definitely not enough! I managed with 2 while I was pregnant. But I still fitted into some of my normal ones until 20ish weeks. I say 30 might be too many unless you only wear jeans and don’t have other pants, dresses, etc.

Kalevala · 16/02/2024 06:57

I have four and I only wear jeans

Goatymum · 16/02/2024 07:08

I wear trousers all the time, v rarely wear a dress even in summer. I have 3 blue jeans, 1 black and 1 grey and a pair of cords and trackies when I’m in the house! Plus leggings which I wear w hoodies. It’s just about enough to stave off boredom and I could do w new blue jeans as mine are wearing a bit. 30 is excessive!!!

mondaytosunday · 16/02/2024 07:11

Jeez even my fashion plate son who works for a men's boutique only has five pairs of jeans (and no others other than gym gear and he has to wear trousers every day, presumably your friend doesn't). My teenage daughter has three. Where does your friend keep them all??

WaltzingWaters · 16/02/2024 07:11

I have one pair! But I live in yoga leggings.

Kalevala · 16/02/2024 07:19

Is she one of those people who buy jeans with holes in them?

Bargello · 16/02/2024 07:54

Kalevala · 16/02/2024 07:19

No that's my teenage daughter. Who then complains she's cold.

I am fully on board with buying second hand, vintage and so on and one of my two pairs of fitting jeans is second hand bought in a charity shop. But still, even if you are trying to minimise your impact by buying second hand, nobody needs dozens of pairs of jeans. 87 is just nuts!

Now there's a sentence I'll never unread

ViciousCurrentBun · 16/02/2024 08:21

I have three pairs, 2 that I wear and a pair of skinny jeans I keep as an indicator as to how fat my backside is getting must have had them for close to 20 years. I mainly wear combat trousers, I have since I was about 15 around 40 years ago and had to buy them in ex military clothes suppliers as they were not available in clothes shops. I like the pockets. I must have 5 pairs of those.
