to think 30 pairs of jeans is a bit much?

Coffee with a couple of friends today, I have lost a bit of weight recently and was saying that my jeans don't fit me any more, so I was going to buy two new pairs. One friend pipes up "only two?" and I sad that yes, a couple of the not really fitting pairs are fine for round the house, and it's almost summer and that I have leggings, other trousers, dresses etc. And two pairs of jeans is plenty - one to wear, one in the wash.

Friend horrified. She has 30 pairs of jeans (at least) and can't understand why anyone wouldn't want multiples in every colour, every cut, regular jeans, going out jeans, posh jeans, cheap jeans.

Anyone want to admit to more than 30 pairs??

@Itslegitimatesalvage

You have a couple hundred dresses?!

I am in AWE

And how many tights?!? @Itslegitimatesalvage

my weight fluctuates due to thyroid etc..also need different styles and lengths.. eg I had Tall range when Dorothy Perkins and Topshop was here, I had reg length and a few cropped. Different fits and styles. When I moved house last year I was surprised how many I unearthed and did put at least 30 pairs in the charity bag.. as for plain black leggings, it was about 90 pairs! I
was not proud of that admittedly ;) but being tall, whenever I saw the long ones in Primark I simply bought a pair as can be hard to get. I've learnt the error of my ways now I've moved to a small place ;)

Does she only ever wear jeans? Coz maybe if that’s all you wear then you’d have loads.
I only wear dresses, all year round and have a couple hundred to cover autumn dresses, winter dresses and then spring and summer, and for during the day and night outs etc.

A couple of hundred dresses ShockShock Where on earth do you keep them all?

I tend to wear a skirt and tee shirt all summer - I have eight skirts and six tee shirts, and think I have too many skirts!

alltoomuchrightnow · 15/02/2024 21:41

I'll add to that.. they obviously weren't hard to get considering what I ended up with, but I was always panicked that Primark would stop doing them as I was sick of all the other brands giving me cold ankles! and I did wear them out pretty quick..

RandomUsernameHere · 15/02/2024 21:42

6 here, 7 including jeans style cords

DyslexicPoster · 15/02/2024 21:42

I have about ten pairs. But I'd rather have three perfect pairs. I'm wearing mine to death right now before I buy more. Less is more going forward. Its not like they are hard to come by

Wow, I'm shocked at some of these responses! I have 5 pairs, two of which are white and only worn in summer. I wear jeans most days. My closet is gone though about every 6 months and I will donate items not worn or coveted.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 15/02/2024 21:47

That ridiculous, such a waste of money and the planets resources. I own two pairs!

Isitovernow123 · 15/02/2024 21:51

Omg I buy 2 pairs every 3-4 years, and even then, they are normally half price. Admittedly they’re normally Gant, Diesel or Levi’s, but they last so well!

MumblesParty · 15/02/2024 21:51

I’m astounded at how much wardrobe space people must have! I don’t think I’ve had 30 pairs of jeans in my whole life, and I’m 56. And I wear jeans all the time when not at work.

Renamed · 15/02/2024 21:52

So this is what people use bookshelf space for these days…?

user1470899178 · 15/02/2024 21:53

30 pairs seems a heck of a lot! However, I think you are BU, or at least very optimistic, that it is nearly summer in mid February! 🤣

alltoomuchrightnow · 15/02/2024 21:54

Roses, not really in my case, I managed charity shops and bought a lot from there.. that's definitely recycling..and then they returned to charity shop

@Itslegitimatesalvage holy shit, a couple of hundred!! So even if you wore a dress for the day and a different one for the evening, every single day, you could go 3 months without wearing the same dress twice?!! Your wardrobe must be the size of my house.

Bargello · 15/02/2024 21:55

I am not sure how many pairs I have owned over the years, probably more than 30 yes. But I don’t buy to add to a collection. Jeans bought in 1995 would have been worn to death, then recycled in the textiles bin. I do have items in my wardrobe which are decades old but the sort of thing I don’t wear often. Everyday clothing is bought, worn regularly until it wears out, replaced.

if someone has 200 dresses they are only being worn once or maybe twice a year at most. Or more likely, the same 12 favourite ones are getting worn loads and the others are sitting in the wardrobe. All this buying and consuming is just so wasteful.

I have one pair! And recently answered another post to say my kids have never been abroad. I feel like the mumsnet poor relation today

WhichWayPleaseImLost · 15/02/2024 22:02

I am still wearing the same pair of jeans that I bought from Miss Sixty at 21. (I'm nearly 50). And I have worn them SO MUCH! I do have a few other, shorter lived pairs but a new pair is only purchased when the next newest pair gets holey, then relegated to gardening. Even so, I have never disposed of pair of jeans, and I only have about 8 pairs.

Jeans are one of the worst offenders climate wise, so yes, the early part of this thread is very depressing.

NoodletheSchnoodle · 15/02/2024 22:05

30 is insane. I am not exaggerating when I say I wear jeans every day of my life and i only have 6 pairs in my wardrobe, 2 of which I don't wear very often.

I then have 2 pairs that are far too small that live in the spare wardrobe in hopes I will
fit back into them one day.

So as a religious jeans wearer 30 is ridiculous, my entire wardrobe would be full with that many!

CrushingOnRubies · 15/02/2024 22:27

I have 6ish

One in the wash
One smart
One on the go
One muddy due to a dog walk but fine about the house and other dog walks
One way past their best but comfy
One kept for decorating

Christy135 · 15/02/2024 22:44

I have 3 and I’m considering that I should probably get another pair.

30 sounds crazy to me.

whiteboardking · 15/02/2024 22:46

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2024 19:44

Where on earth would you keep 30 pairs of jeans?

Not just me then!! I prob have 15 pairs of jeans / trousers and most don't get worn. Two drawers and I need to cull as no space

Watercolourpapier · 15/02/2024 22:59

If people knew the environmental impact of making a single pair of jeans, i don't think they'd be quite so quick to buy so many pairs.

WhichEllie · 15/02/2024 23:15

I probably have 15-18 pairs or so, but I’m not a big jeans wearer. I’ll throw a pair on to walk the dog or get groceries in the winter. I do wear white denim in spring and summer so those are probably my most worn.

I won’t comment on dresses or cashmere jumpers though as I’ve amassed many dozens of each. I wear dresses all summer and live in cashmere all winter because it gets so cold here.

As for where I keep it all, I moved to the US around six years ago so I have a walk-in closet. It’s absolutely brilliant. Grin

Allican · 15/02/2024 23:21

This is mad to me. I think I have 2 pairs I wear regular, then a couple others I occasionally wear..but that’s it. I always wear jeans in the autumn, winter. Can’t stand them when it’s warm though so I’m straight to shorts asap.

Also edit to add, the jeans I do have were all bought 2nd hand!
