People who shorten your name.

I have a name that wasn't unheard of in the 70s, it wasn't popular but it wasn't a complete rarity.

A shortened version of my name became Very Fucking Popular in the 00's but was used before then.

I have never been known as the shortened version of my name, I do not introduce myself as the shortened version of my name. The only people who have ever presumed to use a shortened version of my name are men both professionally and personally who are introduced to me, and then, for some reason, chose to call me by the shortened version of my name.

I obviously correct anyone who does this.

And I have taken to calling anyone who does by a shortened version of their name. No matter how stupid it sounds.

I was going to finish my post with a; 'But why do they do it?'.

I know why they do it.

They need to stop it though.

It's very annoying.

I’ve been called by the shortened version of my name for so long that my actual name sounds weird to me!
I never used to ask anyone to call me it, but now I prefer it because I hate my actual name!

I don't get this at all. My name has been given to me by my mam and dad, so I get why they always call me by the full version. Other than that as far as I can tell it is up to others how they address me- nicknames in my view belong to the nicknamer rather than the nicknamee. Similarly all the 'i want to call my child Edward nickname Eddie' is nonsense as nicknames come organically in life not set in stone. Genuinely do not get the angst about people affectionately choosing to nickname or shorten a name which is what seems to mainly be the case.

I strongly disagree. It's up to me how I would like to be known not up to anyone else how they want to address me.

I don't know anyone with a two+ syllable name that has people call them by their full name. Literally just gone through my family and friends of about 30 people in my head, and everyone has had the short version bestowed upon them.

One of my children has a one syllable name and we lengthen it despite calling the rest of our kids the short version. Think Sam/Sammy. Weird.

Well I have a two syllable name as has my Dad and that is what we are known and called. Only inconsiderates call us by the shortened versions. All three of my SILs have two syllable names and only one of them occasionally gets it shortened. In the wider family it is not really done either.

Happens to me all the time. So assumptious!

If I introduce myself as x that's what I expect to be called.

I always correct them straight away.
