To think King Charles would do more for awareness by saying which cancer he has

Why all the secrecy? Everyone knows where the prostate is so is fully aware of the initial investigations - if he is happy to share that very personal info, why not say what cancer? It would surely be more useful for him to say ‘it’s this, I had symptoms but ignored them..’

Same as what the Queen died of and I think Kate’s missed a trick in not making herself more human by sharing a little more around the abdo surgery. Childbirth does all kinds of shit to women’s bodies, it seems a good subject to say ‘happens to us all’

Is there some royal protocol that means they can’t say?

Being diagnosed with cancer is a massive process to go through. It takes people time to even tell their nearest and dearest. It's obscene to suggest someone needs to announce it to the whole world on the very first day! He might not even have all his test results and treatment plan finalised yet. He might want to talk to his actual family and friends and get his head round things before he talks to the media or whoever.

FWIW I agree with you, but I can imagine a lot of speculation about survival rates for various different kinds of cancer, if we know what it was, so I do get that.

The PoW should 100% have said what her surgery was, assuming it was something routine; eg. could have said hysterectomy without sharing any details of her actual condition. The fact it was the same day that the King announced his prostate issues make it very noticeable that she didn't.

Imagine every single person you met, in every public and private engagement for the rest of your life, knowing that you'd had a hysterectomy for endometriosis (or a bowel resection for ulcerative colitis, or whatever it may have been)? She does not owe that to the world; nobody does.

BobbyBiscuits · 06/02/2024 22:26

It seems unnecessary not to be specific. Cancer could be anywhere and lots of people really look up to the royals and if he said the symptoms it could encourage people to come forward. Maybe the gov don't want him to in case tons of people flood the NHS for tests etc which they can't afford or deal with?

Legendairy · 06/02/2024 22:28

Tallulahss · 06/02/2024 21:26

Yes it's private and he doesent need to but why specify that it's not prostate cancer? Either keep it a secret or say has cancer. Seems odd to say he has it but it's not that one!!!

Because they already announced that the enlarged prostate issue was not cancer related, so it would look as if they had lied, which they hadn't

saraclara · 06/02/2024 22:36

For goodness' sake, it was a fortnight before we even told our own young adult kids about my late DH's cancer. Yet half the population seems to think that they should be told every detail of the kings diagnosis just days after he knew himself.

Lots of people might look up to him, but he's still entitled to a sliver of a private life, FFS.

It's unlikely that he had any symptoms to tell anyone about, since this was only found by accident.

His cancer isn't about anyone else but him.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 06/02/2024 22:43

I thought the point he made was that he didn't have any symptoms. This got picked up as part of an investigation into his prostate. 'Awareness' normally means remind people of symptoms, to check for lumps etc. If he didn't have any symptoms, what would he be making people aware of, other than private medical info?

I didn't realise that apparently 20% of cancers are picked up incidentally when someone goes for another treatment.

Hopefully it will prompt discussion of the impact of the NHS backlog on picking up cancers.

Spirallingdownwards · 06/02/2024 22:46

Perhaps he will once he has recovered.

TheUsualChaos · 06/02/2024 22:48

Perhaps in time they will share more detail. Perhaps he wants to finish treatment before saying anything else. Or perhaps they have shared as much information as they ever want to. Even if they said the type of cancer people would still speculate on what his treatment plan would be, what his prognosis is like, whether it's hereditary... It just goes on and on.

skyfalldown · 06/02/2024 22:50

I don't think it's really any mystery what the 96-year-old queen died of...

Halfwaytheree · 06/02/2024 22:53

To be honest, he’s the King - any personal medical information shared at this time should be on a need to know basis. Presumably it counts as being classified or a security risk. The King having cancer and being unwell puts the UK/monarchy in a bit of a vulnerable position- I wouldn’t put it past people to target the King as a result. Whether that’s intercepting medication or assassination attempts lol (maybe I watch too many shows). I don’t think raising awareness of the type of cancer he has is the top priority right now.

  1. I went for a head MRI for nothing to do with cancer.
  1. Got the result which was clear for what they were looking for " but we found a small tumour on your pituitary gland" so I was referred to the appropriate consultant.
  1. That consultant had no concerns about that tumour "but how long have you had that lump on your neck?"
  1. I'm referred for a biopsy on that lump Which fortunately was okay, but I still have to have it monitored.

So one investigation led to another, which led to another. I was starting to get paranoid about what the next doctor would find.

Rosebel · 06/02/2024 22:54

The Royal Family don't get to keep a lot private so think they are entitled to keep their medical issues private.
Would you want to share with a load of strangers your medical history?

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 06/02/2024 22:54

I am glad they are keeping it private. I wish they would have kept the prostate information private. I did not need that image in my head.
I wish their entire lives were private and I never had to hear about them ever again, unless Andrew is arrested and facing a court of law for being a nonce.

Please let’s wrap the whole thing up when charles dies, and pretend the royal family never happened. If nothing else, surely William can’t be fucked with it all. It’s a nightmare just watching them all, I cannot imagine living it.

TerriPie · 06/02/2024 22:54

It's early days still for all the medical tests, treatment and prognosis. Maybe they have found a tumour but don't know at this stage if it's a primary or secondary.

I'm sure if the King thinks releasing further information in the weeks to come will be of benefit to others, and not just keeping the nosey happy, he will do so.

OhcantthInkofaname · 06/02/2024 22:54

The Queen kept her cancer a secret. I think he has told enough for now. Until he has had preliminary treatments

sunr111se · 06/02/2024 22:56

Fuck- op you are awful. We have zero right to know their medical conditions. I have huge empathy for them being poorly and more that weirdos
Like you think that being Royalty makes them and their health public knowledge

PatchworkElmer · 06/02/2024 22:56

Many many reasons. Firstly, it’s private medical information that he doesn’t have to reveal. Secondly, a diagnosis is likely hugely traumatic not only for him but for his family- not sure how I’d feel if I or a loved one had cancer and the next day the papers were full of speculation about prognosis and symptoms. Give the poor man time and space. He is a human being.

LemonLymanDotCom · 06/02/2024 22:59

Maybe, just maybe, a head of state may not want people thinking about his bowels/rectum/bladder whenever they see him? Maybe he can’t stand the intrusion, maybe it’s a step too far. Maybe, it’s no one’s business and just nosey subjects wanting a metaphorical gawp at something rather unedifying or undignified.

As various posters have said, we’re all aware cancer exists, what more awareness needs to be raised? It’s not like he’ll be facing the usual subjects’ experience of cancer treatment anyways….

Wanttobeok · 06/02/2024 22:59

It will be colon cancer and I'm sure at some point he will come forward with that information.

Give the guy a fucking minute

TerriPie · 06/02/2024 23:01

@cakeorwine It happens surprisingly often, a family friend had a nasty fall which broke her leg and A&E spotted some type of bone cancer on her xray, was too late for her to be cured.

A family member of mine had a routine blood test, which flagged up something pointing to renal cancer and there was a massive tumour on the scan.

Shame we can't have more general MOT services on NHS.

IloveAslan · 06/02/2024 23:02

Do you tell all and sundry all your medical details OP? If not they why are you expecting others to? Everyone has a right to privacy, no matter who they are.

PinkArt · 06/02/2024 23:04

OP what difference would it make to any of us to know it's say colon cancer? Or bladder, liver, bowel cancer etc? He has cancer, it's shit for him, he doesn't need to let people know which of his organs is currently a bit fucked.

Livelovebehappy · 06/02/2024 23:04

TheMarzipanDildo · 06/02/2024 21:09

I don’t think he even needed to tell us he had cancer tbh

Agree. But I think the RF are trying to be more open about things that happen, due to the fact that other people in the know might decide to share the info with the media, or pop it in their next book….. Better to get in there first and avoid it being leaked out.
