To think King Charles would do more for awareness by saying which cancer he has

Why all the secrecy? Everyone knows where the prostate is so is fully aware of the initial investigations - if he is happy to share that very personal info, why not say what cancer? It would surely be more useful for him to say ‘it’s this, I had symptoms but ignored them..’

Same as what the Queen died of and I think Kate’s missed a trick in not making herself more human by sharing a little more around the abdo surgery. Childbirth does all kinds of shit to women’s bodies, it seems a good subject to say ‘happens to us all’

Is there some royal protocol that means they can’t say?

Some things are fine to keep private. The type of King's cancer and Kate's abdominal surgery fall into the "fine to keep private" category.

Absolutely.

TraitorsGate · 06/02/2024 21:22

Hopefully the mantra early diagnosis is vital, gets through to the government so they can actually do something to address the chronic lack of staff , chronic underfunding and lack of facilities to help people actually get that early diagnosis instead of dying before they ever get to start treatment

BobnLen · 06/02/2024 21:22

They probably had to mention cancer because of the side effects of some cancer drugs, which would be quite obvious if he suddenly lost his hair and had to pop to outpatients a lot.

Moier · 06/02/2024 21:23

It's bladder cancer.. they found it when he had the camera tube into his postrate.
A surgeon spoke about this morning.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 06/02/2024 21:23

I don't agree. Neither of them should be expected to provide that sort of information. Would you want to share private medical information with the world? I know I wouldn't.

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 06/02/2024 21:24

I know people have a right to privacy, just seems weird after being very candid about going in for the prostate. Also, the ‘raising awareness’ kind of came from him, not me!

Really, which surgeon was this? The one treating him ?

Blanketenvy · 06/02/2024 21:26

Thing is if he disclosed the cancer then people will want to know the stage, the symptoms, his treatment plan. You'll have whole newspapers dedicated to his 5 year survival odds. You have to draw the line somewhere.

Dapbag · 06/02/2024 21:26

I can't imagine how it must feel to be diagnosed with cancer and then the following day the headline on the paper saying '(Your name here) has cancer'.

That's what King Charles has had to suffer today. How much more detail about someone struggling with a diagnosis do we need splashed on every paper in every supermarket in the land.

Tallulahss · 06/02/2024 21:26

Yes it's private and he doesent need to but why specify that it's not prostate cancer? Either keep it a secret or say has cancer. Seems odd to say he has it but it's not that one!!!

TheFairyCaravan · 06/02/2024 21:26

People need to mind their own business. He didn’t have any symptoms. It was picked up coincidentally when they were treating him for something else so he can’t say “look out for x and y, because it could mean z.”

Kate owes us no explanation either. She’s been in hospital and is no recovering. End of.

I’m no royalist but they’re people and are entitled to privacy over their bodies and medical conditions as much as the rest of us.

MissAmbrosia · 06/02/2024 21:27

What possible right do we have to people's personal medical details, no matter who they are? If it was yours and someone shared the info without your permission, you'd be quite rightly upset!

Lantyslee · 06/02/2024 21:29

If I'd been diagnosed with cancer in the last couple of weeks I'd be feeling pretty shocked and worried and I imagine I'd want some time and space to process the news. I don't think he needs to tell anyone, although clearly there needed to be some explanation for cancelling engagements.

Maybe the treatment is different for the other cancer and if people thought it was prostate cancer he was being treated for, it would give a misleading view of treatment for it.

Because he went into hospital for his prostate and it was spotted at this time so if he didn't say it wasn't a lot of people would speculate that it was.

cakeorwine · 06/02/2024 21:30

So do people think his diagnosis and the publicity has raised awareness about cancer?

It will hopefully lead to articles in the media and discussions about different cancers and symptoms.

Then more discussion about accessing GPs, being seen by GPs, times from going to the surgery to being seen by a specialist to treatment starting.

Discussions about different survival rates around the country, disparities in cancers - we all know that certain cancers are more likely with certain lifestyles.

So discussion is good - to raise awareness

Exactly. The press and the hyenas should leave them alone. In the case of the King, he's probably still processing it.

StarlightLime · 06/02/2024 21:32

What does "awareness" actually mean? Everybody is already aware cancer exists, op.

I think the population is very aware of cancer.

pilates · 06/02/2024 21:34

It wouldn’t be enough for some if they disclosed where the cancer was. They would want to know what stage, life expectancy, etc, etc. He doesn’t owe us anything.

LadyDaisy42 · 06/02/2024 21:36

Perhaps he will share what type of cancer, further down the line once he's treated and on the other side of it all. It must have been a shock to get the diagnosis when he was in hospital for something else. And within a matter of days, he's had to declare this to the whole world. He will need time to get his head around it all. Maybe he will release further info at some point, maybe he won't. Either way, it's not for us to question his decision on it.

Allchangename354 · 06/02/2024 21:37

From what I thought the raising awareness and for people to check health was around enlarged prostate.

This is separate. They had to announce something as he is stepping back and cancelling things.

I don’t think anyone has the right to ask for any specific information about a public figure’s health beyond what they want to disclose.

Tinkerbyebye · 06/02/2024 21:38

It’s got nothing to do with anyone other than them. If they choose to share it it’s up to them.

Time everyone moved on

HK3444 · 06/02/2024 21:38

Despite them saying it was caught early it must be invasive bladder cancer at least if he’s receiving regular treatment for it

Don't try to dress up your being nosy as some kind of caring and concerned philanthropy. It's none if your or anyone else's business.
