Grandmother killed by 2 XL bullies whilst apparently separating fighting bully pups.

Longer jail sentences, minimum of 5 years for owners of dogs that kill people for not controlling them.

Thread has gone as expected, Cars, cats and collies compared to XL Bullies. And a bit of victim blaming.

ThePeaAndThePrincess · 05/02/2024 12:08

If these "dogs" are "allowed to follow their instincts", which are to kill and maim, then clearly they should not be in a residential area and in a home where a child lives.

The poor woman who was ripped to pieces tried to separate the fighting dogs with a broom because she was instructed to do so by their owner. The man who thought it was appropriate for a boy who had already been berieved of his mum to have to live in terror in a house with EIGHT of these dogs.

He should be prosecuted for child abuse as well as manslaughter.

Trying to blame the woman for doing what the owner told her to do is disgraceful. He knew the dogs were fighting each other already hence giving her this advice. He knew they were aggressive, so it was only a matter of time until they attack a human rather than each other. And he had his child living in the house, but still continued to illegally have these dogs there, breed them, put his child and any visitors and neighbours also at risk.

The people that have kept these dogs despite all of the evidence that they can turn at any second and kill children and adults are disgusting. They aren't just taking a risk with their lives but those of family and neighbours or random people who happen to cross their path somehow. It is unacceptable and anybody who thinks it's ok to put other people at risk for the sake of a pet has something seriously wrong with them.

ThePeaAndThePrincess · 05/02/2024 12:15

@CantDealwithChristmas yep. They are wolves, but worse in some cases like this "breed".

We need to come down much harder on all of this. People's pets should not inconvenience others in any way, let alone put them at physical risk. That's so obviously unacceptable that it's baffling anybody thinks there should be any kind of trade off here. Why should somebody else have their life impacted in any way by your pet?

There needs to be a very strict licencing regime for any dog owners. It will need to be expensive, requiring certified training, full enclosure all around the property with double barriers i.e. a very tall, robust wall or fence in addition to the doors etc (the poor man who was killed not long ago was killed by dogs that escaped through a window). Regular checks on this. No animals over a weight that a small child could not fight them off. No dangerous animals in a home where children live otherwise either dog removed and PTS or child removed into care of responsible adults. No dogs off lead in public places at all, only on fenced-in (registered througj dog licence) private property or in registered enclosed dog exercise fields. Dog licence fees to be set at a level to properly monitor and enforce all of this.

Enough is enough. The anthropormorphism is ridiculous. These are animals and if they pose any danger to humans then they should not be in human spaces.

SomeCatFromJapan · 05/02/2024 12:19

@bintybooboo doesn't it give you pause that the only breed you hear of being so protective of their puppies that they have to maul an adult woman to death is an xl bully?
Think of the vast amounts of puppies bred by people who don't know what they are doing, or backyard breeders. Yet no cockerpoo mother has ever mauled an adult to the point of death, no pug, no labrador.

Whoopaday · 05/02/2024 12:23

CantDealwithChristmas · 05/02/2024 11:52

Oh OK I had previously understood that police canine specialists used a tranquilliser dart then destroyed the dog off site, thank you for correcting me! :-)

That might be the case for a lot of forces if there is a dog contained in a house and you have time to wait, but the chances of having someone in the area whilst someone is being mauled to death is low. At the time it’s whatever you’ve got, even if that’s a shovel if you’re just ordinary response.

ThePeaAndThePrincess · 05/02/2024 12:35

I find the daily mail type outrage on here ridiculous. 'They all need to go'; they all need to be euthanised, shoot them all, owners of them are 'scum' 'thick' and the like.

Wouldn't it be fun to do a large statistically valid sample of IQ tests of XL bully owners and see what the average score is. I hope some journalist or researcher takes up your challenge. I don't think it's an outrageous hypothesis that the average would be very significantly below the 100 average.

It's fairly obvious already from the comments online and to journalists on the topic, but perhaps such a study would remove these wails of how "unfair" it is to "stereotype" people who are fulfiling the stereotype they apparently reject to such an extent that they are almost a caricature of it. Although I doubt many such people would be keen to sign up to do an IQ test and expose just how unintelligent they really are. I mean, these are people who continue to keep an animal in their house which could kill them or their children any time it feels like it. They are people with such a low level of capability for rational thought that they perceive other people pointing out how unwise this is as a great injustice, yet simultaneously they don't think it is unjust that other people are ripped to shreds and killed and horrific ways by their "pets" and can't comprehend that this is slightly more important than whether it hurts their ego to know that others observed that their intelligence is manifestly well below average.

Hereyoume · 05/02/2024 09:53

So much hysteria on this thread.

Dogs are animals, they have sentience, they behave like, well, animals. You cannot hold a person responsible for murder or manslaughter because a dog has killed someone. From the dogs point of view a person is just another animal, and animals kill other animals, sometimes for food, sometimes for territory, sometimes animals even kill and eat their own young.

If someone climbs a fence at a zoo and sticks their arm inside a tigers cage, we don't blame the tiger for ripping their arm off, we would all say how stupid the person was. But for some reason people don't seem to be able to apply the same logic to dogs. XL dogs are selective bread to be as big, strong and aggressive as possible, so it's not really a surprise that so many people are killed by them. It's like keeping a lion in your house. You know how cats like to play with toys and sometimes scratch an bite people, but a tabby isn't going to kill anyone, a lion however, behaving in exactly the same way absolutely would kill you. But they're both still cats. Same difference between a jack russel and an XL.

Blaming owners for a dogs behaviour is just nonsense, dogs are animals, they think for themselves. BUT, some dogs are dangerous, like some cats are dangerous, depends on the size of the animal. So a better solution would be to pass a law criminalising the possession of certain berrds who by their very nature are exceptionally dangerous, such as the XL.

So, let's say a MINIMUM term of imprisonment for anybody found in possession/ownership/control of known dangerous dog breeds. And all animals of type PTS, without exception. That way we could ensure the "extinction" of those breeds.

Remember, we actually allow people to train dogs to attack and bite people, and we pay them to do it. So it's a little hypocritical to ignore police dogs and their behaviour, but suddenly call for the imprisonment of "Dave" who's Alsation got a little bit over excited at the park and knocked a kid over.

Police dogs are well trained though. They bite certain parts of people on command. They also stop on command. It’s not mindless and uncontrolled. Their handler spends years training them and making sure they respond as they should.

Y6yhnsr5 · 05/02/2024 12:37

That's horrible. Ban those things already!!! FFS, how many more people need to die?

Emotionalsupportviper · 05/02/2024 12:41

ABCDEFGHIJK123456 · 05/02/2024 07:44

I'd add an additional sentence for the irresponsible owner who bred them. There were puppies there. It's been known for ages the ban was coming in. Why breed them.

Crack down is needed on these idiots.

Edited

It seems that other family members knew what breed these dogs were. It's a pity they didn't report these illegal puppies before someone was killed. Had the pups been taken away and euthanised (or at least confiscated so that he couldn't sell or otherwise dispose of them), and the owner prosecuted, this poor woman may still be alive, and that poor little boy wouldn't have had to witness his grandmother being slaughtered.

Even if every XL bully was destroyed scum like him would just move onto the next breed

BoobyDazzler · 05/02/2024 07:41

The owner looks like your typical XL bully owning scrote too, doesn’t he.

They nearly always do - it's just so depressingly predictable

Also why there's little point in ever more stringent laws, since too many who cause the real problems consider them optional

For me, the only thing that's likely to work is seizure of any of these things seen out without a muzzle. A risk to those seizing of course, but maybe stun darts could be an option?

oakleaffy · 05/02/2024 12:46

Schnauzersaremyheros · 05/02/2024 08:02

This poor woman was advised to use a broom to separate the puppies - with the parent dogs in the same room!

WTAF?! Of course the parent dogs were going to react to a perceived threat towards their pups 😡

Normal non fighting breeds don’t need separation when they are tussling- they don’t bite each other, they wrestle but there is no malice .
Fighting DNA pups fight to death and even decapitate each other.
Normal pedigree dogs wouldn’t have sperm donor and “mother “ in same premises
that’s sheer back yard breeder crap right there.

Because, until something happens to a loved one they'll convince themselves it's "the owner not the breeeeeeed" even now you'll probably have the family going it wasn't the dogs fault...

Yep. They're literally already saying that. To be fair having brought Poundland Ali G into your family probably indicates you haven't got much by way of common sense or critical thinking skills.

I'm genuinely angry and upset at this story and the absolute fucking fools defending these dogs. These dogs need to be allowed to die out as a breed. They by definition attract a certain sort of idiot owner. The rest of us need protected from them.

This poor woman and poor family. It is just a pointless waste of a life.

I was listening to a radio interview with DJ Spoony (who has an XL Bully) last week, saying the ban was crazy, his dog is 'the softest thing ever' etc. I wonder if he'll revise his opinion at all now. They all seem to be the 'wouldn't hurt a fly' type, until they attack.
They're bred to be aggressive, and also their physiology means that many are uncomfortable, if not in pain the majority of the time due to their mass being too much for their joints, plus breathing difficulties, so what you have is a ticking time bomb. When I'm in pain, I have a far shorter temper than not, so this, coupled with being bred for aggression is cruel, and highly dangerous.

And that's why it's perhaps pointless to ask "Why didn't the family report?"

Nobody denies this is an awful tragedy, but let's not assume that the rest of the family had any more sense than him

IWroteTheOther51 · 05/02/2024 12:55

I only know one XL bully. She belongs to a nice middle-class family who are passionate about large breed dogs - they have a cane corso as well. She's incredibly well-trained and looked after. She's not crazy about her new muzzle, but the law is the law.

The ban is a bit pointless - the criteria for identifying these dogs is so woolly and irresponsible owners will just move on to the next breed.

OpieMo · 05/02/2024 13:04

Doesn't matter how 'good' an owner is tbh. Good owners can reduce the risk of these animals reverting to their nature, but there have also been plenty of cases of XL bullies raised from puppyhood by excellent owners who have either eaten their owners or killed someone else. That's the issue with these dogs. Doesn't matter how good an owner you are. The chances of them following their nature and mauling or killing someone are still there.

Not to mention, people shouldn't have their lives dependent on whether a random stranger is a 'good owner' or not. There is no place in our society for that level of risk, for whether someone lives or dies while popping to the shops is reliant on how good the owner of that dog is. You will never eradicate bad owners, it isn't possible. I'd still like to survive, thanks.

Sad to see the news. Yet another nannying from that well-renowned peaceful, loves children, nanny dog breed.

Babsexxx · 05/02/2024 13:05

YANBU I am absolutely sick to death of seeing all these unnecessary deaths that are completely avoidable! I am however worried sick for scotland I joined some xl bully sites on sm just purely to see what was going on and what all these idiots where going to do keep them or get rid and the bus loads of them going up to Scotland was shockingggg!

Then not to mention the huge fallouts from people lying about the dogs temperaments! Plenty of upset from original owners pissing and crying because they have had there dogs returned even tied up to there front gardens etc it is absolutely ludicrous!!!!

Ive got a bloke on my sm who regularly updates photos of his unleashed unmuzzled xl on walks! Like he is begging to be reported! Maybe these idiots are actually waking up to them having these killing machines and low key hoping they will be reported/dog removed!

A golden retriever went for one of the vets throats just last week. They're quite often not as friendly as you'd think.

How did it manage to miss? If an XL or any other dog went for the throat you wouldn't be able to stop it, through the dog meaning it and it's pure strength. Golden retrievers can be twats but the power and intent is different behind them, they will never reach the same intensity a bloodsport dog will and they lack the same muscle. I think you must have an agenda, if you're someone who handles dogs every day as a vet helper and you would care to mention an aggressive golden but you've never felt the intensity of a bull breed when it's switched on and feel like mentioning that, I've felt it as someone who has had my hands on far fewer total dogs.

LimberlostLark · 05/02/2024 13:05

I really don't know why successive Govts don't stand up to the dog lobby.

To be fair, most people anti-bred ban are against it because they think it's a short term, ill thought out law that is long overdue a proper overhaul that does not result in weird anomalies such as puppies from the same litter finding themselves on opposite sides of the law - because of natural variation in leg length etc.

Most people wanting stronger laws want them because the current law is a short-term, ill thought out law that is not preventing dog attacks to the degree it should or could.

I am not sure there is a lobby that is anti any laws at all. (Except the hunting lobby who continue to succeed in getting their dogs left out of any real controls at all).

These dogs are extremely poorly bred, poorly raised and poorly trained. The result is a temperamentally unstable animal with immense power. It is both the shitty breeding and the training that has failed them.

I'm not defending them - they could all go tomorrow afaiac. But I do think until we rethink dog laws and put greater focus on owner qualification then we will see these dogs replaced with another breed within a very short few years. Take a Cane Corso and have career criminals breed a few gens, like the XL has been bred, and it will kill people (for example).

Successive governments haven't failed to take on the dog lobby (imo); they have failed to give enough of a shit to put time and effort into better, more rounded dog laws. The cynic in me says that's because it's not their 'kind' of pensioners and children dying.

Exactly. If my Italian greyhound ever went for me I know I could yeet it to the moon with one swift kick (I wouldnt, because she wouldnt!)

The thought of an Iggy being yeeted to the moon, spindly legs wheeling and big eyes 👀 and little ears flapping- 💕
An Iggy bite would be like being bitten by a mouse!

Babsexxx · 05/02/2024 13:06

Exactly THIS it absolutely is not our responsibility to worry about weather or not a dog is good or bad particularly with this killer breed!
