Food portions and how to laugh this off??

Help me dear mners, my dh is gaslighting me into accepting his penis portions and I need your stories of similar craziness to help me laugh it off..!

In laws came round, we had two large steaks for dinner. MIL wasn't keen on steak so we made her a stuffed pepper and sides so she was catered for and happy. FIL wanted half of one of the steaks, fine. Dh asked what I thought about that and I said yes fine we'll just share the rest. Dh looked confused for a bit and I said I think it's enough between the two of us to share the remainder.

FIL cooked the sides, DH bbqed the steaks (i was in with the baby), and I come out to see three plates of food. Two have half a steak on them and the third has a whole steak, which dh had claimed as his plate.

I was like ummm are you not splitting it? He said yes I did, and I kind of laughed in disbelief saying no you've given yourself twice the amount of food as me! He got really defensive, said this was what we agreed (not true), and got cross. I told him I was going to even things out, so cut off some of his, and he was so grumpy about it, saying he'd said he wanted a full one and I agreed to that. No "I'm sorry I misunderstood and under catered for you, let's split it like grown ups".

It is such a stupid little thing but keeps playing on my mind, what on earth was that?! Please tell me stories of similar imbalances that your partners have tried to get away with to help me put it into perspective.

OP has asked for other stories. My grandmother used to serve all the men first. My solution was to offer to be the person who handed out the food and made sure I gave the women theirs first!

Herdinggoats · 05/02/2024 10:17

When I used to stay at my ex-MIL my husband would always be given a beer with his meal, but I wasn’t allowed any alcohol because women shouldn’t drink, except maybe special occasions. 😂

Funny my ex MIL was similar, women were allowed alcohol but somewhat grudgingly 😂

Hi everyone! I went away for a day and now we're 500 replies in, talking about bowel cancer... and the post title has been changed?! Yikes.

Just to put a spanner in the works, in laws with us for dinner tonight again (its complicated, they're staying in our area for a few months so lots of meals together, some planned, some less so), and we were all well catered for.. UNTIL fil makes the comment "wow penisportions you're a real carnivore aren't you" with raised eyebrows..!

We're on the other side of the world from most of you lot, so it's late at night right now.

I hope someone told him it’s rude to comment on other people’s food! And I wonder how many times he’s had another living being literally living off him?

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/02/2024 10:46

Ooooooooooooooh no @PenisPortions thats not on...

'When you've breastfed a small human, you'll understand how much it makes you need xyz...'

'It is considered rather rude to comment on what others eat.... '

Did your DP apologise for being a twunt over the steaks? Does he accept he was a twunt at all?

MiL tried that game about 25 years ago. We were staying the weekend and on the Saturday morning planned to have a late breakfast of bacon rolls. There wasn't space for all the bacon in the pan so she did DH's and FiL's first and, just as I was expecting mine and hers to be started, she said 'I'll just make the men another one before we have ours'. Having stood by while they stuffed themselves with bacon roll, I was so hungry I let out a loud yelp, like a dog that's had its tail stepped on, and 'the men' were shouting at her that they were happy to wait. Glad to say it never happened again.

shearwater2 · 05/02/2024 11:01

Fucking hell, what you do in that case is keep the bacon warm in the oven while you do a second batch and then everyone can eat at once.

Blamethrower · 05/02/2024 11:05

'Yes Dear FIL and you're an arsehole...more steak?'

Handyweatherstation · 05/02/2024 11:08

@shearwater2 I know, it didn't make sense!

There's loads of risk factors for bowel cancer though.
Red meat, processed meat, not getting enough fibre, being overweight, drinking alcohol/smoking/being inactive and even the typical western toilets, squatting is considered much healthier!

So there could be loads of other factors at play in the diet, it might not simply be the red meat or processed meat, it could be the rest of the diet that is having a huge impact especially if the person is not eliminating the red or processed meat efficiently due to low fibre, poor digestion due to being inactive, western toilets etc.

I eat plenty of red meat but I don't really eat processed meat, I get plenty of fibre, I've always been slim, I don't drink or smoke, I'm active and I have a stool for the correct toilet position 😅so I would imagine my risk is pretty low compared to a lot of people.

Edited

It's great you are healthy, but eating red meat remains an independent risk factor for bowel cancer (ie when you account for other factors such as some of the ones you listed, it still increases cancer risk). Your risk sounds pretty low from your lifestyle. Correct position for going to the toilet is great, as it reduces constipation and other functional disorders, but is not associated with lower cancer risk.

Just say with wolf-like grin: “ Yeeees! All the better to EAT you!”

TippiHedrin · 05/02/2024 11:44

If you're sharing steaks you need to slice them all and serve them like they're supposed to be like that (e.g. on noodles, warm steak salad)

Is there any other kind?

My parents like to tell me how, aged 4, I cried inconsolably after noticing that my dad had been given five dumplings with his stew compared to my measly two. Their explanation that dad was bigger and needed more food did NOT wash with me. Dumplings had to be redistributed, I ate them all and my mum never did that again!

DH wouldn't dare eat the last of something without offering it to me first. It happened once and all hell broke loose! I'm currently pregnant and ravenous, and he's always offering me his food now. He does eat a lot more than me normally though. We call him the walking bin 😂

That made me laugh. My own DD is the same. She'd bite your arm off for more dumplings. Now I just make 3X the standard amount so everyone gets plenty. She takes more than her dad now that she's 17. He's 'meh' about dumplings so doesn't want as many. Dont even get me started on her and roasties. She's pretty slim too.

I can sort of see why the person cooking would want to be finished doing everyone else’s before making their own, so they could sit down and relax, but definitely yours should have been done before “the men” got seconds!

It’s down to knowing what everyone regards as “the best bit” and making plenty of that, or if it’s in limited supply, distributing that bit fairly. Bigger people can fill up on the bits less in demand.

Often it’s the meat aspect of a meal, but if it’s dumplings then it’s dumplings.

My much younger female cousin used to have such a thing for roast potatoes I remember my uncle (in law) rightly always making sure she had plenty as a child. It was a revelation to me as I’d been used to the “dad gets the first pick” style. I always make sure my own children get the bits they like of a meal!

Also I think it’s really important girls in a family know they’re as entitled to their preference as anyone else.

Missingpop · 05/02/2024 17:50

jeeeeeeessssuuussss what a sad existence you have if you have to write in & ask for similar stories to make you feel better about the fuck up over a bit of meat 🤦‍♀️

OldPerson · 05/02/2024 17:57

Why did you only have 2 steaks for 3-4 people?

YorkshireLucy · 05/02/2024 18:34

My husband hasn't had a job for 6 months (was made redundant). He starts a new job soon.
While he was not working, he did the weekly food shop whilst I was out at work.
At the weekend he said "so what day are YOU going shopping next week". I laughed and said I wouldn't be doing the food shop every single week anymore (happy to do my fair share though, lkke every other week) He replied with "you will give me a few weeks off though won't you?". I told him he'd had 6 months off!
Previous to this, I have been the main food shopper for almost 20 years. Apart from a few times, I was maybe too sick to go 🙄

JoBrandsCleaner · 05/02/2024 18:45

If he’s gonna do things like this, in future you’ll have to do that thing where he plates the meals up, but then you choose which one you want 😏
