Food portions and how to laugh this off??

Help me dear mners, my dh is gaslighting me into accepting his penis portions and I need your stories of similar craziness to help me laugh it off..!

In laws came round, we had two large steaks for dinner. MIL wasn't keen on steak so we made her a stuffed pepper and sides so she was catered for and happy. FIL wanted half of one of the steaks, fine. Dh asked what I thought about that and I said yes fine we'll just share the rest. Dh looked confused for a bit and I said I think it's enough between the two of us to share the remainder.

FIL cooked the sides, DH bbqed the steaks (i was in with the baby), and I come out to see three plates of food. Two have half a steak on them and the third has a whole steak, which dh had claimed as his plate.

I was like ummm are you not splitting it? He said yes I did, and I kind of laughed in disbelief saying no you've given yourself twice the amount of food as me! He got really defensive, said this was what we agreed (not true), and got cross. I told him I was going to even things out, so cut off some of his, and he was so grumpy about it, saying he'd said he wanted a full one and I agreed to that. No "I'm sorry I misunderstood and under catered for you, let's split it like grown ups".

It is such a stupid little thing but keeps playing on my mind, what on earth was that?! Please tell me stories of similar imbalances that your partners have tried to get away with to help me put it into perspective.

returned to say:

4 people now having dinner which was meant for 2 so.

MIL was incredibly kind in refusing the steak, and ate a stuffed pepper
FIl was considerate and said he would only have a half.

What should have happened is:

All the lamb chops get cooked, I would expect there was 4 ? i.e. 2 per person
( for the next day or whenever )

and both steaks

Then everyone gets half a steak and a lamb chop.

Or

A take away is ordered for all.

and the steak is eaten another day.

p.s. does dh know breast feeding mummy needs extra iron / food because she is breastfeeding ?

*It is irritating though and it's really not funny now, just old and it's not satire, just tired. Any 'joke' where somebody isn't in on it isn't one.

Any thread about food is game for somebody to post about a 'week-long chicken'. Take no notice, most people ignore it now.*

You are right @LyingWitchInTheWardrobe, it is a very tired joke that always gets trotted out, I hate the snobbery and social blindness of it. No it isn;t a 'mental attitude to portions', some people can't afford fillet steak, some people do have to stretch ingredients out and make the protein last for several days. I grew up in a family of 6 where a chicken was made to last for days in different forms, I am on a pretty strict budget now. I have to plan and think ahead every meal and I make things last and get every ounce of goodness out of food and don't waste it.

The 'make a chicken last a week' joke or the idea that people are showing off or 'eating like birds' if they don't pile their plates up to the ceiling, is just a not very subtle way of having a dig at people on lower incomes - and sadly that is what is 'typical' of MN, not the old 'making a chicken last' trope, but the inherent contempt for anyone less fortunate.

I grew up half a ketchup sandwich for dinner poor but the week long chicken jokes and massive salads are not satirising the people you think they are, imo.

This really is quite a lot of convoluted nonsense to have backed yourself into typing because you don't want to admit that you didn't think about iron when you made your calories argument. Dare I say, it's rather undignified...

🙄 More than happy to admit that if I had to suddenly share 1.5 steaks between two because we had guests turn up unexpectedly I would omit to factor in iron levels in one quarter of a fillet steak. Even after your lengthy cautions around the issue, I expect I probably still won’t, should the occasion arise.

I really doubt many folks would think about iron in a quarter of a piece of steak,,,

Of course men need bigger portions, gosh everyone's portion size is squiffy these days and generally huge!

My husband eats like a bird.

I can easily eat him under the table (unless it's chocolate)

Moreorlessmentallystable · 04/02/2024 17:49

I would have never given my guests less food. You guys should have just cut up the 2 steaks and split it equally between the 3 people eating meat. Your husband was being selfish.

An extra misplaced sausage a day is what got me pregnant and in need of more calories in the first place.

😂😂😂

Yes, I rather suspect you wouldn't as well. After all, you're sufficiently wedded to the men need more calories idea that you didn't even manage to take into account that OP is breastfeeding.

givememypassport · 04/02/2024 14:59

This. What is it that mumsnetters dont get? a majority of men need more calories and therefore consume more food than women. Are many commenting defending the OP overweight? Genuine question.

So do you think one steak is too much food for a woman? And any woman who would eat a whole steak must be overweight? Genuine question.

Sweden99 · 04/02/2024 17:57

Very few are having steak as the best way to get nutrition.
We could replace with cake and the dynamic would be the same.

Calliopespa · 04/02/2024 17:58

All I can say after reading this thread is thank goodness for the MIL and her ilk! 🤣 I’m beginning to see how and why she acquired her taste for stuffed peppers.

Zone2NorthLondon · 04/02/2024 18:09

ChedderGorgeous · 04/02/2024 02:06

I'm not sure of your issue. We normally make a medium sized chicken last for 5 dinners in a working week.

Full House! There we have it the mn magic chicken last 5 day and feed a family

DreamTheMoors · 04/02/2024 18:12

Do it like children.
Have one person do the dividing and the other person do the choosing.
Or perhaps make sure you have enough steaks to begin with.
I don’t recall my ex-husband ever sharing anything fairly with me even once.
Our divorce was an 1993 $85,000 (my attorney fees) nightmare.

Actually I did raise about factoring that in: scroll back.

Not wedded to the idea: simply mentioned it as a basis for tie-break on a one-off occasion.

And honestly one quarter less of a fillet steak at one meal really isn’t going to flip OP into needing intravenous iron or anything. The mcg values involved probably barely register over a weekly intake.

candycane222 · 04/02/2024 17:28

Read that as "could easily have eaten my husband" 😁

Yes, him too! Especially when he pissed me off.

CorpseBridesmaid · 04/02/2024 18:20

@InASnowGlobeSpinning Nope! Come to think of it I don’t think I’ve ever had a whole steak to myself! I did in a restaurant recently but I gave half of it to DH even then. I think I’ve just always thought men should get more meat 😅

But one meal where a man might get less calories isn't going to register either.
So for a one off occasion I'm not sure why you'd even look at any factors at all to decide who gets most, instead of just splitting it evenly.

Zone2NorthLondon · 04/02/2024 18:26

any mn thread about eating is a klaxon to the competitive under eaters to tell us how very little they eat, or indeed need

Only here we are also getting the teeth bared to grab it from a man at all costs - even if it involves near decimation of a cut of meat that is pretty tiny to begin with!

MumTeacherofMany · 04/02/2024 18:34

I'm a size 6 barely 8 stone woman and I'd easily eat a whole steak and sides! Buy more next time!

MumTeacherofMany · 04/02/2024 18:35

@Newnamepleasee definitely not true. I easily eat more than my DH who is 6ft 4 and weighs twice what I do! I have a high metabolism and really enjoy my food.

I am sure you will all rush to tell me that you don’t give a fuck but FWIW and as you’re all here it’s:

LESS food
FEWER calories

please.

One quarter less of a fillet steak isn't going to make the DH suffer from malnutrition either, if you're going down the batshit hyperbole road. The calories involved probably barely register over a weekly intake.

Wow so many women think men are the prize, it is sad.

As someone who is healthily at the lower end of a healthy bmi I can say that you can enjoy a high calorie mean now and again, not every day even has to be balanced, it can balance out over a week. Men do not have to eat more at every meal, they could say eat more protein at breakfast and more carbs at dinner etc etc. Only takes a tiny bit of imagination.

It seems really stingy not to let a breastfeeding woman have the bigger piece of steak tbh
