We'll have to sell in a couple of years when I retire (early granted). Can't afford it on a pension.

But we know house prices vary hugely between different areas.

Isn’t it more useful to look at size of house (number of rooms) to council tax?

The bands are set relative to house prices in that particular LA. So a I bed flat in London and a 1 bed flat in Hull will both probably be Band A even though you could buy a huge detached house in many areas for the price of the London flat…

It’s relative.

LazyGaaGaa · 04/02/2024 00:19

£280k (bought 15 years ago for £150k)
£1,800

Comedycook · 04/02/2024 00:21

Council tax seems absolutely huge outside of London.

Imnotabigbeliever · 04/02/2024 00:22

£3500 value £500,000
Yet our neighbour worth £1.5m + is less 🤨

Growuppeople · 04/02/2024 00:24

i rent but it’s the same, around 3000

Jeannie88 · 04/02/2024 00:25

Part of the disparity is residential vs business rates. Westminster is low because they have tons of businesses paying bus rates. So residential council tax can be lower. Not because other areas are subsidising council tax there.

And they empty the bins and recycling every day of the week.

Wandsworth is even cheaper I think.

literalviolence · 03/02/2024 23:44

when did you buy OP?

What's buying got to do with it. The council tax is the same for my rented HA property as is it for my friends next door which she bought. (£250K and £1,866 CT )

Growuppeople · 04/02/2024 00:37

Lucky? That’s 2136 so same as everyone else nearly 🤔

Growuppeople · 04/02/2024 00:38

Just wondering why buying makes any difference?

DahliaMacNamara · 04/02/2024 00:38

Current value circa £270,000. £1700 (Band B)

Mementomorissons · 04/02/2024 00:39

I will win this one. I pay £2411 and house is worth £150k

Diamondcurtains · 04/02/2024 00:41

Ours has been band D since we bought it almost 20 years ago. We’ve extended it twice. Probably worth about £450k now (in the south). I think the council tax is £1895, or it was last year, haven’t had the bill in fir this year yet.

AlltheFs · 04/02/2024 00:43

We’re in Rutland which is extortionate for council tax.

Small 3 bed cottage, £2417 band D. Current valuation around £450-500k

Lifebeganat50 · 04/02/2024 00:44

£425k , £3300,2nd highest in Scotland🙄

The business rates should go to a countrywide pot - residents get the benefit of employment opportunity imo

egowise · 04/02/2024 00:49

My house is band 'h'. It's extortionate

NauseousNancy · 04/02/2024 00:49

central Scotland, house worth about 320k. £2580 a year.

Swizzlersandtwizzlers · 04/02/2024 00:55

I feel mine is similar if I don’t have the single person discount. I pay around £1200 a year and the flat I’m in is worth £180,000.

So I guess without the discount it’s about £1500??

I agree it’s an unfair tax.

pussilinamorus · 04/02/2024 01:02

315K, Band D, 2,085.82.
I fucking hate council tax!
Also most of the money isn't on emptying bins etc etc as people believe but it goes on 'social care'... which if you're in a deprived area is a money suck with many consuming but very few contributing.
20% of Councils are on the brink of bankruptcy, let's see what happens then.
