Due to changing work commitments, DH and I are looking at hiring a TA from a local primary school to do afterschool pickups, care and tutoring for our two children. DS 7 and DD 9. DS is autistic and she has great SEND experience with a child at the school.

The TA is a trainee teacher at university. She actually used to be our cleaner so we know her well and the kids like her.

We need her approx 3-4 days a week from 3:30-5pm. She will collect the kids from school in her car, do some tutoring and homework help then ideally I'd like her to do a bit of ironing or have a tidy/straighten up before we get home.

She has said £15ph but DH is saying this is too much for a babysitter? I am not sure as we have paid £10ph for a babysitter before but obviously you don't ask a babysitter to tutor, tidy and pick up your kids for you? It sounds good to me but I need help convincing DH.
Thoughts?

Well done OP.

As I said - if you want this to work and have some longevity, if it seems like it's working out, make it so she really enjoys it.

Your DC will too x

Workwhat · 03/02/2024 14:47

It's not a babysitter role and your dh is a cf.

Thanks all. Have sent her a message and hired her, ignoring DH. This was the price she told me and I've not mentioned any housework. Very pleased

I'll bet you are!

PaulCostinRIP · 03/02/2024 14:49

I'm surprised that it's ONLY £15!

I wouldn't expect her to do any household chores whilst she is being responsible for your children and tutoring them.

That would be extra. At least £10 ph extra making it £25 ph which your tight arse husband will faint at.

Barone245 · 03/02/2024 14:49

Just saying I did not set the price at £15! I asked her the rate, she told me and DH was the one who objected when I told him. I was more than happy with it and honestly needed some ammo from you all so thank you

Wow I’d have said about £20 ph!! £10 is very tight and you’re so so lucky to have someone like her, as rare as hen’s teeth!

You've still not addressed how she's going to collect your children from school while also doing teacher training? Confused

Even if you just consider her current TA job, she's not going to finish at the same time at the children. Staff meetings / training and even general tidying up means TAs don't finish until quite some time after the children have left.

StrawBeretMoose · 03/02/2024 14:50

Gosh your DH is tight! I am not a fan of tightwads.

I thought you’d say £20 per hour. We pay babysitters more than £10 hour, same goes for cleaners
The value such an arrangement would add to your family is huge. I’d pay more and make sure she feels valued.

WetTowelsWillRemainOnFloorWhereTheyHaveBeenLeft · 03/02/2024 14:50

It’s Wimmins work, therefore deserves a pittance in your DH’s eyes.
He is a cheeky fucker extraordinaire.

Why doesn’t he:
a) do a full days work
b)knock off work early, drive to school to collect the probably (as pp pointed out) frazzled kids
c) get them in the car, drive them home, get them & their stuff out of the car.
d) get them to hang up their coat & bag. All whilst smiling.

e) give them a snack, tidy up after it
f) persuade them to start their homework then sit with them and give skilled, knowledgeable, experienced time & patience whilst child does it
g) worry about how and when the ironing 🙄will get done whilst sitting with child
h) roll up sleeves and sprint through the ironing

Is she allowed a cuppa or will she have to wait until she leaves?

I suppose the whole point of an anonymous forum is that it opens your eyes and you see another side of people’s lives but honestly, £15 ph for all that, with the added plus that your children are very familiar with her, is astonishing to me. You don’t know how lucky you are to have come across her.
At the same school, too.

Your DH is on cloud cuckoo. You seem sensible though!

WetTowelsWillRemainOnFloorWhereTheyHaveBeenLeft · 03/02/2024 14:51

As someone else pointed out, I pay £15 for cleaning. It’s nothing like the responsibility of caring for a ND child, and facilitating their learning.

Wednesdaysphiltrum · 03/02/2024 14:54

She has said £15ph but DH is saying this is too much for a babysitter

Your husband is a dolt 🤦🏼‍♀️

PinkyFlamingo · 03/02/2024 14:57

How can she be at university doing teacher training, work at a school as a TA and now be able to collect your children at 3.30? She will have placements in schools to as part of her course

HarrietStyles · 03/02/2024 14:59

Ask your husband if he could do his current job whilst simultaneously ironing a basket of his bosses clothes and cleaning the office.

Whilst thinking that since you're paying her that much she needs earn it by doing ironing etc as well.

Wellhellooooodear · 03/02/2024 15:01

It's not babysitting though. Babysitting is what you ask your teenage neighbour to do once in a blue moon. Your DH is ridiculous, and a tight arse to boot.

Zippedydoodahday · 03/02/2024 15:04

Sounds like a total bargain to me. But don't ask her to do the ironing. That's unreasonable as she is a childcare professional and you'll risk losing her to someone that respects that more.

Neolara · 03/02/2024 15:05

I'd bite her hand off at £15 / hour.

Is DH happy to earn less than £15ph? Or does he earn more?

Jf20 · 03/02/2024 15:10

Neolara · 03/02/2024 15:05

I'd bite her hand off at £15 / hour.

I guess it depends on context. I’d tell her to jog on.

MrsDoubtfire123 · 03/02/2024 15:11

I think she should be charging minimum £20 per hour and NO household chores ! The caring for your children and tutoring is enough. I hope she finds someone who knows her worth … because you and your husband clearly don’t😞

Jf20 · 03/02/2024 15:11

Fair play, I think that’s fine, especially as you didn’t try to lump the housework in.

Hooplahooping · 03/02/2024 15:21

Agree with everyone that say 15 is very inexpensive for quality, SEN experienced, care for two children.

are you paying her extra for her car use?

legalseagull · 03/02/2024 15:33

Jesus I pay my cleaner £15 an hour. I'm consider that a bargain for a tutor, even without the other stuff!

legalseagull · 03/02/2024 15:35

Also please don't ask her to clean / iron. That's so rude.
