To be furious at Brexit checks 'price you pay to be sovereign again'

Andrea Leadsom saying barrier checks are the price of sovereignty.

This is not what they promised, is it? The bare faced lies of it all. They've delayed introducing checks because they knew they couldn't square it with Leave campaign promises. In the end, the issue of NI was only solvable by these checks.

This is supposed to cost £330m a year. It will make food more expensive and supply less reliable. There is zero, absolutely zero, benefit to the country. It's just a direct detriment imposed because they can't accept the whole thing is a fuck up.

They never actually express what this sovereignty is supposed to do for us, or what was problematic about the EU rules. It's all on 'the principle of the thing'. Sovereignty won't feed hungry children, will it?

I think I'm just as piping mad about this as I was in 2016 - they're taking the whole country for fools.

UK minister: Brexit checks ‘price you pay for being a sovereign state again’

Andrea Leadsom says businesses experiencing ‘some friction’ should ‘adapt’ to changes in trade rules

There is a big differnce between trying to deter illegal migrants and sending German citizens back to their parents' countries just because they are not white.

Is there though ? how many of those people the UK Government was lining up for a flight to Rwanda were white ?

No European country wants non-white migrants which is why they are voting for the far right in vast numbers.

Can you name one European country apart from the UK that does not have a far-right party in government?

Yes I’m not sure Australia fits the bill. They have a Labor gov, the deter policy and people just vote for it on bi partisan basis

I prefer to say that Suella Braverman is not my cup of tea.

No. If I remember right it's Boris Johnson

Ah Boris...

Well, quite a few would have been until our government struck a deal with Albania.

Republic of Ireland. It is hosting tens of thousands of Ukrainians together with thousands of IP applicants (International Protection). There is nowhere to house them and many of them (IP) are living in temporary tents. There are rumblings that the numbers will have to be looked at and some accommodation centres have been subjected to arson. The pressure on the Government to sort it out is heating up.

There is no Far Right party there, not to mention in Government. But it's only little old Ireland, the land of the thousand welcomes and all that. (I have Irish heritage).

Maybe they'll send them to Rwanda?

Who knows where they will send them.

More from Leadsom back in 2016

We've already had that link earlier in the thread - much of what she says in the article was in response to scaremongering by the Remain campaign;

[Leadsom] says the situation is "nothing like" the "systemic crises" of the 2008 global financial crisis or 1992’s Black Wednesday.

... I don’t believe any emergency Budget is needed. Unfortunately I think it’s a tactic in the campaign to try and scare people into voting to stay, which I think is a great shame because it’s not an honest reflection of reality."

Pressed on whether she believes Brexit would have any short-term impact on Britain's economy, Leadsom replies: "Nobody has a crystal ball and if there is a short-term economic impact we have to say, 'What does that mean?' What it normally would mean is that sterling might go down, and if sterling goes down, that’s great news for exports...

After the riots the other month, I remember a boxer saying that he was going to set up a far-right party, so they might soon be one in their parliament (I meant parliament, not govenment in my earlier post, obviously).

No where near in Aus either. But they sorted it decades ago and citizens are happy enough for all parties to get its madness to go back

Thanks for the selective c&p, I have read the aricle.

You conveniently missed out

So my best expectation, with my 30 years of financial experience, is that there will not be an economic impact."

Probably popped back home because Albania is a safe country.

There is no Far Right party or much support for it . There are obviously pockets of support and it was this that fomented the riots in Dublin. Nothing more came of it. No one set up a FR party, there is no MP equivalent in the parliament at all, none. There are those who are trying to drum up support, but it's not happening.

I think you might be referring to Conor McGregor who is MMA not a boxer, but anyway he is seen in a very low light by many. But no doubt he has supporters from the young, angry and disaffected due to his aggressive and violent sporting prowess which has led to him being a very wealthy man. He is trying to suss out his candidacy for President, not parliament. That is Head of State with no powers. But then again I heard that Gerry Adams was thinking of having a go too.

Mary down the road would win if up against those two!

Not safe for everyone seeing the UK granted asylum to 334 Albanian nationals in 2022

Dymaxion · 31/01/2024 21:35

1.6m is a tiddly fine, that's a seriously disappointing jackpot on the lottery figure !
It's always the way though isn't it ?, things not going so great in a country, the Government has two standby options

A. Blame the previous incumbents - this one is tricky for the current lot given how bloody long they have been in charge.

B.Blame immigrants, nice and easy this one, unless people start to realize what your record is on this, in which case go to blaming a tiny proportion of immigrants for absolutely all the countries ills. I reckon we can add pot holes to their many misdemeanors if we think long and hard enough ?

And the farmers in Germany and Netherlands.

Why are all these farmers revolting if the EU is so great?

The EU isn’t perfect, and of course no one within it is going to agree with everything all of the time. I’m not sure how many European citizens would actually vote to leave it though. It’s more beneficial to be in ,taking part in decisions and taking advantage of the ease of trade etc .

cakeorwine · 31/01/2024 21:41

I see the siren has gone off.

Johnson was tweeting about 70 new trade deals this morning.
He "forgot" to mention how many of those were roll overs.
He forgot to mention how the EU seemed to have a perfectly good deal with Canada and the issue with treated beef is not an issue for the EU as they negotiated that.

But we aren't allowed to talk about it.

Still - I am sure that imposing friction on goods entering the UK from our nearest neighbour is just one of those things. Some businesses might just say it's not worth trading with us, some might just add on extra costs.

Crossing the Channel is going to be more interesting with the new checks - taking control of their borders.

Immigration - well we have all seen how net migration is, we know that net migration will always be a positive number, so we are always going to be having more people enter than leave - so a bigger population.

couiza · 31/01/2024 21:42

Dymaxion · 31/01/2024 21:25

@couiza how is the general housing issue over there in Ireland ? is it like the UK, a bit broken anyway ?

It is bad for those trying to buy for the first time. Prices are out of reach of many, leading to adults living at home far longer than they want to. Similar I suppose to UK. Rents are crazy also. Legal and war refugees, together with asylum seekers (IP) are squeezing the available accommodations till it squeaks. There is just not enough available for those who need it. I think the situation will deteriorate as Ireland is told to expect 15k immigrants every year going forward. So if there isn't enough accommodation now, there will be nothing very soon! But there are elections next year, so guess what? Things will happen.

So It is pretty much similar to UK, but I'm not sure if the immigrant issue is causing as much pressure on housing in UK as it is in Ireland. Of course those who already own, or are trading up are in a good position. The housing market is still very buoyant and houses are flying out the door, in the right areas of course, and especially in the big cities, where much of the global and indigenous industries are sited.

Well I didn't vote for this shit fest. It was the white working class uneducated that mostly fell for the lies. They loved Boris because he was "a good laugh" and Farage because he was photographed holding a pint of beer. Makes me fucking sick.

This in its entirety. Politics is a joke. Politicians know this too, but most of them are financially secure or set to benefit that they don't care.
