To be furious at Brexit checks 'price you pay to be sovereign again'

Andrea Leadsom saying barrier checks are the price of sovereignty.

This is not what they promised, is it? The bare faced lies of it all. They've delayed introducing checks because they knew they couldn't square it with Leave campaign promises. In the end, the issue of NI was only solvable by these checks.

This is supposed to cost £330m a year. It will make food more expensive and supply less reliable. There is zero, absolutely zero, benefit to the country. It's just a direct detriment imposed because they can't accept the whole thing is a fuck up.

They never actually express what this sovereignty is supposed to do for us, or what was problematic about the EU rules. It's all on 'the principle of the thing'. Sovereignty won't feed hungry children, will it?

I think I'm just as piping mad about this as I was in 2016 - they're taking the whole country for fools.

100% this OP. I too am still as furious about Brexit, and no, I won't get over it. 7 and a half years on from the actual referendum, and I've yet to hear a Brexiter offer an actual tangible benefit. Whole thing is the actual shower of shite those of us who were Remain always knew it would be.

Roussette · 31/01/2024 20:30

I have absolutely no idea what your point is Clavinova. The accurate figures speak for themselves.

Clavinova · 31/01/2024 20:32

A projected 41,000 Turing placements worldwide for 2023/2024 (please note 'projected') compared to 272,497 sent to just Europe in one year with Erasmus.

Not 272,497 sent from the UK - I don't care how many students Germany sends to Spain.

Roussette · 31/01/2024 20:35

Wonderful FOM.

Pelham678 · 31/01/2024 20:37

This was always the farce about the lies by Brexiteers that Brexit involved reducing bureaucracy. I was in Customs when we joined the Single Market. It was ridiculous the amount of paperwork required for moving goods. And now we’re having to do it all again.

I told everyone I knew but no one believed me. I think they will now!

Is that some sort of admission that your figures were for the whole of the EU - who cares how many students France or Germany sends to Spain.

People voted leave because they don't like immigrants. Nobody will ever admit it - ask anyone why they voted leave and it will be some crap about MEPs.

And now we're all having to pay for these people's bigotry and xenophobia.

I know loads of people who voted leave because the freely admit they don't like immigrants. It's to my great delight that they've replaced white immigrants with browm immigrants and nothing makes me happier than rubbing their racist noses in it.

No? I find it really odd you are trying to insist Turing scheme is just as good. It isn't. For very many reasons.

Roussette · 31/01/2024 20:49

I just want someone to point out to me an advantage. Without going into detail, there are only disadvantages that have affected us. No good things at all. Don't know of one. Can't think of one. Not changing my vacuum for a more powerful one any time soon. And I don't use the Dartford Tunnel (those were Mogg's chief benefits he came up with)

Just wait till Brexiteers have to apply for an visa soon to go to Torremelinos for their two week holidays.

@IMustDoMoreExercise "No system is perfect, but FPTP is better than most."

That is why no other country in Europe has FPTP, and why the UK is one of only two countries in Europe that do not use some form of Proportional Representation.

"Do you actually know anyone in France or Germany?"

As it happens, I do - having lived in Germany and in two other EU countries, and as I now live just 40 minutes from the German border and can see the news and follow what is happening there.

I know many Germans - and other Europeans. None can understand that the UK tolerates an electoral system that allows a party that obtained the votes of less than 30% of the electorate to have an absolute majority in Parliament. Few can understand why there are no alternative parties in Parliament, let alone in government Where I live, the government is made up of representatives from several parties, including the Greens. FPTP makes this impossible, giving most of the UK a bland choise between Dumb and Dumber. Even though the majority of UK voters voted for a party other than the Conservatives, they still had a majority and have been able to push through laws that are in no way beneficial to the country at large, all the while falsely claiming to be following "the will of the people."

I don't like the politics of some of the extreme parties - in the UK, Germany or anywhere else - but I see no sense in depriving myself of the option of voting for the party that best matches my views just because I don't like the views of someone else who might vote for a party that I don't approve of.

You actually live in Germany and don't see anything wrong with Jewish people and non-white people having to leave Germany because of the AfD????

You very conveniently ignored that part of my post. I suppose as long as you are white and Christian you are ok and it doesn't matter about anyone else, does it?

Oh yes - the right to sleep on the street in any member state;

2017
The European commission has said EU member states have no right to deport EU citizens for being homeless and said EU citizens had a right to live in other EU countries “irrespective of whether they are homeless or not”.

Roussette · 31/01/2024 20:57

I really don't want to respond to you anymore Clavinova, I don't want to be reported or banned. I presume you think being homeless is 'a lifestyle choice' echoing your favourite person SB.
I'll leave it there.

And when the AfD start re-patriating non-white and Jewish people, that will be ok will it?

Dymaxion · 31/01/2024 21:02

@IMustDoMoreExercise I thought there were big marches against the AfD and their rhetoric in Germany ?

There are. Of course, lots of people don't support the AfD, but with PR they have got lots of seats and have lots of power. That is why people are marching against them as they are so worried.

Haffiana · 31/01/2024 21:05

Like sending them to Rwanda, you mean?

And trust me, Jews in this country are also feeling that they need to be looking to go.

No. If I remember right it's Boris Johnson.
Do you remember how you used to insist he dosent lie? You had links and everything to prove how honest he was 😀

There is a big differnce between trying to deter illegal migrants and sending German citizens back to their parents' countries just because they are not white.

No European country wants non-white migrants which is why they are voting for the far right in vast numbers.

Can you name one European country apart from the UK that does not have a far-right party in government?

But not because the Tory government is trying to get rid of them. In fact, the Tory party is their biggest supporters of Jewish people amongst all the parties.
