To be furious at Brexit checks 'price you pay to be sovereign again'

Andrea Leadsom saying barrier checks are the price of sovereignty.

This is not what they promised, is it? The bare faced lies of it all. They've delayed introducing checks because they knew they couldn't square it with Leave campaign promises. In the end, the issue of NI was only solvable by these checks.

This is supposed to cost £330m a year. It will make food more expensive and supply less reliable. There is zero, absolutely zero, benefit to the country. It's just a direct detriment imposed because they can't accept the whole thing is a fuck up.

They never actually express what this sovereignty is supposed to do for us, or what was problematic about the EU rules. It's all on 'the principle of the thing'. Sovereignty won't feed hungry children, will it?

I think I'm just as piping mad about this as I was in 2016 - they're taking the whole country for fools.

UK minister: Brexit checks ‘price you pay for being a sovereign state again’

Andrea Leadsom says businesses experiencing ‘some friction’ should ‘adapt’ to changes in trade rules

More Brexit benefits-

Karen Betts, the chief executive at the Food and Drink Federation, said it had been in “quite insubstantial” discussions with government for months about what was a “very complicated and expensive way” of ensuring the full array of British products are sold in Northern Ireland.
She claimed the requirement would cost the industry about £250m a year and that the legislation would inevitably lead to a rise in prices for consumers.
“We think the transition to the new label is going to cost about £150m and then somewhere between £200m and £250m costs a year. None of our companies operate on wide margins. So if you introduce a significant cost, in the end, at least a proportion of that will have to be passed on to the consumer.”

Maybe Labour thinks it can attract that last 13% of people that think Brexit was a positive move.

But Brexit is the flagship policy of the Conservatives from the last decade. It should be their crowning achievement. Sunak was a Brexiteer from the start - he should be waving his Brexit credentials.

Instead they are hoping we forget all about it.

Maybe Labour thinks it can attract that last 13% of people that think Brexit was a positive move.

Why would they need that?

Why choose that percentage over the rest?

tallcurvey · 03/02/2024 09:49

@EasternStandard

you understand of course why labour don’t mention it at this time?

I hope you do.

So clearly you are not as politically aware as you claim to be?
I guess living in the States would mean that you miss out on a lot of UK stuff and UK politics.

You must be trying to insult another poster

I don’t live in the ‘states’

What’s with the aggression? Really poor responses

I can’t guess why the pp thinks it’s the case, on a forum it’s easy enough to type out views. I’m interested in why

I'm sorry - I got the impressions from previous posts that you lived in the USA?

Notonthestairs · 03/02/2024 09:58

Whoops - I'll try again.
David Frost -

We left the EU four years ago this week.
Sadly, with a couple of exceptions, no current minister acknowledged that fact.
Yet the Conservative Party owns Brexit.
Whether ministers like it or not, or maybe even wish it hadn't happened, it's the central policy of the party and the government. They must be prepared to defend and explain it - to show why it's so important that Britain is a proper democracy once again. For if voters come to believe that Brexit is failing then the Conservative Party will inevitably fail too.

Says it all really. Not even the government wants to celebrate Brexit.

Well in that case - I am sure you are aware then why Labour doesn't mention Brexit.

EasternStandard · 03/02/2024 10:03

Labour have mentioned Brexit

Quite a while back in fact to rule out SM / CU

Apart from ruling it out early which does stop them, with these polls as they are they could easily tap into the sentiment

It’s not a taboo subject btw, I’ve seen lots of posts on why and they are often not the same. There’s no presumption everyone thinks it’s due to the same reason

tallcurvey · 03/02/2024 10:03

@EasternStandard

if they say anything it gives an angle this desperate Tory party can poke at.

i think you knew that or I hope you did.

jeez

But that's basically David Frost doing the Tory thing of 'If I say something is so, that makes it so'.

i.e. 'Rwanda is a safe country' (but we have taken asylum seekers from there)
and now 'Brexit is a success' (it manifestly isn't)

EasternStandard · 03/02/2024 10:06

Why is everyone suddenly so concerned what the competition will do?

Posters spend threads linking polls over and over but at crunch point it’s a no we can’t someone might not like it

You believe in the stats enough to share them, why not believe in them enough for votes?

@tallcurvey

Edited

The Red Wall is fragile.
National polls versus local effects are different - who knows?

It is like egg shells - and a Tory Press who will do anything to attack and lie about Labour and Brexit

Notonthestairs · 03/02/2024 10:12

"Brexit is a success' (it manifestly isn't)"

Not even the Conservative Party thinks Brexit is worth cheering about. As he says it their policy.

DancingInBigCircles · 03/02/2024 10:13

Tbh, Tories lying is a tale as old as time. Particularly the extreme right wing cabinets of the past decade or so.
Shame on those who buy their lies/gaslighting/scapegoating and vote for them, and those who voted leave.

EasternStandard · 03/02/2024 10:15

The political dial has not moved on this

We’re going into a GE with two major parties committed to no SM / CU

There’s more movement on other issues than this. Maybe Labour know that many forgive the lack of action for reasons put here

Whatever it is all the polls and talk hasn’t moved the Brexit position

cakeorwine · 03/02/2024 10:18

"Get Brexit done" was the key theme of the last election.

Will "Make Brexit a success" , "Capitalise on Brexit" be a key theme this time?
They like their 3 word phrases.

BlastedPimples · 03/02/2024 12:58

3 word phrases means that their voters and Brexshit fans can manage to read and understand them.

EasternStandard · 03/02/2024 13:00

It’s funny because Labour tried to rehash Take Back Control at one point for councils or some farce

Not only using three words for voters who find it hard to read according to pp

But not even an original one

cakeorwine · 03/02/2024 13:03

BlastedPimples · 03/02/2024 12:58

3 word phrases means that their voters and Brexshit fans can manage to read and understand them.

Repeated use of a simple theme sticks in people's minds.

Psychology

Education, education, education

BlastedPimples · 03/02/2024 13:08

Yea. It does stick in people's minds. Unfortunately most of the people who voted for Brexit didn't bother to look beyond the 3 word slogans. Had they bothered then they might have educated themselves a bit better.

Education. Education. Education.

EasternStandard · 03/02/2024 13:11

Parties that use effective phrases do well

Blair was better at it than now for Labour - better than Starmer who bizarrely rehashed Take Back Control
