To be furious at Brexit checks 'price you pay to be sovereign again'

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/jan/31/uk-minister-andrea-leadsom-brexit-checks-price-you-pay-sovereign-state-again

Andrea Leadsom saying barrier checks are the price of sovereignty.

This is not what they promised, is it? The bare faced lies of it all. They've delayed introducing checks because they knew they couldn't square it with Leave campaign promises. In the end, the issue of NI was only solvable by these checks.

This is supposed to cost £330m a year. It will make food more expensive and supply less reliable. There is zero, absolutely zero, benefit to the country. It's just a direct detriment imposed because they can't accept the whole thing is a fuck up.

They never actually express what this sovereignty is supposed to do for us, or what was problematic about the EU rules. It's all on 'the principle of the thing'. Sovereignty won't feed hungry children, will it?

I think I'm just as piping mad about this as I was in 2016 - they're taking the whole country for fools.

@TheHateIsNotGood

don't the asylum-seekers that the UK proposes to send to Rwanda also have the ability to return to the UK once their application has been processed eventually? I believe they will.

No they don't, the Rwanda goverment will decide if they qualify for asylum and if so they will settle in Rwanda, they will not be accepted back in the UK

Clavinova · 02/02/2024 18:48

DuncinToffee · 02/02/2024 18:45

According to the government, the costs will be at least £330m a year.

It has calculated a cost of about £330m a year, and reckons this would push up retail food prices by 0.2% over three years.

Er - don't the asylum-seekers that the UK proposes to send to Rwanda also have the ability to return to the UK once their application has been processed eventually? I believe they will.

Anyway, Albania is pretty close to Italy, I've caught the ferry a few times. There is a saying "all the good Italian chefs are Albanian" and for bistro meals this could very well be true.

Hopefully, the UK will be signing a similar 'Albanian-style' asylum seeker agreement too; seeing as they've already agreed upon repatriation with much needed development funds too.

No they don't.

Rwanda asylum plan: who does it target and is it going to happen?

How does that compare to the 0.04% increase in GDP from CTTP?

Oh - and what about choice?
What if EU traders can't be bothered to export to us as it's too much effort?

Is there anything from the EU you'll miss?

(this is your chance to show you fun side).

I would miss Salami and Bratwurst

If the EU had accepted Albania as a member state you would have been happy staying in the EU?

I can only speak for myself - No.

So why did you agree with I was far more annoyed that the EU refused to accept Albania's application?

I have to admit it did surprise me to hear you say that

cakeorwine · 02/02/2024 19:03

Don't ask @Clavinova that question!

I don't think I have ever seen @Clavinova answer a fun question - it's just links I am sure there is a human being behind the posts - so I would love them to answer the question about what EU import they would miss if it was no longer available.

Maybe suggest something to export to the EU?

So I suggest - miss salami
Export - Lemon cheese. (from Lancashire)

GB News Rees Mogg floundering as a foodstuff exporter tells him how damaging Brexit has been to his industry.

I didn't think Rees-Mogg was floundering. There's a link to the farmer's X/Twitter feed - the farmer is quite clearly not an exporter - he's a fruit and veg wholesaler and importer (he has a supplier in the Netherlands, as well as his own farm and he supplies fruit and veg from the local Kent area). Checks on fruit and veg from the EU have been postponed until October.

The farmer/wholesaler's tweets are somewhat loud and exaggerated (you might call him an anti-Brexit campaigner as well). His claim at the start of the phone-in, that 'we' (he obviously meant the UK, not his company) are 'not allowed' to sell beef, lamb and fish to the EU is nonsense.

Notonthestairs · 02/02/2024 19:28

"Checks on fruit and veg from the EU have been postponed until October. "

Why?

DuncinToffee · 02/02/2024 19:33

Haha dismissing a farmer because he might be called an 'anti-Brexit Campaigner' Especially when he is being interviewed by an arch brexiteer Grin

I didn't - you obviously misunderstood my post.

I grinned because I implied that I didn't want free movement of people from Albania - before I saw the post from TheHateIsNotGood.

I was pointing out that the farmer is not an exporter - plus what he said about 'not being allowed' to sell beef, lamb and fish to the EU is clearly nonsense.

Phased-in gradually I guess - or perhaps the government are hoping to hold the general election beforehand.

Sadiq Khan intervened this month, claiming London’s economy, alone has shrunk by £30 billion

Sadiq Khan commissioned Cambridge Econometrics to produce the report.
I've just googled the company - I see they have an office in Brussels as well -where they carry out work for the European Commission;

https://www.camecon.com/news/new-brussels-office/

They have an office in Brussels and do work for the European Commission as well, therefore what they say isn't true. That's what you consider a reasoned argument? 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Why are countries wanting to join [the EU]?

Because they are poor and want to be net beneficiaries from the EU budget?

A complete mess? My husbands French friend who lives in France won't even vote because he is so upset about the state of his country. He is in his 70s so has seen it all.

Your husband's french friend not happy with state of France does not make UK not a mess. You must be a person who has all life soeted for you to not care. But there is incressed homelessness, crime, peoblems with NHS, doctors not paid decent wages, parients not getti g treatments in time, cost of economy crisis, Brexit impacting businesses, UK losing jobs, iconic brands being purchased by foreigh companies or shutting down, in addition to all the problems existing in rest of europe or World. There are people who cannot buy homes for high prices, and then those who someone managed to buy at inflated prices and now looking at their house losing value but mortgage bills almost doubling up. What kind of banana replublic it needs to be become before you can stop finding problems with other countries to defend but refusing to look at the fact that for majority living standards have gone down.

TheHateIsNotGood · 02/02/2024 20:12

I'm the pro-Albanian poster (left the thread due to caring responsibilities) so stop trying to score points on that basis. It's me.

I stand corrected if my understanding of Rwanda-style agreements excludes successful asylum seekers from returning to the UK; of course they should, ergo the UK would be best served by iniating a similar Albanian asylum seeker agreement to the Italian one.

As far as getting Stormont back in business, whatever it takes is fine by me. Neither RoI or UK wanted any borders since the GFA, even post-Brexit, unfortunately the EU behaved in an opportunistic way, like a bunch of fucking cunts, rather than give any credence to the efforts for Peace that had been made before and besides them.

Somewhat concreted my displeasure with the EU even further and cemented my view that it is a self-serving conglomerate of institutions that has little concern for its people.

Better out of it

Dymaxion · 02/02/2024 20:12

Who knows Brexit might have been avoided had Brits living in the EU been allowed to vote in the referendum (which actually concerned them.)

@Chouquettes I know ! that's what makes it even more infuriating !

They do quite a lot of work for the European Commission as far as I can see.

I could point out that they claim that Brexit will cost the UK 10% of economic wealth by 2035 and 3 million jobs - but you can argue that's not 'project fear' if you like. If there's a second referendum debate they are first on my list to offer up their report for scrutiny.
