If VAT is added on Private School Fees, then it will be added onto University fees as well

AgathaCrispee · 31/01/2024 08:06

Does it worry you that this new policy of adding VAT on educational fees will also be applied to university fees as well?

AIBU to think this will put university out of the reach of the majority of families who will support their kids through Uni?

Also, for those who do go the level of debt they will come out with will be really big.

If they can apply VAT to private school educational fees then they've setup a case for Independent schools argue that it must be applied to Uni as well.

Is this going to create a situation where only the wealthy can send their kids to Uni?

I'm wondering why no one is asking this question!!

Private schools currently have charitable status and so VAT exempt. Unis don’t. You are comparing apples with pears.

Erm yes they do. UK Universities have exempt charitable status

It's not scaremongering to ask questions.

We should all be asking questions of the people we want to govern us.

I'm a floating voter myself, but this is something we need an answer to.

Edited

Well, if it's not in labour's manifesto then you will have your answer that they're not planning on doing this. I hope you're planning on starting lots of threads with questions for the tories. I mean they have been in power and fucking the country up for ages so your questions to them can be about stuff that they've actually done rather than on imaginary policies that they haven't said they will have.

AgathaCrispee · 31/01/2024 08:29

I'll say it again:

Labout are not going after the charitable status anymore, thats misinformation. It would be difficult legally. So they're going to remove VAT exemption. This means that all educational institutions could be at risk.

My children are at state school and I'm worried about what this means if they go to university.

Do some reading, it's all out there in the public domain of what the plan is.

It's really concerning for all parents.

We need clear and concise statements from Labour as to the boundaries of this proposal.

of course you are. Christ, the Tories are getting desperate.

Don’t know why @AgathaCrispee getting such a pile on from some quarters.

All private schools are working on the assumption that they will no longer be exempt from VAT in the likely event of a Labour Govt and that they should prepare for this fairly soon in that new parliament.

a technical question about how applying VAT to one provider of educational services but not others will work in practice is hardly a goady post, it’s a legitimate query about how a big picture manifesto policy would work in detail.

Maybe I've been harsh. In the context of the ridiculous amounts of threads about this issues in recent days I am a bit sceptical of naive 'hasn't anyone thought of this...' posts (about policies that don't exist) when this is covered loads in all those other threads. It feels like MN is full of panicking parents of private school kids at the moment in full on attack mode. It's tiresome.

Vermin · 31/01/2024 08:33

@Lindaofoxford charotable status is irrelevant to VAT. Charities pay VAT for goods and services they buy which are VaT rated

MN HQ should do a VAT masterclass / q@a so people understand this. Or people could read up on it…

DinnaeFashYersel · 31/01/2024 08:33

You are barking up the wrong tree.

Aaaalrightythen · 31/01/2024 08:36

Wow to the "if it's not in their manifesto" rubbish; look at what we've had in the last decade and tell me you still believe that!? You think Labour will stick to pledges when they only have this as a vote winner and are relying on the fact everyone is just so sick of the Tories they'll get in? It's like we've learnt nothing from the false promises of Brexit, again.

I'm happy to suck up on private school fees but the university costs increase worry me. DC are looking at potentially 7yrs of further education each. I can't see how more people aren't worried.

SmashedPrawnsInAMilkyBasket · 31/01/2024 08:14

This is the answer. The proposal is to remove the spurious charitable status of private schools, a byproduct of which is that they will lose the exemption from VAT. It’s not a proposal to add VAT, but the removal of the exemption, an exemption which doesn’t apply to universities, so there is no correlation between their situations.

Exactly.

VAT exemption has nothing to do with private schools being charities. Some are charities, some are not. All are exempted from VAT. Labour did also have a policy of ending the charity status but they dropped it because it would have been too difficult to implement.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 31/01/2024 08:41

Most people don't actually pay their uni fees though...

People who "can't afford it" can't afford the accommodation and books etc because parents are expect to pay some support

Now if they said they were going to change the student finance system you could be more worried

You have no idea what you are talking about. VAT exemption and charity status are two completely different things. Some private schools are charities, others are not. All are currently exempt from VAT. Labour have dropped their policy regarding ending charitable status.

L1ttledrummergirl · 31/01/2024 08:44

Given that care homes pay VAT on some staff (domestics, cooks, carers) but not nurses, I see no reason why private schools are still VAT exempt. I will wait for the election to be called and manifestos published, before making spurious claims about candidates intentions.

No it’s not! Please do some research. VAT and charitable status are two different things. Labour have dropped the policy regarding ending charitable status.

Loving the flurry of panicked private school parent threads. So because nobody gives a shit re a privileged few having to pay more for a damaging luxury it’s now time to try scaremongering.🙄

dontjudgemeagain · 31/01/2024 08:49

WHAT IF LABOUR PUT VAT ON HAMSTERS???? WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS?

TiredCatLady · 31/01/2024 08:49

It would be utterly pointless putting VAT on school fees as “the rich” (as people on here seem to refer to anyone who sends their kid private) or their accountants will simply find a way to pay the fees through e.g. a business and circumvent the VAT. If a government is too thick to realise this is the case then…

Yep. It’s as if the command has come through from Conservative Central Office; “FFS, get onto the forums and pretend to be a concerned parent’

AgathaCrispee · 31/01/2024 08:52

I'm going to email the NUS and see what their take on this is.

I'll also send an email to the local Labour MP as well, see what their response is.

Be interesting to see what both say.

DON'T PANIC!
I've heard that Sunak will shortly announce that Hamsters will continue to be VAT exempt.

I was a floating voter but following this, those brave, morally upstanding Tories will get my vote forever.
