To not want to be sat near loud cackling women

What is it with groups of loud, cackling women these days? Third time I’ve eaten out recently and next to a table full of shouty, cackling women who seem to be in a contest of who can cackle the loudest. Doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s a posh place or not. I’m fed up of having to be sat near them whilst waiting for my food. Can’t move as we are in a table of 7. My three autistic children are completely silent! Feel like following my eldest child’s example and getting noise cancelling AirPods.

Disgusting!! Wearing what they like and eating and drinking what they want too!!
Scolds bridle all round is the only option isn't it for these bodacious women!!

Don't forget the haircloth. Boden Haircloth is very now.

CoffeeCantata · 29/01/2024 12:31

I'm 100% with you, OP. Cackling, schmackling - who cares? It's an English word and words are there for a reason. I know exactly the sort of laughter you mean and it only comes from drunk people who don't give a damn about anyone else around them.

I haven't had to endure this type of thing for years - I'm really careful about when and where I go on the rare occasions I eat out. I hate loud people and I won't have my evening spoiled by them.

We all know the difference between laughter and conversation and raucous behaviour. It's disingenuous to pretend otherwise. But I think a lot of the 'culprits' are on this thread trying to gaslight others into thinking they're the unreasonable ones!!! It's not working, though.

Fluffywhitecloudsinthesky · 29/01/2024 12:58

Well, if you leave your house, you can't control the noise around you in public spaces. There could be quiet, there could be cackling, there could be braying (men always bray), there could be lively people of all types. You can't control that unless you stay home. You can go to quieter type places, like cafes in the daytime, early evening for restaurants, but there's always a chance some people will come in in a group and have a fun time that is annoying to you.

I have a very loud friend who swears a lot (she veers between 'darling' and 'fuuuuuck' all the time) and also talks about sex quite often. I try to keep her quiet if we are in a local tearoom on a Tuesday afternoon, but it's quite difficult. People do stare, but I don't get stressed any more. She talks like this in her house, out of her house, it's not controllable.

So if you don't want to meet my friend whilst you are eating your scone, the only sure way is to stay home!

Do men ever cackle?

Of course not. All the football hooligans I have encountered sound like Welsh male voice choirs, singing in unison as they rampage through the town pillaging.

CantDealwithChristmas · 29/01/2024 13:26

Women should be silent in public at all times.

Perhaps some sort of Scold's Bridle could be fitted on persistent offenders.

I think there are quite a few on this thread that would be willing to sit on the jury and fit the bridle. Perhaps giving a refined yet joyful laugh as they do so (within permitted parameters of noise, obviously).

Yes they are - Sicilian men 😂

I see your Sicilam men and I raise you Greek extended families in tavernas on Easter Sunday afternoon

Women should be silent in public at all times.

And now you're just being silly...

Who on earth on this thread has said that?

I think it's more: people should consider the impact of their behaviour on others in public places. Women just happen to be the people the OP has had a bad experience with - of course it applies to everyone, and silence is not required - just good manners.

CrashyTime · 29/01/2024 13:49

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 28/01/2024 22:22

I think OP that you mean laughing and you say the word cackling instead because you are being unpleasant.

I think most people on the thread know exactly what the OP means, and know that it is a cultural shift that has happened in recent years, "Look at Me, I am out having so much fun!"

People of either gender should not enjoy themselves in groups and in public.

shearwater2 · 29/01/2024 13:53

Groups of people are generally louder than couples but some are noisier than others. I've seen loud shouty female groups, raucous men, and noisy mixed groups. Some are really tedious and take over, but at the same time maybe we've all been part of such a group and have bothered others without realising.

Yes we have all done it to a certain extent, but now there seems to be some sort of cultural expectation among certain types of people and age groups that you have to announce your presence and be loud on a phone or with a group wherever you go, it is a by product of social media and reality TV consumption IMO.

BassoContinuo · 29/01/2024 14:03

I think restaurants should be more considerate about placing smaller groups next to larger groups. It’s never a pleasant experience being a table of 2 next to a table of 12, as there is inevitably going to be noise and disruption from the larger table, however conscious they are of other people.

Not sure that would help the OP as she was in a fairly large party herself, but I’ve been out too many times where smaller tables were just fitted around the groups, I won’t go back to those places.

Mikimoto · 29/01/2024 14:21

At that "Music from the Musicals" special on tv last weekend, there were various small groups with their funny, funny deelyboppers on, screeching and standing up every time they knew a song, consequently blocking the stage for the 3 or 4 people behind them who'd presumably paid hundreds of pounds for their tickets. They no doubt cackle. too.

@CrashyTime, what's going on with the fonts in your posts?

Throwhandsupintheair · 29/01/2024 14:59

Some people are so miserable it’s untrue. Should everyone just be murmuring quietly about WW3 or WhatsApping their conversations instead?

Dont know, there are various theories from some posters about "hot keys" and apostrophe keys etc. Doing one block of text it doesnt happen, adding spacing etc. it happens, and only happens on here!

BassoContinuo · 29/01/2024 15:03

@CrashyTime I think it’s the apostrophes you’re using - somehow you seem to be using one that goes the opposite way to most people

CrashyTime · 29/01/2024 15:04

Oops, happened again! So much for that theory. LOL. Maybe I am just trying to draw attention to myself, maybe I should start cackling as well?

Weird. I'll always know it's you, Crashy.

(noticed my predictive text changed that to Trashy just before I pressed send!)

Hahaha, it's the cackling of MN, just like capitals are supposed to mean shouting 😂

I cackled a little at that. Luckily only the cat was here to see me 'performing' and the sound wasn't too shrill and cutting for her delicate sensibilities.
