annoyed woman wont move seats on train

Currently on the train with my 5 year old. There’s loads of individual seats but none together so I’m stood next to my daughter who’s sat down next to another woman.
AIBU to be a bit annoyed she’s turned her back on my daughter to avoid eye contact and hasn’t moved to another seat so I can sit next to my daughter?

if there were no other seats I’d completely get it but there’s loads of individual ones

OP posts:

She wasn’t even near my child. She started shouting at me as I walked past her as I left the carriage to put my DC’s soiled clothes in our suitcase outside the carriage. I was trying to make sure that there were no lingering smells inside the carriage. I was being thoughtful…

That’s inexcusable, awful behaviour. Neither I nor anyone I know would behave that way. I’ve actually helped people in difficulties on transport before, up to and including giving a man CPR on the tube.

The situation you describe doesn’t really have anything in common with that of the OP, which has been the subject of the discussion so far, though.

The reason I mentioned it was because a previous poster was taking the piss out of me because I said that I would not ask someone to move because I would be worried about how they would react and may get a mouthful of abuse. That wasn’t the first time I was abused on a train either!

ShouldIbeLeftWithLess · 28/01/2024 21:24

Posters aying the passenger shouldn't have to indulge the OP, well its not really for the OP is it? It's to accommodate the child. But God forbid anyone accommodates a child nowadays!

Also, posters asking why the OP didn't ask the woman to move, I imagine the woman instantly turning her back on the child answers that question!

This has been a sad read.

Kbroughton · 28/01/2024 21:25

I would always move if I could. Just like I let people go in front of me in the supermarket of I have a trolley and they have only a few items. It's just being kind. But not everyone is the same and if there's loads of individual seats I would move and ask someone else. I have medically diagnosed claustrophobia and I can't sit in a window seat as I have a panic attack! So that's the only time I wouldn't move if that was the only option as your child can sit on your knee. I would move and sit on the floor like a student if it was for a disabled or pregnant woman, old person though.

PeloMom · 28/01/2024 21:34

When I travel by myself I always get a seat that I like (reserve where possible). At least 75-80% of the time I’m asked to move and usually because of someone and their child. It gets old. And I do say a lot of ‘no’ as am fed up with that.
when I travel with my kid and there’s one seat, I either stand next to him or sit him on my lap (he’s a big almost 5yr old so not the lightest or most comfortable). His safety is more important so he has the seat; my comfort is optional.

2024NewyearNewme · 28/01/2024 21:49

Gosh, people are not kind when it comes to sitting on trains!

Men dragged into the row for no reason whatsoever 😂

Right? Even when a man doesn't have anything to do with it he's still wrong on MN. In my personal experience a man is much more likely to give up his seat, often without even being asked, than a woman is.

ilovesooty · 28/01/2024 19:52

According to some posters if you ask you'll get a mouthful of abuse..

A recipe for never taking action then.

OP?

She’s delayed due to cows on the line at Flax Bourton.

I agree. I rarely fly nowadays but it was the same on flights. I stopped agreeing after joining MN and reading threads and realising that loads of women were deliberately not paying for seats and targeting younger women to coral into a swap.

Yep, I am sobbing uncontrollably

paintitblue · 28/01/2024 22:56

So, it's a sort of train roulette, organised by a 5 year old? Whoever your 5 year old sits next to is the unlucky number who must offer to move, while you stand there and glower and huff and puff our hints to them to move?

Isittimeformynapyet · 28/01/2024 22:58

olympicsrock · 28/01/2024 12:14

Sounds like she was there first. If you didn’t reserve two seats together you don’t have a leg to stand on.
You can ask but she can also say no .

"won't have a leg to stand on" 😂🤣 Good one Olympic!

lanadelgrey · 28/01/2024 23:14

When I travel on trains now, almost all commuter lines so no reservations and often full I like to sit down next to the worst space hogger - the sort of person (usually male) who sticks his stuff all over the spare seat and scowls as everyone makes their way through the carriage looking for a seat.
But when I regularly travelled with infant DD as DM was ill, it was usually young nonwhite men who jumped up to change seats out of politeness.
i would always courteously point out I was going to feed DD so they may want to move. It was unfortunate if they didn’t. I wasn’t embarrassed but they were or got gently kicking baby feet. And were stuck 😂

Meanwhile, my partner has left a cup in the sink without rinsing it .

I put some milk back in the fridge even though there's not enough left in it for a single cup of tea.

Now I'm sitting here annoyed with myself, just knowing that it's there.

Ask a man to move. Women are always expected to be accommodating. It gets wearing.

Spot on comment.

Maybe the woman was ND and didn't want to engage? There could be lots of reasons. OP and a child does not trump anyone else's right to the seat they chose.

That is grounds for you OH to divorce you!

Suchasonganddance · 29/01/2024 17:44

Frankly I think you are being extremely unpleasant standing by this poor woman huffing and puffing. And teaching your daughter to feel entitled.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 29/01/2024 17:46

She could go on your lap… like people used to do. Your daughter isn’t even paying full fare

RiseAgainMum · 29/01/2024 17:49

I don’t think I would have given the seat to my daughter. I’d have her on my lap sideways and swivel her legs away from the aisle. If it annoyed the other passenger she has a choice of moving.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 29/01/2024 17:51

Also I ain’t giving up a window seat

Airspice · 29/01/2024 17:51

I just think this is rude, what’s happened to common decency and kindness? I absolutely would move to a single seat so this woman could sit next to her child, even though I would prefer a window seat. It’s just being nice!

Huffing and puffing like a dragon is nice?
