annoyed woman wont move seats on train

Currently on the train with my 5 year old. There’s loads of individual seats but none together so I’m stood next to my daughter who’s sat down next to another woman.
AIBU to be a bit annoyed she’s turned her back on my daughter to avoid eye contact and hasn’t moved to another seat so I can sit next to my daughter?

if there were no other seats I’d completely get it but there’s loads of individual ones

I'm dying that people are actually trying to make being a dick to a mum with a young child some kind of feminist statement😄

Decent, well brought up people would move without being asked. You're not going to get a normal range of opinions here because on this website the idea of showing pregnant women or mothers with small children etc any kind of consideration or grace really winds the weirdos up. I hope you encounter some better brought up people in the rest of your journey OP x in my experience travelling pregnant and with a young child, most people are decent and helpful.

How is minding your own business just sitting in your seat 'being a dick' exactly?

Quite. Let's not forget nobody even ASKED "the dick" to move.

Don't you know that it's every woman's duty to constantly think of how she can make life more pleasant and comfortable for others around her? Random train woman is failing at this.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 28/01/2024 15:34

I’d have sat mine on my lap at that age

comeagainx · 28/01/2024 15:34

Decent, well brought up people would move without being asked.

Why? There are other single seats available and a child can sit on a persons lap.

The adult is perfectly capable of asking and it's not unreasonable to assume they'd ask if they wanted to.

It's totally different from say a person with crutches, when I agree a decent person would offer up a seat or move from an easy access seat without being asked.

This is daft. Besides, when I was a child (and brought up in a 'decent, well brought up' way as you put it), I was taught that a child does not sit when an adult is standing! I was taught from a young age that I should not occupy a seat if an adult is standing - and not just old/infirm.

Crackoncrackerjack · 28/01/2024 15:36

Op lit the touch paper and is well gone. Train journey probably finished ages ago

crumblingschools · 28/01/2024 15:36

Why did you choose this particular person to sit next to?

New2024 · 28/01/2024 15:37

If she’s in the window seat you’ve blocked her in so asking her to move would be your only option. The more logical thing would be for someone else sitting next to an empty seat to move for you.

Crackoncrackerjack · 28/01/2024 15:38

Wind em up and watch em go !!!!!

SweetBirdsong · 28/01/2024 15:39

ShouldIbeLeftWithLess · 28/01/2024 13:55

You shouldn't single out one person but I do find it sad that not one person has offered, particularly as they aren't reserved seats. Disappointing to see that so many posters clearly wouldn't move either.

Why should anyone give up their seat that they have paid good money for, so the OP could sit down? Why did the OP's 'needs' trump the other woman's needs? Confused

PaulCostinRIP · 28/01/2024 15:39

She's five not a newborn.

Underhisi · 28/01/2024 15:41

Waiting for the other woman to post.

Train travel is expensive and not always very pleasant. Understandably in my view people don't want to be inconvenienced when they're already sitting in their seat.

Exactly. Saying someone is a dick if they don't move for a women with her child is just rude, offensive, and plain ludicrous. 😆 FFS, entitled much?! I have a child so give up your seat. Errrr, no love! I paid good money for this jog on!

No need to snipe at people's upbringing because their opinion differs from yours.

Reminds of that story about Vogue Williams not pre-booking their seats then expecting people to move for them.

Branleuse · 28/01/2024 15:48

your feelings are your feelings, and if youre annoyed thats fair enough, but you dont have a right to sit in her seat. On a busy train youre lucky that you managed to get a seat for your kid, but sadly for you, the others were taken and you just have to stand or sit elsewhere

Gettingcoldergettingolder · 28/01/2024 15:52

I am really surprised by the number of people who wouldn’t move to another seat on here. For what it’s worth I would have moved, absolutely no cost to me to scoot out the chair and sit in one a few meters away and I wouldn’t even think on it again. The only thing I can think is maybe there is a hidden disability in which case I think trying another person is a better thing. My 5 yr old is so chatty that it would only take a few minutes for the person sat next to her to willingly want to move!

MissersMercer · 28/01/2024 15:52

Yabu op. If you need to sit together reserve seats or be early to get seats.

You can't reserve seats on all trains

Oh I remember that too! Entitled and precious like a few others on here! Grin

Needmorelego · 28/01/2024 15:54

@MissersMercer you can't reserve seats on most trains. Just the 'intercity' style ones.

Needmorelego · 28/01/2024 15:55

@MissersMercer and also how can you "be early" if your stop is number 7 out of 15 stops or whatever?

SandyWaves · 28/01/2024 15:55

The other spare seats may have been reserved for people jumping on at the next station or two? If so, she wasn't being rude because she wanted her seat.

BUT if the other seats weren't reserved, I would have 100% moved. I think any decent person would? I've been in the same situation and a lovely gentleman moved to a single seat and let us have the double. I didn't ask mind, I made my DD sit in front and I sat behind so i could keep an eye on her .

So you would put your child next to someone who refused to move for you both, and have her irritate the other passenger til she was forced to move? Confused

Actual WOW.

SweetBirdsong · 28/01/2024 15:57

@Dibblydoodahdah

You seem very cross with the people here who don't agree with OP

I noticed that too Confused

@Dibblydoodahdah · Today 13:56

No one else standing but the OP. You’re just trying to be clever. The OP’s post was quite clear. She couldn’t just move to one of the other seats because her daughter is five. That was why she was standing. Nothing to do with seats not being available, it was because there weren’t two together.

I don't need to TRY to be clever dear. Smile
