To think that very few normal people are going to vote for a rapist. Any Trump supporters here? Can you explain your thinking?

I don't understand how this man can be a serious candidate. I didn't understand how it happened the first time. Surely normal people are not going to vote for him? But I know he does have supporters so I would love it if any American Trump supporter would be brave enough to come and explain their point of view, as it is totally incomprehensible to many of us...

Please be kind to people with different view points Mumsnet - lets try and hear them

Eh?

Why are you acting like everyone here is stupid and shouldn't believe their lying eyes, YankSplaining?

We saw and heard Trump almost daily for 4 years, and plenty before and since. He hasn't spoken in coherent sentences that whole time.

I can forgive a certain amount of misspeaking while in midflow (eg Trump's "Nambia"). But Trump actually sat in a court room and claimed a photo of E Jean Carroll was of his wife Marla. And it goes on and on and on. We can all see, with those lying eyes of ours, that he's seriously impaired.

Posters claiming that the choice is between an egotistical Trump and an aging Biden are skipping merrily over the fact that Trump too is aging and is visibly failing cognitively.

PerkingFaintly · 28/01/2024 20:16

Any comment from Trump supporters on how they feel about his part in the 6th January attempt to violently overthrow the 2020 election results?

It really is the elephant in the room.

There's all this chatter about what voters do or don't like, but it's all so much window-dressing when you get an incumbent president who considers actual votes to be irrelevant.

PerkingFaintly · 28/01/2024 20:23

As for what a Trump presidency signals to countries which might want to attack the US...

Well, what does intentionally walking off with classified documents and stashing them in a country club signal?

And many, many more examples. Too many to enumerate.

Sitting outside the US, I can tell you that what Trump signals to the rest of world is that Putin has him wrapped round his little finger.

“Speech impediment.” 🙄 I watched him all through the Obama administration, and while he frequently said dumb things, they were at least coherent sentences. Acting like this is all because of a speech impediment is like telling people not to believe their lying eyes.

Why you conclude that I’m judging a presidency by tabloid journalism headlines?! God, Biden supporters seem to never fucking learn that you don’t get people to join your side by acting like they’re stupid. And I don’t even like Trump, so if I feel pissed off at you, imagine how people who actually think he’s a good candidate feel.

Your commentary and language reflect those of tabloid journalism and not of any valid argument. Vulgar language doesn’t convince either. You are trying to make out that Trump is somehow capable . He wasn’t and isn’t . That’s why he couldn’t keep anyone in his cabinet. He supported the insurrection. He Has , as well as his family, has been convicted of fraud. No New Yorker or New Jerseyite would support him as they know he cheated most of the contractors that built his buildings out of their money. He is not to be trusted. Being a pal to dictators is also no shining moment. Biden has decades of experience and has a capable team in his cabinet that work together as a team . That’s a reliable government. If Trump was so grand why didn’t he get re-elected ? Why doesn’t he have any more rallies ? Why doesn’t he participate in debates ? Speaks for itself.

Anniegetyourgun · 28/01/2024 20:50

There's no doubt Biden is past the first flush of youth and he's never been a great speaker. However, where do people get this "senile" and "can't string two sentences together" bullshit from? Been watching doctored clips on Fox and the like, no doubt. Watch an actual speech and see how often he picks a wrong word or loses his way in a sentence - it really doesn't happen often, if at all. Some say he just reads autocue, but if he were that far gone would he be able to anyway? Compare how the orange one maunders off on a complete tangent (windmills, anyone?) and then can't find his way back again. And how he WHINES, OMG.

Kindly also note that Democrats don't have a majority in Congress, so a lot of things they're trying to achieve are being deliberately stymied.

It's also bullshit about Trump having "secured the border". He did no such thing. He just claimed he did and people were happy to believe it. Then Biden came in and didn't lie about immigration, so was accused of personally taking down the precious Wall and letting all those dangerous drug-addled Mexicans in!

As I understand it, the jury in the first E. Jean Carroll case went for sexual assault rather than rape because she could not be clear which bit of himself he stuck in her. If his fingers, it was the former; if his finger-sized wiener, the latter. But that something was stuck in where no thing should have been, there was no dissent.

Regarding Biden's alleged dodgy conduct, he did indeed admit to sniffing the hair of a woman, apologised, and said he would not do it again. I wouldn't want anyone sniffing my hair either, but it sure beats being grabbed by the pussy.

Video of Trump claiming in 2022 that a picture of E Jean Carroll is of his wife Marla:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-us-canada-65501760

And just to correct myself, he wasn't sitting in the courtroom at this moment: he was sitting in a deposition being filmed to be shown in a courtroom. The point is he knew it was formal, legal testimony in which accuracy was important.

Anniegetyourgun · 28/01/2024 20:55

Yes, and the woman to his right actually WAS his wife - the previous one!

Mind you I once mistook a picture of my own son was of my brother (and they weren't even that much alike) - but I'm not running for President.

Anniegetyourgun · 28/01/2024 21:00

Oh, and one other thing: saying Biden can't walk up stairs. There is just ONE piece of footage of him having a fairly spectacular stumble on the way into a plane. It just keeps being played, and played, and played as though he did it often, but look carefully: it is always the same aeroplane 😛 Meanwhile there is footage, also just the one played ad nauseam to be fair, of Trump failing to walk down a ramp.

Bigcoatweather · 28/01/2024 21:08

In a society that has lost its ability to debate without insults, we’re likely to get the leaders we deserve.
Reading this thread leaves me just as horrified as the abysmal choice offered between Biden and Trump.
How does insulting Trump supporters help? The reverse is also true, but if I was a Trump supporter I’d be pretty ticked off about being called dumb and it would only strengthen my resolve to vote for him and prove you wrong.

It’s like Brexit - the ‘remainers’ were so patronisingly rude and insulting to ‘brexiteers’ that they overlooked that their behaviour created something of a silent majority.

I’m not going to continue a conversation with someone who thinks they understand my thinking better than I do. Especially on a thread that was actually started so people in my position, not yours, could explain our thinking.

Sorry, but Biden isn’t an abysmal choice. He has decades of experience and the relationships across the board of politics. He has proven to be a competent president despite what DM or Fox News imply. Trump is just a failed businessman with a loud mouth. It’s embarrassing that he was ever elected. Recent posters have given excellent facts on that.

HumanWrites · 28/01/2024 22:01

Trump is better for the economy. Thanks, capitalism.

YankSplaining · 28/01/2024 22:05

I’m not going to defend Trump’s awfulness, because as I’ve said from my first post on this thread, I don’t like him or Biden and I don’t want either one of them to be president. Any “South Park” fans? It’s an election between a giant douche and a turd sandwich (you can pick which is which). Sorry, hope that wasn’t too pearl-clutchingly vulgar for anyone. 🙄

I said what I came here to say, and now I’m done with this thread.

Well, I've invited you twice to explain your thinking on Trump's part in the 6th January attempt to violently overthrow the election results. <shrug>

People don't care about rape and sexual assault. Unless the victims are men.

Absolutely this.

Looks at the sensitivity with which the male victims of Sinaga were treated.

They weren't vilified in the press for being drunk, or for being in a strange man's house or for their underwear choices.

Can you imagine the same dignity, respect and compassion being accorded to women?

No, somehow it would always be our own fault .

Tracker1234 · 29/01/2024 09:47

I caught the morning news and Biden came onto to talk about the recent ME attacks. He honestly looked like he had escaped from a care home and clearly didnt know where he was or what to say. He was shuffling as opposed to walking and I am shocked at his mental decline. I knew he was struggling but he was emabarssing. If that was my Dad I would be stepping in.

Harris is no better in terms of capability but she is been kept away from the media. Is this really the best the US can do? Trump will walk it...

couiza · 29/01/2024 10:59

At this stage it is impossible to say what will happen. I reckon both sides are a bit entrenched and will only watch and read "their" media outlets. Sure enough if you watch Fox News it will show Biden in a bad light, and vice versa for Democrat leaning media in relation to Trump.

My take on it is who will best represent the USA going forward? It is an American election ok, but the ramifications of the choice of President will go far and beyond the USA also. Domestic policy is of course what most people are interested in, that's the same everywhere, e.g. what will the Tories or Labour do or not do for me!

I agree that name calling and derision of either side is counter productive as already said, but that's the hustings for you, it is the same everywhere. Kick your opponent or their policies or their supporters in order for your side to look better.

Fascinating to watch in real time. I know Biden is getting on, but ageism is a terrible thing too. I suppose that paragon of natural world virtue Sir David Attenborough is not impressed at many thinking he's past it because he is over 80. Trump if he wins (OMG), will be the same age Biden is now at the end of his term. Four years is a very short time, it seems just like yesterday that Biden won and the "insurrection" happened at the Capitol.

Tracker1234 · 29/01/2024 14:03

Biden is more than getting on. He is verging on senile and its shocking that no one is doing anything to help him. He seems totally confused as to what he is meant to be doing. Will they have the TV debates I wonder where he could become very unstuck.

couiza · 29/01/2024 14:23

I'll take a slightly confused President over a mad megalomaniac any day.

They both have hundreds if not thousands of people doing the donkey work and advising them, but only one will listen, the other is right all the time, and will change laws to suit what HE wants.

boobot1 · 29/01/2024 14:36

LividBreeze · 27/01/2024 15:52

The core voters don’t care what he’s accused or convicted of.

They believe it’s either a witch-hunt, a lie or woke ideology.

I’d posit that for his fans, this sort of thing enhances his appeal.

It’s every bit as bonkers as it seems.

Whats happend to the world, every story I read seems more weird than the last. I really hope we see some sanity soon, but I'm not going to hold my breath! I'm amazed that Biden is running again. Biden v Trump is almost as bad as Sunak v Starmer! Both countries are screwed!

You could completely accurately replace the word "Biden" with "Trump" in this post.

I have no idea why the Republicans aren't going with DeSantis. I know DeSantis was a favourite in the party back c2020.

Trump isn't even a sitting president, so doesn't have a natural advantage like that to recommend him. The choice is still open to Republicans; they're completely free to have someone else as their presidential candidate.

ManhattanNY · 29/01/2024 15:01

I don’t live in the US so I don’t know. However, I do spend a lot of time there and from discussion I’ve had, many people vote based on what’s hurting their wallets.
Moral compass isn’t that much of a consideration.

So, if voters felt more economically secure under Trump, that’s who they’ll vote for.

The last few years with inflation has hurt a lot of people and current government is blamed.

Anyway, I’m sure I don’t speak for everyone, but this is just what I’ve been told by a few.
