To think that very few normal people are going to vote for a rapist. Any Trump supporters here? Can you explain your thinking?

I don't understand how this man can be a serious candidate. I didn't understand how it happened the first time. Surely normal people are not going to vote for him? But I know he does have supporters so I would love it if any American Trump supporter would be brave enough to come and explain their point of view, as it is totally incomprehensible to many of us...

Please be kind to people with different view points Mumsnet - lets try and hear them

I don’t think the answer as to why people vote for Trump can be found in Trump.

I think there must be a significant contingent of the American population who feel alienated or mocked or ‘left behind’ or disenfranchised.

When someone like Trump can get significant, winning or potentially winning, votes then you need to look out with the man to look at what is going on, going wrong in American society, that this can happen.

And calling people voting for him ‘deplorables’ is not the answer.

Paranoia is very strong in many parts of the US - other people (usually black people or immigrants) live and breathe to steal to jobs, homes and wives of upstanding law abiding white folks and Trump is almost a caricature of that representation

Op is your title correct?

The court decided he had raped her. So my title is correct on that score- it was not a criminal court. So they could not convict him

Exactly. It’s just the same as in Britain, where the liberal left sneers at ordinary working class people who are concerned about uncontrolled mass immigration, calling them ignorant racist bigots, then wonders why those people won’t vote for them.

In terms of those who will vote for Trump this November, I think there are three main groups:

  1. The hardcore MAGA-hat wearers, who love Trump for his brashness, his outspokenness and his willingness to call a spade a spade. They will forgive him anything, including rape, because they don't believe he's guilty. They believe him when he says all the criticism of him is a witch hunt. They tend not to be the deepest thinkers or the most highly educated, but they turn up to his rallies in droves. They have American flags in their gardens. He speaks to them and for them and they love him for it. Drill baby drill, and Trump digs Coal are slogans they agree with. They don't want oil from Saudi Arabia, they want American oil and American jobs and they are anti-abortion, often religious and conservative.

  2. Those who look at Trump's policies and prefer them to Biden's/the Democrats. Tough borders, energy independence, low taxes, cheap gasoline, etc. They don't really care who the Republican candidate is, but if s/he is going to deliver on the things they care about, that person will get their vote. Many of them actually despise Trump and think he's a clown, but they care more about the economy and the $ in their pocket than about who is sitting in the White House. Some of these people are dyed-in-the-wool Republican voters and would never vote Democrat, because the policies of Democrats don't align with their own values.

  3. Independents who've watched what has happened over the past four years with Biden and who think things under Trump were better. One example: about 30,000 illegal migrants arrived in the UK via small boats last year, it is estimated that 2.5 million crossed the southern US border with Mexico. Trump stopped that flow of people. A lot of Americans feel that Trump's policy was better. They may not like him, in fact they may despise him, but they see Biden as weak, doddery and bad for America.

They also (especially in the southern states) prefer a white guy and are not keen on Kamala because she is black and, well, a she. She is not popular outside of California, apparently.

Ok I’ve had to disconnect a bit from all these court cases as too much

But I wonder why they didn’t pursue a criminal charge

PerkingFaintly · 27/01/2024 20:20

Trump hasn't yet been selected as the Republican candidate .

So Republicans who will never vote Democrat and who feel the Republican party better reflects their values, or that they are better off under Republican presidents, have the option to select someone who isn't Trump.

It's a very genuine question as to why Trump-supporters want him specifically as their candidate.

FYI
"The court" didn't decide anything, though the extremely neutral NY jurors also did not decide that he raped her.

I can’t say if these people are ‘typical’ Trump supporters but these interviews make me wonder about the level of intelligence or otherwise of his fan base. Thank god there’s a limit on how many terms the President can have, although I wouldn’t be amazed if Trump takes a leaf out of his mate Putin’s book and just changes the law to suit himself.

"the jury found he was responsible for sexually abusing and defaming her, and that the sexual abuse amounted to rape"

not the most recent court, this one was the one that found him liable for $83 million damages for saying she had lied for the first court.

Well democrat Marianne Williamson is a good alternative. The US would be sensible to vote a woman in for once.

Trump only got in because people didn't want Hilary.

If he gets back in it's because they don't want Biden again. Dems only have themselves to blame.

OhcantthInkofaname · 27/01/2024 20:27

"Amounted to rape" is nothing more than wording. The jury said no to the count of rape. That's all there is to it.

Your title is incorrect. If you were Trump you'd have been told to pay someone millions of dollars by now.

TempestTost · 27/01/2024 20:35

A lot of people when voting consider what the person they vote for will do for them politically rather than what they are like personally. They might prefer a good person in office, but in the end a good person who pushes policy they don't like is probably not going to win over a shit who does things they feel are politically effective.

And in many cases they don't like either option much personally, so it's even less compelling what they think about their morals.

While some would argue a person whose morals in his or her personal life is questionable will also be a questionable political leader, in reality I don't think that always holds true, and many people see that. Some people are even very upright in their political life, but not great in their love life, or with their kids, etc.

Some people also will think the allegations are false. And as for the comments about celebrity meaning women let men do what they want, nasty as it is there is some truth to it. Of course lots don't and I think most are aware of that. But when people react as if that is unthinkable, it tends to make them look like they are more concerned with saying what they'd like to be true than what is true. Lots of Trump voters find that kind of thing tiresome.

But I would also say, you can't understand Trump voters without understanding the left in the US, and how they are perceived by Americans. They see them as completely out of touch with reality, spouting dangerous ideologies, despising the working classes, as hating their own country, as authoritarian, and worse.

They see both the Democrats and traditional Republicans as being there mainly for banks and the rich. This is something I think people in the UK sometimes miss - the Democrats aren't generally socialists. Hilary Clinton was seen as a big business, pro-bank candidate, and that's true of most Democrats. Remember that they rejected Sanders twice and a lot of people who would have preferred him either refrained from voting at all, or they voted for Trump, because they talked about a lot of the same things.

Simply put: he's an anti-establishment figure who delivered good results last time, and people want to go back to that.

Personally, I think he should run as an independent. Would be good to have a non red/blue win for a change.

DanaBarrettsKitchen · 27/01/2024 20:37

Trump won't get in.

I was concerned about 2 weeks ago, but Iowa and New Hampshire have proved how weak he actually is. He can only get 50% of his own party to support him, which is really bad and must have made him very worried, particularly when he was boasting the Republican party was 95% MAGA.

Of the other other 50% of Republicans, 30% have said they would vote for Biden over Trump. That's Republicans saying that.

A large percentage also said they wouldn't support him if he were convicted, which was really telling as well.

He may have his MAGA base but he won't get enough independents or conservative Republicans to support him to win the election.

The best outcome is a Trump vs Biden election as it will be a defeat for the MAGA movement outright.

Interestingly, it's very likely that Trump will be convicted on at least one of the 91 felonies he's been charged with, so he could very well be in prison on election day. That is going to increase that % of voters who said they wouldn't support him if he were convicted.

His MAGA base just isn't strong enough to carry him through an election.

What is brilliant though is the fact that an 80 year old woman finally held Trump accountable for his actions and he does not like that one bit. Good on E. Jean Carroll.

"amounted to rape" is pretty damning wording! from a court!

Are you a Trump supporter?

Please can you explain why a court finding that his behaviour "amounted to rape" does not make him a rapist? Would you still vote for him even knowing this? I am genuinely interested! I don't understand at all.

Biden is truly awful and not mentally fit to carry on. Why on earth is the family not supporting him to retire. He comes across as not knowing what day it is.

Trump has tapped into something and all his voters cannot be dimwits no matter what the lefties would like to believe (they always shout this out to people who don’t believe in what they do)

Well considering its a choice between him and Biden their pretty much fucked either way so I guess people will decide whether they want to be fucked by a nut job woke senile twat or a incompetent ego maniacal twat 😫

Biden too old but my goodness him always over Trump. Trump may well stop further elections, he is a frightening prospect for US and the world.

And January 6 2020 should have disqualified him from ever running again.

mindutopia · 27/01/2024 20:42

I’m the furthest you’ll ever find from a Trump supporter, but my mum and stepdad are (they live in the US). Stepdad would never in his life ever vote for anyone who isn’t a Republican. If Satan himself was the Republican presidential nominee, he would happily vote for him. My mum has been a lifelong Democrat, but now she does whatever my stepdad does. So has changed her party registration to Republican and will probably vote Trump. They watch a lot of Fox News and buy into it all I suppose. I’m NC with them (not for this reason, but I’m grateful it means I don’t have to hear about this wanker).

Imagine not being able to comprehend simple wording.

Nevertheless, your post demonstrates exactly why his voters could not give a toss about this civil case.
There is no way that if you were on the jury you would give him a fair shake, because you've decided already.

I read somewhere that voting for Trump was the fury of stupid old white men and their entourage (trad wives and all) that USA "dared" to vote a black man for president.

It's still has an awful undercurrent of racism there amongst certain parts of the population.

The whole thing is horrendous, including the overturning of Roe V Wade.

I'm not sure the numbers support this.

While men are a lot more likely to vote for Trump than women, in the election he lost the main demographic that voted for him in fewer numbers were white men. He increased his votes among the black and Hispanic populations, and his polling numbers now for both have gone up as well. It's still not huge for the black population (although IIRC they are clumped among the younger population which is interesting), but quite a lot of Hispanic voters are conservative.

Kendodd · 27/01/2024 20:47

I think he's going to win.
