Sorry if I’ve missed any threads on this.

It’s not just sky news reporting this but for days now in the media this is being raised.

AIBU - to be extremely worried and concerned about this?

Is anyone else not worried?? Are we being prepared ready as “the higher up” know more and the threat is bigger than we’re told.

what age would it be from and to??

l‘m so scared for the world our children are growing up in 😢

Time to 'think the unthinkable' and consider UK conscription, says Britain's former top NATO commander

General Sir Richard Sherriff tells Sky News that even if Russia is defeated in the war against Ukraine, it is going to remain determined to rebuild another empire, subjugate Ukraine, and then move on to other ex-Soviet countries, like NATO members. Tha...

Why sons? Daughters would be conscripted too. We live in a society where girls and women (in theory) can do anything a boy/man can.

Id rather go myself than my DC.

They can fuck off if they think my children are fighting in any land war. I don't think anybody else's children should either. I would rather Russia just took over than a generation were sacrificed to prevent it.

You cannot be serious. What a stupid comment.

will the daughters of politicians be conscripted too, if this does happen, I wonder?

My sister and her family have been looking at moving to New Zealand from the UK for years as they're disillusioned by the state of the country and the direction that it's been going in. I suspect this will give them the push they need.
If either mine or DP's jobs were on the skilled list, we'd be off like a shot as well.

Australia is one of the few countries likely to survive long term if there’s a nuclear bomb.
So good move I’d say

Jeeze oh, no wonder this country is doomed

Naptrappedmummy · 25/01/2024 20:15

I have a (baby) DS, a brother in his 20s and a DP who is in good health so would likely be conscripted if this happened.

I have to say all this ‘over my dead body will my DH/DS/DB go to war’ bemuses me. Firstly it would be compulsory, so you wouldn’t be able to stop it. Secondly what do you think would happen if they didn’t?! A gentle occupation where we learn a second language? It would be worse for most men than going to fight where at least they’re trying to control their own destiny.

It would be horrific but life is occasionally horrific. We are no more ‘worthy’ and ‘special’ than the people who have been caught up in wars for the past however many hundreds of years. It’s like some people simply can’t cope with the idea of life not being inherently fair and just.

WinterMorn · 25/01/2024 20:15

@Naptrappedmummy 👏👏👏

Livida · 25/01/2024 20:16

Ffs it wouldn't be invasion and occupation of the UK! It would be uk forces sent to fight russia in Eastern Europe

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 25/01/2024 20:18

All major wars fought by Britain or England have involved conscription . Especially Naval conscription.
And I'm no fan of our political leaders but in both first and second world wars they and their families fought. I remember reading a poignant description in a university history text about Asquith leaving a meeting he was chairing as prime minister to receive the news that his son had died on the western front then returning to continue the meeting.
Also if Putin wants to conquer us and the rest of Europe he needs to get his skates on, he isn't doing so well in Ukraine and he isn't getting any younger!

Charlie2121 · 25/01/2024 20:20

SmellyKat10 · 25/01/2024 19:41

Let the politicians and their sons stand on the front line.

yeah. Didn’t think so.

Why not daughters as well? Society can’t demand equality and then reverse that view when it suits.

Damnloginpopup · 25/01/2024 20:20

I quite miss the cold war. Those were the days...forty plus years of expecting third shock army to roll over the border separating E/W Germany and onto the channel ports. Watching Threads and When the Wind Blows at school. Singing along to 99 Red Balloons. Discussing what we would do when we heard the four minute warning .. Knew where we were with our cold war.

I'll never forget the footage of people coming over the wall that night. I was 16. Watching USSR unravel. East became West...

Then wtf? Shit got sandy left right and centre. Far too much shit to keep track of.

Conscription ain't gonna happen. Slow news week. Distraction from (insert whatever news needs burying). Nothing to see here...

Not really the point of the post, but ok.

Trappedandunhappy · 25/01/2024 20:21

So a quick search so I may not have it right but… I think he is a former general. No current government role. Has spoken up about defence cuts in the past and has written a book. Great publicity for him, riding the wave of his recent OBE? No longer a director of several companies. Trying to earn some money?

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 25/01/2024 20:22

If our government in Ireland had their way they would have all our youth signed up to fight for wars that has nothing to do with us. Slowly trying to get us into Nato also when we are meant to be neutral. Sick of all these wars and all these men in power full of anger and rage, but yet I bet their sons will never go to war.

Yasai · 25/01/2024 20:23

I’m just a nobody sat on my phone in my pyjamas but we know that it’s common for the government to ‘plant’ a story to gauge public feeling. This happened during Covid prior to ‘announcements’.

The government isn’t going to immediately jump to conscription as a means of increasing the forces. None of us have a crystal ball but this story is almost certainly a springboard to substantially increasing the military budget, I’d say.

Ultimately, we are living in enormously testing times and a considerable percentage of the population are of the opinion that we meddle in matters which do not concern us rather too much. The government don’t stand a chance of successfully implementing conscription in our current society.

I have a daughter literally suicidal over this right now. I started a thread she is stock piling pills. She is crawling up the walls in fear. If someone who comes on this thread that knows anyway I can of talking her down with facts and figures I would be forever grateful.

Tell her that this guy doesn’t have a current government role and is probably just trying to get publicity to sell his book as he doesn’t seem to have a current role. We can ignore him.

Spendonsend · 25/01/2024 20:25

Truebee · 25/01/2024 20:08

@Spendonsend are you suggesting Ukraine should just negotiate and handover their land to Russia to stop the war?

Im sharing what a bunch of 16 /17 year olds felt /said.

The man that made the statement about conscription said that even if ukraine defeats russia we need to look at conscription as russia will regain strength and go for other baltic states in many years time. It feels like a massive windows of opportunity to try prevent this situation that hasnt actually happened yet from happening and doesnt involve ukraine doing anything other than whatever ukraine wants to do.

WinterMorn · 25/01/2024 20:25

We need to increase the military budget, and we need more people to see the armed services as a viable and meaningful career. That’s what this all seems to really be about.

Fancylike · 25/01/2024 20:26

Truebee · 25/01/2024 19:36

They might need conscription in the sense that those that work in IT, move into IT roles helping army, or drivers start working in army logistics etc. they aren't going to send regular civilians to the front line, combat is far too complex these days it would take so much training for anyone to be ready.

This is why Zionists are busy blowing themselves up in Gaza. Human shields with no training, gunning down every civilian that spooks them.

windowframer · 25/01/2024 20:27

Naptrappedmummy · 25/01/2024 19:40

And how do you think the Russians would treat your family?

How the fuck are we already in Enemies At The Gates territory?

There is a war between two countries. Neither of them are the UK. Neither of them are even allies of the UK. One of them wants one day to join an alliance that would give it some links to the UK.

Russia is run by a corrupt autocrat. So are a lot of places in the world. Last I checked, Russia didn't have either the intention or the capacity to take over the WHOLE world.

There is always shit going on somewhere. Some old geezer who speaks for noone has given his OPINION that the UK ought to bring back conscription. So what?

FFS people get a grip.

SmellyKat10 · 25/01/2024 20:28

Gen Z won’t work past 5pm and are offended by the thumbs up icon.

I can’t even imagine how they’d fare in a war 🙊

(yes yes not all Gen Z I know…)

Nobody says they’re at the gates. I’m treating this as a thought experiment more than anything, but my response still stands. What do you all think would happen if men refused to be conscripted (or rather their mother declined on their behalf LOL)?

Justpontificating · 25/01/2024 20:29

berksandbeyond · 25/01/2024 19:49

People saying ‘oh my kids won’t be fighting’ are kidding themselves, that’s not how conscription works funnily enough. If it comes to it- they’ll be going. Mothers didn’t want their kids to fight in any other war either, that’s kinda the whole point in conscription

No
People can refuse as conscientious objectors.

You can even refuse to fight if you’re actually in the armed forces
