Sorry if I’ve missed any threads on this.

It’s not just sky news reporting this but for days now in the media this is being raised.

AIBU - to be extremely worried and concerned about this?

Is anyone else not worried?? Are we being prepared ready as “the higher up” know more and the threat is bigger than we’re told.

what age would it be from and to??

l‘m so scared for the world our children are growing up in 😢

Time to 'think the unthinkable' and consider UK conscription, says Britain's former top NATO commander

General Sir Richard Sherriff tells Sky News that even if Russia is defeated in the war against Ukraine, it is going to remain determined to rebuild another empire, subjugate Ukraine, and then move on to other ex-Soviet countries, like NATO members. Tha...

This is what I believe too. It’s horrible to think like this and I know people think it is scaremongering- but isn’t it best we get prepared at all levels now. What “prepared” looks like I don’t know.

Posypointshoes · 25/01/2024 20:01

I'm not sure we really can prepare tbh, we don't know exactly what 'war' looks like in this day and age. It could take many forms.

Agreed

They can fuck right off

the days of people or let’s face it men being asked to lay down their lives for “king and country” are over. No way are my boys being sacrificed while the fucking idiots who cause wars remain protected.

What do you think would happen to them if we were invaded?

BeaRF75 · 25/01/2024 20:01

Not worried at all, because 1) it's very speculative and 2) worrying never solved anything.
What will be, will be. I save worry for things that might actually be within my control (because then it might motivate me to do something different).

girlfriend44 · 25/01/2024 20:02

Naptrappedmummy · 25/01/2024 19:40

And how do you think the Russians would treat your family?

What and actitude, can you imagine parents years ago saying that, they just got on and did it and accepted it.
Some people are so poorly disciplined today they wouldn't stand up to it.
The discipline would actually be good for them. It's sadly lacking today.

Adrifting · 25/01/2024 20:03

No one I know who is young enough to be conscripted would give a fuck if I fell under a bus tomorrow, so I'm not going to waste any worry on what might happen to them.

Mummytotwonow · 25/01/2024 20:03

@TooOldForThisNonsense I thought like this at first, but what’s the alternative? If there was a land invasion we all try and hide? We would have to fight, all of us for any chance to try and save our children.

Its a scaremongering tactic to highlight the lack of budget for armed forces rather than anything that will happen in reality.

It would be totally unworkable and unrealistic to do it these days.

Exactly this

There may well be an expansion of the armed forces (which have shrunk dramatically in the last decades) but conscription is a nonsense.

Alwaysanotherwine · 25/01/2024 20:03

by time the time comes the media and government will have scared us all shitless by the alternatives

id have never have thought people so easily brainwashed to isolate themselves from loved ones, to see family members say alone at funerals, to dob their neighbours in yet covid saw us all witness people fall in line like sheep! People acted like crazy. We saw the anger and downright ridiculous attitudes all over mumsnet! People literally reporting their neighbours 🤯

so yes if needed the messages and narrative will start a year before and people will be queuing up i bet 100%

we have proven the last few years that people are sheep, scared and want rules to follow

LadyLapsang · 25/01/2024 20:04

This is all about government departments setting out their stall in negotiations with Treasury; do we want our taxes spent on health, education, defence or something else? Do we want to increase spending on public services or make tax cuts?

Crackoncrackerjack · 25/01/2024 20:04

For us to be affected by a land invasion the whole of Western Europe will have been occupied first to get to us - simple geography - so we’d be fucked by then anyway

Posypointshoes · 25/01/2024 20:05

@Alwaysanotherwine I disagree actually. I think people have now seen that they did all this when the government did not follow their own rules...I don't think they would so blindly follow again. Especially when the alternative is sending their loved ones out to fight.

Well you need someone to pay your pension.

Absolutely agree.
But it’s worrying
Ive spent the last hour googling whether my 3 kids bad eye sight will get them out of it.

Ultimately we are not the same people as we were in the first two wars. A lot just simply will refuse to fight.

If we are invaded though we have a ww2 snipers bunker in our front garden and we’ll happily set ourselves up behind that to protect ourselves.

GelatoPistacchio · 25/01/2024 20:06

The whole point of that speech is to get people worried. If we are panicking over the possibility of conscription, then we are more likely to accept increased taxes to fund an expansion in defence spending as a compromise.

Don't fall for it.

There may be a good argument for increased defence spending but this is a shitty tactic.

Spendonsend · 25/01/2024 20:06

My 16 year old son and his friends were concerned by the reports. They were concerned about being sent to fight other people who were sent to fight, by leaders who could just negotiate and not have a war.

Wow
What a shocking attitude

Truebee · 25/01/2024 20:08

@Spendonsend are you suggesting Ukraine should just negotiate and handover their land to Russia to stop the war?

This is NATO though and other countries have had similar statements about increased need

I agree it shifts our normal even if not gov initiated

I have been following arguments from concerned NATO people talking about Trump returning and imo the reality of that increased over the last week

If he does leave then that’s a huge gap to fund

kerstina · 25/01/2024 20:09

Over my dead body will my DS be conscripted to serve in an overseas war started by war mongerer’s rather than peacemakers. Put the bloody old men wanting to stir up trouble and let them fight it out in a field .

I watching that programme last week on how the threat of nuclear war has gone up. It’s always bloody men that start them .

Mummytotwonow · 25/01/2024 20:09

I’d feel more comfortable if we get a voluntary citizen army trained and ready in worse case scenario. There will be people out there who would want to if it came to it, at least they would have had some training and we would know what roles we have etc.

@HateItWhenABitchLetsHimselfSlide I'm aware of that. I have both male and female family members in the forces. My family have served in the Royal Welch for generations, amoungst other regiments and battalions now they have dispersed. However, I only have sons. They can't have daughters I don't have.

Jumpingthruhoops · 25/01/2024 20:11

There's been a long held belief that this is why many hotels in this country were asked to house groups of incoming migrants, that just happened to be largely made up of fighting age men.

When this was first mentioned, it was immediately shut down as a 'conspiracy theory'. In light of this recent news, it sounds almost plausible now...
