Sorry if I’ve missed any threads on this.

It’s not just sky news reporting this but for days now in the media this is being raised.

AIBU - to be extremely worried and concerned about this?

Is anyone else not worried?? Are we being prepared ready as “the higher up” know more and the threat is bigger than we’re told.

what age would it be from and to??

l‘m so scared for the world our children are growing up in 😢

Time to 'think the unthinkable' and consider UK conscription, says Britain's former top NATO commander

General Sir Richard Sherriff tells Sky News that even if Russia is defeated in the war against Ukraine, it is going to remain determined to rebuild another empire, subjugate Ukraine, and then move on to other ex-Soviet countries, like NATO members. Tha...

They can fuck off if they think my children are fighting in any land war. I don't think anybody else's children should either. I would rather Russia just took over than a generation were sacrificed to prevent it.

I’m glad my grandparents’ generation didn’t have the same view about Nazi Germany.

Catdoorman · 25/01/2024 19:52

Russia isn't going to invade the UK, we have nothing that they want. Our government is scaremongering.

NotQuiteHere · 25/01/2024 19:53

These military men always want more money and more canon fodder.
That makes them feel important.

WinterLobelia · 25/01/2024 19:53

OP- I think many people are worried.

I am consoling myself with the thought that my Dcs have dual nationality with a country not in Europe and so if this comes even close to coming in I am leaving with them.

One of mine is barely functional due to SEN and so I hope he is 'safe' either way.

Gagaandgag · 25/01/2024 19:53

Don’t understand why we are publicising this

Justpontificating · 25/01/2024 19:53

Mummytotwonow · 25/01/2024 19:42

The difficulty is we don’t want our children or husbands to go and fight if there was conscription - but would it be more horrendous allowing Russian soldiers terrorising us all??

It horrendous to think these things, but one day this might happen.

Edited

And wives, sisters etc.
Equality means we are all equal now. So the call up won’t discriminate

Russia isn't going to invade the UK, we have nothing that they want. Our government is scaremongering.

The headline is from ex NATO

Livida · 25/01/2024 19:53

It wouldn't be an invasion, it would be going to fight elsewhere

WickerMam · 25/01/2024 19:54

This is being whipped up by a tory press, planting seeds of "who would you trust at a time of war - a strong right winger, or a woke human rights loving lefty". Ignore it - worrying about it is pointless.

stargirl1701 · 25/01/2024 19:54

Reads like a dead cat story.

BurkeWalter · 25/01/2024 19:56

In order to prevent a war is usually better to have a bigger army etc

Justpontificating · 25/01/2024 19:56

Vettrianofan · 25/01/2024 19:45

Well my family is utterly f*cked if this comes to fruition as I have four sons 😫 those with four girls will be fine though.

That’s not true I’m afraid to say for all those mums of girls.
They will be called up too, it’s called equality.
Women have been on the front line for years.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 25/01/2024 19:56

I mean I come from a country where army is mandatory for all boys in case of war so I’m used to this idea. Do I think it’ll happen here - unlikely. Could it happen? Of course. Am I worried? No.

hogmanayhoolie · 25/01/2024 19:56

As posters have said on the other threads about this, by the time it gets to the stage of mass mobilisation, we're fucked anyway and life will be quite different

And to the poster who thinks Putin doesn't follow Mumsnet. You're breathtakingly naive if you don't know what Russian shills regularly get up to on Mumsnet. I suspect that's why one of the threads was completely deleted

StopTheBusINeedAWeeWeeAWeeWeeBagOChips · 25/01/2024 19:33

Its a scaremongering tactic to highlight the lack of budget for armed forces rather than anything that will happen in reality.

It would be totally unworkable and unrealistic to do it these days.

I also initially thought this.

But look at Ukraine. When tanks start rolling in things are quite different.

Catdoorman · 25/01/2024 19:57

Yes, probably Ukraine.

cherry2727 · 25/01/2024 19:57

The patriotic people who scream at foreigners to go back home and leave their country should prove their patriotism and go fight for it!

Rooroobear · 25/01/2024 19:58

The last thread was deleted! I think the uk need to prepare for the fact we ARE going to war. Quite a high number of the British Army (and other countries) have been posted already. All the bullshit about only a third can be posted at once is bull shit. It’s happening and in the not too distant future (maybe not conscription but war)

TooOldForThisNonsense · 25/01/2024 19:58

Crackoncrackerjack · 25/01/2024 19:30

There’d be a massive outcry, my sons are not going to be lions led by donkeys

Agreed

They can fuck right off

the days of people or let’s face it men being asked to lay down their lives for “king and country” are over. No way are my boys being sacrificed while the fucking idiots who cause wars remain protected.

Princessandthepea0 · 25/01/2024 19:59

People have really short memories. 10 years ago it would be unthinkable that we would have our liberty taken away and it would be illegal to sit on a park bench. Anyone who thinks this couldn’t happen is deluded - more so if they think a fuck off on mumsnet will solve it.

HateItWhenABitchLetsHimselfSlide · 25/01/2024 19:59

Theothersideofthefence · 25/01/2024 19:33

My boys will not be spilling blood for a government that would otherwise watch them starve.

Please just be mindful of all the scaremongering that happened with covid. We are weak if in a constant state of fear.

It wouldn't just be boys, girls would be called as well.

Posypointshoes · 25/01/2024 19:59

will the daughters of politicians be conscripted too, if this does happen, I wonder?

My sister and her family have been looking at moving to New Zealand from the UK for years as they're disillusioned by the state of the country and the direction that it's been going in. I suspect this will give them the push they need.
If either mine or DP's jobs were on the skilled list, we'd be off like a shot as well.

Posypointshoes · 25/01/2024 20:00

daughters and sons of politicians that should have said
