Sorry if I’ve missed any threads on this.

It’s not just sky news reporting this but for days now in the media this is being raised.

AIBU - to be extremely worried and concerned about this?

Is anyone else not worried?? Are we being prepared ready as “the higher up” know more and the threat is bigger than we’re told.

what age would it be from and to??

l‘m so scared for the world our children are growing up in 😢

Time to 'think the unthinkable' and consider UK conscription, says Britain's former top NATO commander

General Sir Richard Sherriff tells Sky News that even if Russia is defeated in the war against Ukraine, it is going to remain determined to rebuild another empire, subjugate Ukraine, and then move on to other ex-Soviet countries, like NATO members. Tha...

Gen Z won’t work past 5pm and are offended by the thumbs up icon.

I can’t even imagine how they’d fare in a war 🙊

(yes yes not all Gen Z I know…)

DP just said this, he says even if they got the numbers they’d be beyond useless.

If the uk was invaded like Ukraine, would you all just sit back lockdown style? I would absolutely fight for our independence and freedom from a Russian dictatorship. Would I choose it? No, but life choices aren’t always ours. I didn’t choose covid either but I coped the best we could in the circumstances.

Totally agree.

Probably a bit unfair. I can’t see Gen X, millennials or boomers having proved themselves, we’ve been luckier than the generations before us all

No
People can refuse as conscientious objectors.

You can even refuse to fight if you’re actually in the armed forces

Glad to hear somebody has a cunning plan.

So a quick search so I may not have it right but… I think he is a former general. No current government role. Has spoken up about defence cuts in the past and has written a book. Great publicity for him, riding the wave of his recent OBE? No longer a director of several companies. Trying to earn some money?

I understand he’s still serving but retiring in the summer

Not a plan
Just a fact

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 25/01/2024 20:33

To be fair to the general who started this and is getting a bit of a bashing here and elsewhere, the British Army and the Foreign Office have identified Russia as Britain's main threat and enemy . This dates to the very early years of the 19th century.
He was just saying what the army always think.

gegs73 · 25/01/2024 20:33

For what it’s worth, I think a lot of people would refuse to join if conscripted to fight a war, probably in the hundreds of thousands if not more. Aren’t prisons crumbling and overflowing? Very unlikely they would have the space to be able to put everyone refusing into prison.

HowDoTheyGetThroughLife · 25/01/2024 20:34

The usual scare-mongering.

I have a daughter literally suicidal over this right now. I started a thread she is stock piling pills. She is crawling up the walls in fear. If someone who comes on this thread that knows anyway I can of talking her down with facts and figures I would be forever grateful.

It is a fact that unless the Russians were literally on the beaches, the womenfolk will be left alone.
If conscription happens (which it won't), it'll be the 18-24s, 24-36s, 36-50s... THEN the women.

It's also a fact that if Russia got as far as our beaches (which they won't, not least because they're just not interested), the nuclear fallout will be the pressing concern since they will have recently all been fired off.

WinterMorn · 25/01/2024 20:34

I think a surprising amount of people would willingly sign up to this if it came to the crunch.

BeverForget · 25/01/2024 20:34

The Russians have had their arses handed to them by Ukraine.
They are in no position to launch a large scale land offensive.
The next major war will be a tactically nuclear one.
Essentially, how many nukes can be dropped in Europe and UK whilst keeping the US out of the conflict.
Probably half a dozen would be about right.

alwaysmovingforwards · 25/01/2024 20:34

Terrrence · 25/01/2024 19:32

They can fuck off if they think my children are fighting in any land war. I don't think anybody else's children should either. I would rather Russia just took over than a generation were sacrificed to prevent it.

Good lord, and to think of those who sacrificed their lives in recent wars so that future generations, like you, can live in this free country to then hand it over so flippantly to an aggressor who really doesn't have your best interests at heart...

Rosscameasdoody · 25/01/2024 20:35

I read it in the Guardian yesterday. An outgoing general was warning that our armed services were woefully underfunded and that in the event of war, we would have to introduce conscription. He warned that if Trump actually became the next US president he would pull America out of NATO and may not support the UK in wartime. It seems like scare tactics. In practical terms I wonder if you can realistically ask people to lay down their lives for their country, when all their country has offered them under the Tories is a shambolic handling of a pandemic, public services, welfare and NHS cut to the bone, and a cost of living crisis that has reduced some to having to choose between heating their homes and putting food on the table.

You are forgetting China. They would not want this scenario at all.

Theothersideofthefence · 25/01/2024 20:36

If our current forces and those whom served before them were treated with the respect they deserve by the government, we wouldn't be in this situation in the first place.

Perhaps they should look to invest in the aftercare these men and women desperately need, after the atrocities they have witnessed and suffered through. Maybe then people would consider the forces as a career choice worthy of their services. Obviously pay massively comes into this. The severe lack of support they receive however, is extremely lacking when returning as a civilian.

bogoffeternal · 25/01/2024 20:36

I think this is scare mongering.

BBC do the same thing when their charter is up for review. They threaten to take BBC good food offline if they can't increase the licence fee.

Ha. People are disillusioned with this country and rightly so. Record breaking number of people living in poverty, why would they want to fight for a country that is failing them?

And how do you think the Russians would treat your family?

To be fair for many people it couldn't get any worse than what their lives have become under this government....

It will never happen OP. People will refuse after the mess and lies that was covid.

They wouldn’t be fighting ‘for the country’, they would be fighting to stop an invading force doing… unspeakable things to them and the people they care about. It’s hilarious how many people think if you just refuse to fight, the war stops there!

Because in a time of crisis, people will very quickly reassess their values

I’m afraid that’s incorrect.
That was the modus operandi in ww2
Its not the same now and women have been on the front line for a long time.
It is policy that they are not discriminated against in the armed forces and will be called up with their ages group.
If it happens at all
It would now be against the law not to treat all equally
