Ready yourself for the Citizen's Army

Is the head of the army being sensationalist to highlight lack of army funding or is the reality of a citizen's army in the UK a step towards a new era of conscription? Both parties would play anything like this down in an election year.

Also, given how quickly people take offence these days, we'd all be too busy citing each others' micro aggressions to get our bayonets fixed in time.

Yes and there would have to be a thorough risk assessment before anyone was sent into battle.

Fourfurrymonsters · 25/01/2024 14:06

War is rich men sending poor men to die, and always has been.
As my 20-year old son said earlier today “if the people of the UK are being brought together to fight, you’d hope it would be to overthrow the shit government that dragged us into this, not going to fight some other poor saps in another country”

Zonic · 25/01/2024 14:08

Just another form of National Service

1dayatatime · 25/01/2024 14:10

@Whatafustercluck
"Which brings me full circle: this is all posturing and fear mongering to drive investment in the military. We'd be better investing in diplomatic relations so that those very clever people can continue to keep us all out of all out war in the first place.

While conscription is, theoretically, possible if all of the above fails, it remains a very tiny likelihood."

You are completely correct which is why I see this thread as a theoretical discussion rather than anything possible or likely.

Have you been to East Germany?

Yes I have family members actually living there.

So you'd be happy to live under a Nazi state?

I can’t imagine it would be any worse than living under the Tory party we have now, or the so called Labour Party we might expect.

I’m surprised there haven’t been more comments on this.
Livinginanotherworld do you really think living in a Nazi state is no worse than under a Tory or Labour government?
I just hope you’re not Jewish, disabled, gay or left wing.

Livinginanotherworld · 25/01/2024 14:18

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 25/01/2024 08:58

Hopefully.

If somebody truly believes that the Nazis (be it neo-nazis or 3rd Reich nazis) would be better than the Tory or Labour party... Well, that would be willful ignorance at best.
Or somebody who is quite fond of genocide, the persecution of various minorities and nazi-style "family" values. In other words: A nazi themselves.

Hahahahahahaha 🙄

Pride? In Britain?! 😂 We're led by self-serving xenophobic imbeciles, our 'glorious empire' history is actually one of colonisation and slavery. Our Royal family and outdated class system just perpetuates a cap-doffing, serf mentality and our infrastructure, education system and public services are in the toilet.

We're also shit at Eurovision. I wouldn't vote for us either.

If another country wanted to invade I'd be asking what they're offering, it might be better than what we have.

Yep ! 👏👏👏

In this era of #BeKind, then telling people to potentially kill their fellow man... it is nuts.

What would be the upper age limit anyway? Asking for me.

I think you’ll find #Bekind went out of fashion roughly 3 years ago.

@ssd would you prefer as @1dayatatime posts?

’Simply to do nothing and let the likes of Putin put in place in the UK a puppet government (dictator) that is aligned to Russia' values and interests.’

We already have a puppet government and opposition, they are certainly not working for the UK nor are they funded by them.

MereDintofPandiculation · 25/01/2024 14:27

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 24/01/2024 22:41

Hopefully conscripting women too this time 🤞🏼

Women were “conscripted” in WWII, just not into the armed forces. Into the land army, munitions, research etc. it was called “directed labour”.

Barbadossunset · 25/01/2024 14:30

Sure. If Iran or Russia invade what’s your response

No problem go for it?

Livinginanotherworld · 25/01/2024 14:49

You do realise that the biggest aggressors to world peace are the Western governments mainly of US, UK and Israel don’t you ?

Russia absolutely will not invade the UK and if it did, the US won’t defend us. Iran have no intention of invading the uk either.
It’s the UK war mongering government leaders in their action man outfits playing billy big balls as usual sucking up to the US warmongering governments.

So it won’t happen is the answer. Not that you welcome another country’s values as applauding below.

We’re lucky here, hence the posts you get on welcoming invasion or already governed by someone else

Poorlymumma · 25/01/2024 15:05

I think if we were randomly attacked or invaded young people might feel a duty to fight for their country, but that's not what's happening. The government aren't exactly protecting people in the UK from war at the moment and seem to be trying to invite it.

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 25/01/2024 15:50

He didn’t say conscription or National Service, he said ‘volunteer army’ as in doing it for free if you want to.

I’m sure they will be queuing up.

I agree and for a variety of reasons it's not going to happen.

Nevertheless an interesting hypothetical discussion.

The problem is that the type of people who might feel a duty to fight for their country's western values would be doing it to protect the type of people who constantly self hate western values but ironically would the ones to suffer most if those values were removed.

It’s a privilege to be able to post on SM how much you loathe western values and be of little threat to the reality of having them removed

Mn is the height of this at times. Eg pp who would welcome invasion as it would be better etc

I'm sure those in Ukraine, thought it would never happen. I don't think anything is beyond the realms of possibility. Sadly.

I meant that the prospect of conscription is hypothetical whereas an attack on the UK particularly a grey zone attack is, as you say, not beyond the realms of possibility.

The present UK government has done so little for the young people of this country they'd have a nerve expecting them to line up for duty eg. Get killed for them

sprigatito · 25/01/2024 18:06

@lola8345 I doubt anyone in Ukraine thought it could "never happen". Ukraine and the UK couldn't be more different in terms of the likelihood of a ground war Confused
