Ready yourself for the Citizen's Army

Is the head of the army being sensationalist to highlight lack of army funding or is the reality of a citizen's army in the UK a step towards a new era of conscription? Both parties would play anything like this down in an election year.

This is how the Roman Empire fell.

EasternStandard · 25/01/2024 09:41

QuizzlyBear · 25/01/2024 09:37

@EasternStandard who do I prefer? No idea. New Zealand and Canada seem to have a better relationship with their citizens than we do, but they're unlikely to declare war on us unless our government do something (even more) stupid.

It's hardly inviting war to state that I find no reason to feel pride in our current situation.

A country like NZ or Canada are not going to invade

But if you’re up for an invading nation you’re looking at dissimilar values, from Iran to Hamas style

Good luck

Old statistics

This is the data we have. No evidence of 'relying'.

Latest available data 2021/2022

In the 12 months to 31 March 2022, 77% of the untrained personnel who joined the UK Regular Forces were recruited from England, while 7% were from Scotland, 5% from Wales and 1% from Northern Ireland. The location of 10% of the untrained intake was not known (this includes personnel who entered from outside the UK). 25% of personnel were recruited from either the South East or South West regions, whereas only 3% were recruited from London. The five parliamentary constituencies with the largest number of intake to the UK Regular Forces were Aldershot (with 90 personnel); Devizes (80 personnel); Richmond (Yorkshire) (80 personnel); Plymouth, Moor View (70 personnel); and Sleaford and North Hykeham (70 personnel).

Intake by Parliamentary Constituency

In the latest financial year (12 months ending 31 March 2022), for the Royal Navy/Royal Marines, the region with the largest number of intake was South West with 500 personnel joining, while the Parliamentary Constituencies with the largest number of intake were Gosport and South West Devon with 30 personnel each joining. For the Army in the same period, Officer intake data could not be broken down by Parliamentary Constituency due to lack of recruits’ Postcode information. The Officers intake data has therefore been included in the ’Unknown’ category in the accompanying Excel and ODS tables. For the Army, the region with the largest number of Other Ranks intake was South East with 990 personnel while the Parliamentary Constituency with the largest number of Other Ranks intake was Aldershot with 70 personnel. For the RAF, the regions with the largest number of intake were South West and East Midlands with 270 personnel each joining, while the Parliamentary Constituency with the largest number of intake was Sleaford and North Hykeham with 40 personnel joining.

@therealcookiemonster

well, someone has to be in charge of Air Fryers!

spicedlemonpie · 25/01/2024 09:56

WW3 will happen its coming.
And it dont bother me one bit.
It may not be as bad as the last but it will be bad enough. Ive said it for years we will have a war.
And just maybe it will sort some people out make the realise its not all about them.
Entitled people will taste reality won't they.
See if SM saves you i bet it wont.
Will ticktoc help nope.
Time to tell the young gen to grow the fuck up.
Gentle parents time to toughen up and tell your sons its not gonna be gentle in the army.

On a funny note.
If men are called up i think it would do wonders for MN women might stop them from moaning about how bad the other half is on MN.

1dayatatime · 25/01/2024 09:59

So presumably the main reason why the UK would fight a war against a "peer power" such as Russia or Iran or China is to protect sovereignty. Which in simpler terms is to preserve western values such as democracy, freedom of speech, comparative liberal values, tolerance.

Yet at the same time we see the self hate of western values and western society by the very sections of society who would suffer the very most from the removal of such values and ironically who would be the least willing to sign up and defend those values.

Gorganzolabrie · 25/01/2024 10:01

@sprigatito

"Virtually none of the servicemen and women who have been butchered in wars in the past hundred years have died "fighting for their country", that's a massive cynical con. They died fighting for the careers of politicians/American oil interests/various other grubby and venal causes. War is predominantly working class people being slaughtered to protect the interests of the rich and powerful. Nothing to be proud of there; plenty to be angry about, though."

Well said!

Stressedafff · 25/01/2024 10:01

There’s no way the 18-21 year olds would fight for a country that’s provided nothing for them and I don’t blame them one jot

Risk their lives potentially for what? So they can come out the army and join a housing list with a 4 year wait.

Um, they would fight in exactly the same way as Ukrainian young men. What other options would they have? If things have got to the point they are needed, bad shit has already happened and the nation would not tolerate, (house feed employ) people perceived as not doing their duty.

spicedlemonpie · 25/01/2024 10:16

Maybe war is the wake-up call britten and a lot of people need.

C152 · 25/01/2024 10:18

It's not sensationalist at all to highlight the lack of funding. It's been underfunded for decades and now we've got a serious problem. Unless Russia is stopped soon, there will be another world war. As a nation, it doesn't seem the UK is preparing for that.

selfishmeow · 25/01/2024 10:41

Maybe if we stopped stepping on other countries toes and working alongside other countries that are actively doing so by profiteering from shredding and destabilising other countries and setting camps outside other countries we wouldn't even need an army. We are the aggressors, not us the people but our politicians who serve those for their own personal gains. One example, 2 days before the Ukrainian war broke out, Putin and Zelensky nearly came to an agreement but cue Boris Johnson frantically working to ruin the agreement. So why should I or my son fight in a war, Boris Johnson should send his little Wilfred or Alfred or whatever his called and Carrie to defend what he or whoever is behind him that have actively worked so hard to start a war. Let them defend.

@spicedlemonpie if you think that spelling Britain "britten" is a grammar fail please install autocorrect or maybe just refer to the UK in future...

The nation can get stuffed. Doing their duty????

Aye right

1dayatatime · 25/01/2024 10:51

@Neverpostagain

"What other options would they have?"

+++

Simply to do nothing and let the likes of Putin put in place in the UK a puppet government (dictator) that is aligned to Russia' values and interests.

+++

@C152

"Unless Russia is stopped soon, there will be another world war. "

There would only be a war if the UK chose to fight. If the public opinion was against this and as we have seen on other posters that there was no appetite to fight then simply rolling over to whatever say Putin wanted then this would not result in a war and any loss of life or destruction.

Heisaknob · 25/01/2024 10:51

It’s a warning the UK cannot defend itself.

Nonimai · 25/01/2024 10:59

I think the main concern is that within the next 20 years Russia may attack NATO. More specifically the Baltic states. NATO must be prepared and we are very soft. As a late teen my friends and I were all in the TA. The money helped us through uni. It was fun at weekends. It all was forgotten about until the 2 medics in our group were called upon 20 years later for active service in Afghanistan. Then it sunk home that it was real training. As a teen there were 4 or 5 cadet corp units in our town . My kids had cadet corp at school. I see army training and preparedness for young people as a good thing, for both men and women.

Dotjones · 25/01/2024 10:59

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/01/2024 10:54

I wonder if they'd comply with orders from an occupying force and the choice is do as they're told or death.

I saw this headline today, along with the story that they're now banning "zombie" knives even if they don't have images or text glorifying violence. If we're going to have a chance of a "citizen army" being worthwhile we need to relax restrictions on weapons so that people can get used to using them.

More guns and knives on the street will lead to a spike in crime in the short term, it would then settle down as a "new normal" and citizens would be able to better protect themselves and better protect the country when the next war comes.

lola8345 · 25/01/2024 11:01

I can't even kill a spider! As a 50 year old women I hope they wouldn't call on. me. I can't cope with blood, so I'd be no use as a nurse.
I am an excellent gardener though and would happily grow food all day long.

I often walk through the graveyard and the soldiers graves are always the saddest, especially all the brothers lost with a year or so.

I have no idea what might happen, the world is falling apart.
