Aibu to think Chris Packham is just the most lovely human being , he's had laws enforced on killing birds for no reason , he's open about his Aspergers, he's a force for good in respect of all nature and I absolutely think he's fabulous. He's taken high court action against libel and won , he's just a lovely soul , a force for good in a world that cares very little for nature . I think he might be my hero . The dinner party guest is want to chat to .
I loved his earth series . It was exceptional.
And .....lastly
Animal experimentation is never going to work because they aren't human . I say this as a chronically ill person.

I love his passion in protecting animals from human harm while allowing them to be animals , predation , I love
Watching him on winter watch and spring watch and I genuinely think he deserves some recognition for his work .

He just seems to be an all round top
Bloke . Good on him .

Yeah just nip for cling film .

Or maybe cultivate with netting over ? As many do ? The birds were there first I'd wager before the landowners.

That's over 6 million hectares of netting, made of plastic, which birds will get caught up in. That would be an environmental hazard on an epic scale, not to mention the cost of it and the knock on impact that would then have on food prices.

capabilityfrowns · 22/01/2024 23:58

I'm clueless . But there have to be farming methods that don't hurt the wildlife ? No shooting birds ? No devastation by plastic ?

OP posts:
capabilityfrowns · 22/01/2024 23:59

Surely ? I've seen it .

Me too! Love the bones of him.

He's not my cup of tea & I'm on the side of the farmers. It baffles me how everyone isnt on their side TBH!

Crackwillow · 23/01/2024 00:26

I find him intensely irritating and more than a little arrogant.

capabilityfrowns · 22/01/2024 22:48

He is advocating the law . It is illegal to shoot birds .

So are we saying gamekeepers can just kill birds of prey with impunity because they don't like them eating their quarry that people pay to
Shoot and kill anyway ?

He lobbied for the law to be changed. Initially farmers could shoot them within reason under a general license, his lobbying got general licenses suspended and made it extremely hard for farmers

Really ?
You're in the side of people who kill birds and birds of prey because they snt suit them ? That farm land dd is of wildlife and make millions ?

I once sat next to a farmer at a weather spoons in deep negation for his land . He was offered millions for development. And he did the deal . Who gave him that land I wondered .....

I'm very glad .

They could cover their crops . They don't have to kill wildlife . Agricultural land is baron of wildlife.

Have you tried to cover hundreds of acres of crops?

Notamum12345577 · 23/01/2024 00:31

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 22/01/2024 22:53

Cover the crops? 🤦🏼‍♀️

100s of acres?

capabilityfrowns · 23/01/2024 00:32

Awww it's hard for farmers is it ? Poor loves .

I suspect it's harder for their farm hands on minimum wages .

I'm with you on this. Top bloke!

storminacupoftea · 23/01/2024 00:34

You seem remarkably ill-informed about animal testing of medicines. It’s totally reasonable to say you’re morally opposed to it, but it’s just plain wrong to say it will never work.

I take it you’d refuse insulin or cancer treatment or penicillin if you needed them??

capabilityfrowns · 23/01/2024 00:34

I'm still looking for someone to explain why it's ok for farmers to
Kill the wildlife? No one has as yet . Please explain

capabilityfrowns · 22/01/2024 22:57

Can you explain to me why it's ok to shoot birds please ?

Yes of course. Btw I don’t think it is ok to shoot birds just because someone wants to. But farmers should be able to when required, to protect the crops that we all need for food. It isn’t practical to cover them all. Most farmers are hanging by a thread as it is, if they lost most of their crops they would be finished. Then let’s see what we all think when bread prices for example shoot up because all the corn is having to be imported!

My darling lovely soul, would I be right in thinking you're not really very familiar with farming and the countryside?

Netting is a disaster for birds, they get caught up in it and suffer horribly. It's also a disaster for almost all other wildlife, from the insects who need to reach the crop to pollinate it to the deer, foxes, badgers and rabbits that there are an awful lot of on farms, I promise. It's also hell of a lot of plastic (that will break up) to throw around the countryside.

If it were an effective solution, it would already be being used. As it is on certain crops, like fruit bushes. With devastating impact on the local bird population.

This x10

The bread thing doesn't work for me

My ex is a baker . Making a bread cake for 2 p that sells for a pound - nah . No sense in that . Only profit .

Farmers are greedy .

For
Profit ???

That's not a reason . My line of work is criminal law . Can we shoot criminals to save money ? That would good .
